Japan's Ise Shrine And Selected Norwegian Stave Churches: An Examination Of The Definition Of Vernacular Architecture., H. Gary Gillespie
Japan's Ise Shrine And Selected Norwegian Stave Churches: An Examination Of The Definition Of Vernacular Architecture., H. Gary Gillespie
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Japan’s Ise Shrine (300-600 C.E.) and Norway’s stave churches (1100-1250 C.E.) are examples of vernacular architecture. Analyses of their functions, building materials, construction techniques, structural forms, and the impact of local philosophical, mythological, and folk influences upon their forms and decorations show that the Ise Shrine and selected Norwegian stave churches reflect cultural values and idea systems common to both cultures. By definition, vernacular architecture implies a regional, provincial character wherein architectural style is perpetuated by native traditions as opposed to cross-cultural influences or universal expression. Yet, as this study demonstrates, all vernacular architecture is not so idiosyncratic and provincial, …
An Analysis Of A Reformulated Emission Control Diesel Effects On Heavy-Duty Vehicle Diesel Exhaust Emissions., Paidamoyo Andrea Nyika
An Analysis Of A Reformulated Emission Control Diesel Effects On Heavy-Duty Vehicle Diesel Exhaust Emissions., Paidamoyo Andrea Nyika
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Four fleets of heavy-duty diesel engine vehicles were emissions characterized using the West Virginia University (WVU) Transportable Heavy Duty Vehicle Emissions Testing Laboratory chassis dynamometer. Diesel exhaust emissions are comprised of a mixture of gases, liquid aerosols and substances made up of trace elements. They contain complex products of combustion including; carbon (soot), nitric oxide (NO), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), sulfur dioxide, carbon dioxide, aldehydes, hydrocarbons, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH), and water. With tougher laws and regulations being implemented by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to achieve cleaner air in the future, pressure has been mounting on vehicle users, factories, power …
A Non-Invasive Technique For Monitoring Miotic Eye Responses., Ahmed M. El-Sherbeeny
A Non-Invasive Technique For Monitoring Miotic Eye Responses., Ahmed M. El-Sherbeeny
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The eye is a very sensitive organ of the human body, and is subject to many hazards that may cause disorders such as miosis. Thus non-costly, non-invasive, safe methods for pupil assessment and monitoring are of the essence. Proposed is a simple eye scanning mechanism that periodically reports whether the pupil has experienced miosis or dilatation due to an external illumination source. The process uses a Clanguage program to control the image-grabbing process, as well as determining the pupil constriction/dilation conditions. The program focuses on dynamically isolating the pupil by producing a threshold for it that varies with the measured …
The Globalization Of Public Health: The First 100 Years Of International Health Diplomacy, David P. Fidler
The Globalization Of Public Health: The First 100 Years Of International Health Diplomacy, David P. Fidler
Articles by Maurer Faculty
Global threats to public health in the 19th century sparked the development of international health diplomacy. Many international regimes on public health issues were created between the mid-19th and mid-20th centuries. The present article analyses the global risks in this field and the international legal responses to them between 1851 and 1951, and explores the lessons from the first century of international health diplomacy of relevance to contemporary efforts to deal with the globalization of public health.

