The first consideration prior to seeding is to determine the present level of management being applied to the proposed site. Many sites will recover or improve without seeding if proper management is implemented. Soil is the primary natural resource and its conservation is the most important consideration in seedings.

Learning What To Eat And What To Avoid, Usu Extension Jan 2001

Learning What To Eat And What To Avoid, Usu Extension

All Current Publications

Young herbivores learn which foods are harmful and which are safe through interactions with their mothers. Throughout life, they learn about the consequences of eating through postingestive feedback they experience after eating foods. But how can they do this in a world where toxin and nutrient levels of forages change daily and seasonally? How can they possibly learn and remember all the plants that grow in pastures and on rangelands? How can they survive when we move them to new pastures with unfamiliar foods?

Toxicant Impacts On Density-Limited Populations: A Critical Review Of Theory, Practice, And Results, Valery E. Forbes, Richard M. Sibly, Peter Calow Jan 2001

Toxicant Impacts On Density-Limited Populations: A Critical Review Of Theory, Practice, And Results, Valery E. Forbes, Richard M. Sibly, Peter Calow

Valery Forbes Publications

Most natural populations experience some density dependence, and longterm average rates of population growth are likely to be close to zero (i.e., steady state). An essential question, therefore, is how and to what extent do density-dependent effects influence the responses of populations to toxicant impacts? Here we consider three general types of interaction between density dependence and toxicant effects: additive, less than additive, and more than additive. If we know enough about the life-history dynamics of an organism and how its life-history traits are affected by density and toxicant exposure, we should be able to use life-history models to predict …

Group Viii Spiroplasma Of Costa Rica, Kimberly M. Stewart Jan 2001

Group Viii Spiroplasma Of Costa Rica, Kimberly M. Stewart

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations (1964–2006)

Spiroplasma bacteria isolates are classified or identified through a series of serological tests that normally consists of screening, one-way deformation tests, cloning, antisera production, and reciprocal deformation tests. Serological tests on the spiroplasmas are followed by molecular analysis. The standard molecular analysis used for spiroplasmas has been 16S rRNA sequencing. The primary goal ofmy research was to evaluate serologically Group VIII spiroplasmas isolated from tropical Costa Rican tabanids (Diptera: Tabanidae) and to compare them to the temperate North American Group VIII spiroplasmas. A secondary goal was to evaluate both the temperate and tropical Group VIII strains by sequencing the 16S-23S …

Animal, Dairy, and Veterinary Science Faculty Publications

Despite intense efforts to increase vaccine coverage, measles virus (MV) still causes significant morbidity and mortality in the world, sometimes as the result of severe, chronic, lethal disease. In an effort to develop therapies to supplement immunization strategies, a number of 5′-nor carbocyclic adenosine analogues were evaluated for anti-MV activity in CV-1 monkey kidney cells. Of those compounds tested, those either unsubstituted at C4 or possessing a hydroxyl, azido or amino substituent at that position were the most active, with particularly significant inhibition of MV, strain Chicago-1. The EC50 values against this strain ranged from100 mg/ml in actively growing and …

Imagineering The Community: The Vagrant Spaces Of The Malls, Enclave Estates, The Filmic And The Televisual, Dennis Wood Jan 2001

Imagineering The Community: The Vagrant Spaces Of The Malls, Enclave Estates, The Filmic And The Televisual, Dennis Wood

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

The idea of 'community' is an all pervasive and persuasive notion within society. But it is an elastic concept used by diverse groups and institutions to rally people to a cause or to reassure the public in times of (perceived) calamity. Of late the various forms of the media and certain elements of society have been focussing their attention on the 'breakdown of community' values citing the (perceived) rise in crime, the (supposed) fragmentation of the family and the (hypothetical) loss of respect for authority and authority figures as contributing to an ailing communal sensibility. However, as Anderson (1983) has …

From Ambivalence To Activism: Australia And The Negotiation Of The 1968 Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, Christopher Hubbard Jan 2001

From Ambivalence To Activism: Australia And The Negotiation Of The 1968 Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, Christopher Hubbard

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

This Dissertation presents a study of Australia's involvement in the negotiation and early interpretation of the 1968 Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), an instrument which remains the most important global nuclear arms control measure in international law. Using data from recently released Australian government documents, the study analyses the process by which Australia was transformed from an ambivalent nuclear sceptic within the Western alliance, into a steadfast global campaigner against the spread of nuclear weapons. It concludes that Australia's urgent search during 1967 and 1968 for coherence in its policy on nuclear weapons acquisition, largely played out within sections of the …

