Conservation More Important Than Ever In Farm Bill, Roy Frederick Oct 2001

Conservation More Important Than Ever In Farm Bill, Roy Frederick

Cornhusker Economics

When a new farm bill is signed into law, conservation provisions are likely to vie with commodity supports for top billing. After more than twenty such laws, this may be a first. Soil conservation has been a part of farm bills since passage of the Soil Conservation and Domestic Allotment Act of 1936. However, not until passage of the Food Security Act of 1985 were wetlands, water quality, wildlife habitat and other natural resource issues addressed. Each subsequent farm bill has added one or more new conservation initiatives. The new legislation almost certainly will continue that pattern.

Distinct Retrieval And Retention Mechanisms Are Required For The Quality Control Of Endoplasmic Reticulum Protein Folding, Shilpa Vashist, Woong Kim, William J. Belden, Eric D. Spear, Charles Barlowe, Davis T.W. Ng

Dartmouth Scholarship

Proteins destined for the secretory pathway must first fold and assemble in the lumen of endoplasmic reticulum (ER). The pathway maintains a quality control mechanism to assure that aberrantly processed proteins are not delivered to their sites of function. As part of this mechanism, misfolded proteins are returned to the cytosol via the ER protein translocation pore where they are ubiquitinated and degraded by the 26S proteasome. Previously, little was known regarding the recognition and targeting of proteins before degradation. By tracking the fate of several mutant proteins subject to quality control, we demonstrate the existence of two distinct sorting …

Return To Fertility After Extended Chemical Castration With A Gnrh Antagonist, Janusz W. Kostanski, Ge Jiang, Bhas A. Dani, Santos B. Murty, Wei Qiu, Bruce Schrier, B. C. Thanoo, Patrick P. Deluca

Pharmaceutical Sciences Faculty Publications

BACKGROUND: Antagonistic analogues of GnRH for the treatment of prostate cancer may be used clinically in persons for whom return to fertility after such treatment is important or desirable. The purpose of this study was, therefore, to evaluate the effects of a long term treatment with orntide, a GnRH antagonist, on testosterone levels and fertility in male rats.

METHODS: Two groups of male rats received either 120-day orntide microspheres (8.8 mg orntide/kg/120 days) or vehicle alone (control group). Serum orntide and testosterone levels in both groups were monitored at certain intervals for 9 months from the initiation of treatment. After …