Scholars and philosophers spend much of their time discussing what pornography means and whether it can be defined. This debate persists despite the fact that most men, regardless of their sexual orientation, seem to understand quite well what pornography is, and what it is for: they produce it commercially, buy it in magazines, rent it in videos, and search for it on the Internet. The pornography industry has the distinct advantage of selling a product that, in legal terms, is considered "expression," and therefore a product that has been declared worthy of constitutional protection under section 2(b) of the Canadian …
Leadership, Episodes And Change In The Early Kanawha Valley, Stephen Annese Smoot
Leadership, Episodes And Change In The Early Kanawha Valley, Stephen Annese Smoot
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
The frontier period of the Kanawha Valley provides an interesting example of the sometimes dramatic change that occurred on the fringes of American civilization as it inched across the continent. Within twelve years of the creation of the county, it had developed from an embattled military buffer region into a quiet backwoods town. For the first six years, Indian attacks constantly assailed the settlements along the Kanawha River. Very likely, without the quality of leadership in the towns and military posts, the population would have retreated into safer regions of Virginia. Somehow men such as George Clendenin, founder of the …

Trauma, Criterion A, And Posttraumatic Stress Disorder: Scientific Utility And Definitional Validity., Kenneth Joseph Ruggiero
Trauma, Criterion A, And Posttraumatic Stress Disorder: Scientific Utility And Definitional Validity., Kenneth Joseph Ruggiero
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Research examining the relation between trauma and psychopathology has contributed to the identification of individuals who, following exposure to various potentially traumatic events (e.g., domestic violence, rape), may be at high risk for post-trauma difficulties (e.g., sleep disturbance, heightened displays of hypervigilant behavior). However, the validity of the definitional characteristics of trauma has not adequately been explored. For instance, few studies have targeted the extent to which reports of perceived life threat, injury, or peritraumatic responses of “horror,†“fear,†and “helplessness†are associated with various forms of trauma-relevant responding. Yet, reports of such subjective emotional responses and event characteristics are …
Effects Of A High Salt Diet On The Microcirculation In Normotensive Rats: The Role Of Reactive Oxygen Species., Deborah M. Lenda
Effects Of A High Salt Diet On The Microcirculation In Normotensive Rats: The Role Of Reactive Oxygen Species., Deborah M. Lenda
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
In normotensive rats fed high salt, arteriolar responsiveness to endothelium-dependent dilators is reduced due to suppression of local nitric oxide (NO) bioavailability. In the first study we evaluated the possibility that an increase in microvascular reactive oxygen species (ROS) may account for this decrease in NO activity. Arcade arterioles in the spinotrapezius muscle of Sprague-Dawley rats fed either a low (0.45%, LS) or high (7%, HS) salt diet for 4–5 weeks were examined. Arteriolar responses to acetylcholine (ACh) were significantly reduced in the HS rats but could be returned to normal in the presence of the ROS scavengers superoxide dismutase …

Creating And Supporting The Proxy-Decider: The Lawyer-Proxy Relationship, Nancy N. Dubler
Creating And Supporting The Proxy-Decider: The Lawyer-Proxy Relationship, Nancy N. Dubler
Georgia Law Review
Advance directives have been identified as the "quick fix" of bioethics. The logic goes something like this: If we could only get patients to tell us, in advance of disability, the specifics of the health care they would want to receive in the future, we could put our ethical and legal qualms aside and march ahead with care that we know is patient appropriate and legally protected. If we could only get the patient to commit, we could proceed with moral certainty and risk assurance. If we could only be given explicit instructions, we could act accordingly and be comfortable …
To Build, And Plant, And Keep A Table': Class, Gender, And The Ideology Of Improvement In Eighteenth-Century Women's Literature., Jeannie C. Dalporto
To Build, And Plant, And Keep A Table': Class, Gender, And The Ideology Of Improvement In Eighteenth-Century Women's Literature., Jeannie C. Dalporto
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
In this dissertation, I argue that the discourse of improvement, which stressed profit and productivity on the land and in the household, helped to define—and was defined by—class and gender ideology in the eighteenth century. I read the works of laboring class women poets, Mary Collier and Mary Leapor, and the utopian novelist, Sarah Scott, within the framework of land improvement treatises and household books. In doing so, I demonstrate how ideologies of labor and gender are inherently bound up with socioeconomic concerns about land and estate management. In Chapter one, I examine how notions of thrift found in land …

The Presbyterian Church Of East Africa: An Account Of Its Gospel Missionary Society Origins, 1895-1946., Evanson Ndungu Wamagatta
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This dissertation traces the Gospel Missionary Society origins of the Presbyterian Church of East Africa (PCEA). The church was established when the Gospel missionary Society (GMS) from the United States of America (USA) and the Church of Scotland Mission (CSM) from Scotland merged their work in 1946. Consequently, the focus of this study is the work of the GMS in Kenya from when it was inaugurated in 1895 to the time of the merger in 1946. As shown in this dissertation, the GMS initially had no intention of establishing its work and then hand it over to the CSM as …