Remedies For Imperfect Transactions In Contracts And Torts, David W. Barnes Jan 2001

Remedies For Imperfect Transactions In Contracts And Torts, David W. Barnes

San Diego Law Review

The papers by Professors DeLong, Wonnell, and Kelly in this Symposium address different types of imperfect transactions. Promises that are the subject of section 90 of the Restatement (Second) of Contracts are imperfect in the sense that they lack consideration or are disclaimed in subsequent, formalized, written contracts.' Section 90 authorizes courts to find remedies for reasonable but fruitless expenditures induced by parties who make promises on which they should reasonably expect others to rely.2 Professor DeLong decries courts' formalist strategies for enforcing disclaimers that eliminate these promisors' potential liability for intentionally imperfect transactions.' Taking Professor DeLong's analysis of imperfect …

Taxing Income From Mailing List And Affinity Card Arrangements: A Proposal, Kevin M. Yamamoto Jan 2001

Taxing Income From Mailing List And Affinity Card Arrangements: A Proposal, Kevin M. Yamamoto

San Diego Law Review

The courts' and the Internal Revenue Code ("Code")2 presently treat

income received by a tax-exempt organization for affinity card programs' and mailing list rentals4 similarly; neither type of income is subject to taxation.5 This Article asserts that equal treatment should not be the case. Because donors have not consented to sell their personal information, the exception for royalty income from the unrelated business income tax ("UBIT") should not permit the tax-free rental of a nonprofit organization's mailing list. Affinity card income, on the other hand, should continue to be nontaxable since any income received from these programs comes from the …

United States V. Locke, 529 U.S. 89 (2000)

San Diego Law Review

The Ports and Waterways Safety Act (PWSA) authorizes, but does not require, the United States Coast Guard to enact prophylactic measures for regulating ocean vessel traffic, protecting waterway navigation, and protecting the marine environment. I The United States Supreme Court recently decided that individual states do not have the authority to enact oil tanker laws and regulations that are more restrictive than the federal

Limitations On The Consumer's Right To Know: Settling The Debate Over Labeling Of Genetically Modified Foods In The United States Jan 2001

Limitations On The Consumer's Right To Know: Settling The Debate Over Labeling Of Genetically Modified Foods In The United States

San Diego Law Review

Following this introduction, Part II of this Comment begins by providing some background to the scientific and regulatory nature of the GM food debate.26 Due to the dispute that is likely to center around the FDA's recent decision, Part El of this Comment addresses the precedent that supports the FDA's actions and demonstrates that the FDA has acted appropriately under the circumstances. Part IV adopts and applies a balancing approach designed to evaluate whether mandatory labeling initiatives are appropriate to protect the consumer's right to know. When weighing the rights of the food suppliers (i.e., those that would be burdened …

Honey Amylase And The Effect In Starch-Containing Foods, Sibel Babacan Jan 2001

Honey Amylase And The Effect In Starch-Containing Foods, Sibel Babacan

Open Access Dissertations

Honey amylase was evaluated for potential to degrade food starch and cause viscosity loss. Honey was assayed for amylase activity with diastase number (DN). A viscosity assay, developed with unmodified waxy maize starch, measured rate of viscosity decrease (RVD) by honey amylase. The relationship between DN and RVD was linear (R2 = 0.98). Modified waxy maize starches showed resistance to honey amylase. Heat treatment at 85 °C reduced the amylase activity in honey, but confirmed enzyme heat resistance. Optimum pH for honey amylase was confirmed at pH 5.3-5.6. Lower pH was effective at decreasing enzyme activity in both pure starch …

Street Theater, Angel Yvonne Green Jan 2001

Street Theater, Angel Yvonne Green

Open Access Dissertations

Close examination of the Short-story reveals a fragment of life rendered through lightning impressions, which are compressions, and which exhibit a skill of omission. Particularly, in the writings of women, omissions challenge writing codes. Writing codes dictate conventional expectations of narrative, of gender, of race. Writing codes would marginalize the unconventional, and by so doing, maintain the status quo. Like penal sentences these codes impose a role-identity not only on the characters and the narrative-proper, but also on the author. Self recovery from writing codes requires a subversive escape from a location of no choice in topic. Street Theater is …

Traces Of Enlightenment: Eighteenth-Century Travel Writing And The Reproduction Of Knowledge(S), Richard Kenneth Van Dyke Jan 2001

Traces Of Enlightenment: Eighteenth-Century Travel Writing And The Reproduction Of Knowledge(S), Richard Kenneth Van Dyke