Mechanisms Of Chromium(Vi)-Induced Carcinogenesis: The Involvement Of Reactive Oxygen Species And Signal Transduction Pathway., Suwei Wang
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Although Cr(VI)-containing compounds have been widely recognized as carcinogens for over 100 years, the mechanisms of their actions are not fully understood. The overall objective of this study is to investigate the role of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in Cr(VI)-induced carcinogenesis, focusing on tumor suppressor protein p53 and regulatory signal transduction pathways. In the present study, the role of ROS in p53 activation was investigated and the following conclusions were obtained: (a) Cr(VI) is able to activate p53 protein; (b) ROS, especially ·OH radical, are responsible for the p53 activation induced by Cr(VI). In addition, we presented a mechanism of …
The Role Of Accessory Proteins In Controlling The Thyroid Hormone Regulation Of Transcription Of The Malic Enzyme Gene., Yutong Wang
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Triiodothyronine (T3) stimulates a 70-fold or greater increase in transcription of the malic enzyme gene in chick embryo hepatocytes. Previous work has shown that the effects of T3 on malic enzyme transcription are mediated in large part by sequence elements located within a liver-specific and T3-inducible DNase I hypersensitive region in the 5′-flanking DNA of the malic enzyme gene. Within this DNase I hypersensitive region is a cluster of nuclear T3 receptor (TR) binding sites that together constitute a T3 response unit (TAU). Flanking the T3RU are accessory elements that enhance T3 regulation conferred by the T3RU in chick embryo …
An Investigation Of Teachers' Temperament And Students' Perceptions Of Teachers: Communication Behavior And Students' Attitudes Toward Teachers., Kristin Marie Valencic
An Investigation Of Teachers' Temperament And Students' Perceptions Of Teachers: Communication Behavior And Students' Attitudes Toward Teachers., Kristin Marie Valencic
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This study examined relationships among the way teachers communicate in the classroom, teachers temperaments, and perceptions of teachers by students. Specifically, the first goal was to determine to what extent a teacher's levels of extraversion, neuroticism, and psychoticism can predict students perceptions of task attraction, immediacy, assertiveness, responsiveness, and credibility. The second goal was to determine the relationships between teacher temperament and teacher evaluations, affective learning, and cognitive learning. Self-report surveys of 52 teachers and 1242 students across seven disciplines at West Virginia University were collected. Instructors received measures of extraversion, neuroticism, and psychoticism. Teachers were asked to rate themselves …
Transition From Moderate To Excessive Wheel Running In Rats: A Function Of Access Length?, Sara B. Lattanzio
Transition From Moderate To Excessive Wheel Running In Rats: A Function Of Access Length?, Sara B. Lattanzio
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
In rats, long daily wheel access produces an escalation to excessive levels of running while short daily access results in low stable levels of running. paralleling patterns of cocaine- taking (Lattanzio et al., 2000). Experiment I explored the effects of previous running experience (Phase l) on fixture running and feeding (Phase ll). Rats with 24 h daily access in Phase I escalated wheel running to a plateau of about 7000 wheel turns per day, while rats with 2 h daily access ran at low levels (about I000 wheel turns over the final 8 days of Phase l). The 2 h …
The Effect Of Delta9-Tetrahydrocannabinol (Thc) On The Establishment And The Expression Of Place Conditioning (Rattus Norvegicus), Robert Ernest Sorge
The Effect Of Delta9-Tetrahydrocannabinol (Thc) On The Establishment And The Expression Of Place Conditioning (Rattus Norvegicus), Robert Ernest Sorge
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
The place conditioning paradigm has been used to assess the antinausea potential of drugs in non-emetic animal species. The present experiments were designed to determine the potential of A9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) to alleviate both conditioned and unconditioned sickness in rats (Rattus norvegiens). The results in the present study suggest that when the place aversion is strong (Experiment 1), THC may interfere with the establishment; however when the aversion is weak (Experiments 2 and 3), THC may interfere with the expression. Also, when administered during acquisition of a strong amphetamine-induced place preference, THC also seems to interfere with the establishment of the …
Sensitization To Indirect And Direct Dopamine Agonists: Behavioural Differences In Wheel Running, Vanhthong Vilaysinh
Sensitization To Indirect And Direct Dopamine Agonists: Behavioural Differences In Wheel Running, Vanhthong Vilaysinh
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
Five experiments examined the effects of repeated exposure to stimulants, largely apomorphine (APO), on wheel running in male Sprague-Dawley rats. In these experiments, minor changes in procedure resulted in profound differences in the effects of APO on wheel running. Experiment 1 I compared changes in wheel running after repeated injections of 3.0 mg/kg amphetamine (AMP), 5.0 mg/kg of APO or vehicle (VEH). AMP resulted in a suppression in wheel running which become more pronounced over trials, while running in APO animals remained similar to the VEH group. Testing provided support for a conditioned suppression of wheel running rats previously treated …