Open Access Dissertations

Through analysis of eighteenth-century travel writing and eighteenth-century attempts to discover a reliable metaphysical knowledge, this study reveals foundational instability in the European Enlightenment knowledge project and thus makes a call for a more nuanced approach to eighteenth-century textuality than late twentieth-century discourse theorists usually allow. Discourse theorists often construct an enlightenment defined exclusively by progressive endpoints of social order, narrative control, and epistemological fixity, which lead to practices of domination over self-determined Others. Yet, through a focus on the metaphysical inquiries of George Berkeley and David Hume, a different picture of the eighteenth-century knowledge project emerges. For Berkeley and …

Study Of Particle Deposition In Human Airway Models, Guosen Yue Jan 2001

Study Of Particle Deposition In Human Airway Models, Guosen Yue

Open Access Dissertations

In this dissertation, the deposition of particles in human airway models is studied. The dissertation consists of three parts: In the first part, an analytical model of particle nasal airway deposition by diffusion considering effects of both laminar and turbulent flows is proposed. It appears in the literature that neither laminar nor turbulent analytical models alone works well for the entire range of diffusion parameters. A simplified turbulent particle diffusion equation is first developed and then a new combined turbulent/laminar diffusion model is proposed. The results predicted from the new model show improved accuracy when compared with available experimental data …

Using Jpeg2000 Compressed Images For Foveated Texture Mapping In Limited Memory Environments, Timothy Michael Henry Jan 2001

Using Jpeg2000 Compressed Images For Foveated Texture Mapping In Limited Memory Environments, Timothy Michael Henry

Open Access Dissertations

Despite advances in hardware technology and software rendering algorithms, there remain several limitations that force design trade-offs in virtual environments and visualization systems, such as the decision between increased level of detail, scene rendering time and the storage size of an object or virtual world. If an application involves the Internet or another restricted bandwidth transmission environment, the amount of data necessary to communicate a high level of detail becomes an even more critical parameter. Texture mapping and light mapping are used to increase the realism of a scene without increasing the geometric complexity. The cost for these methods is …

In Search Of The Qualitative Clear Majority: Democratic Experimentalism And The Quebec Secession Reference, Cristie Ford Jan 2001

In Search Of The Qualitative Clear Majority: Democratic Experimentalism And The Quebec Secession Reference, Cristie Ford

All Faculty Publications

This article attempts to marry direct democratic deliberation with the enforcement of important constitutional norms in the context of a real-life policy question. The question is the secession of Quebec from Canada. The article argues that a referendum is neither the most legitimate nor the most effective way to address the issue. The debate over Quebec's future must be reoriented by reference to the broad normative framework set out by the Supreme Court of Canada in the Reference Re Secession of Quebec, [1998] 2 S.C.R. 217, combined with a new democratic process. This article introduces an innovative constitutional model called …

Cadmium Toxicity And Random Motility Studies Using Marine Dinoflagellates, Edwin Li Jan 2001

Cadmium Toxicity And Random Motility Studies Using Marine Dinoflagellates, Edwin Li

Open Access Dissertations

The marine biota is exposed to heavy metal residues of industrial and agricultural processes. The effects of these metals on phytoplankton are of particular interest because they represent the first link in the food chain and are able to transfer the metal to higher trophic levels. Members of the phytoplankton population include the diverse community of flagellated unicellular, mostly photosynthetic, microorganisms called dinoflagellates. The effects of cadmium (Cd) on the growth of two marine dinoflagellates Scrippsiella narragansettensis and Heterocapsa triquetra were measured under different medium composition. To investigate the role of metal speciation, experiments were carried out in media prepared …

The remaining stories were written during various fiction workshops. The stories and novella all deal with individuals coming to the precipice of a major experience in their lives. My work deals with the psychological or worldly concerns these characters must ponder in deciding whether to withdraw, act, or leap from their precipice. Some themes I explore in this work as a whole include addictions, homelessness, death, and physical, mental, …

A Break-Even Analysis Of Trout Processing In West Virginia: A Case Study Approach., Ryan M. Fincham Jan 2001

A Break-Even Analysis Of Trout Processing In West Virginia: A Case Study Approach., Ryan M. Fincham

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The objective of this study was to determine the current status of trout processing in West Virginia and to determine break-even quantities of whole pounds of trout required for the two main processors in the state. Simulation models were developed for each firm specific to the characteristics of the plant. Scenarios were developed according to historical demand for products and product profit margins determined by the model. Results show that the smaller of the plants experiences regional prices, which are higher than what the industry acquires. If the prices decrease, the plant will have to make changes in processing techniques …

Mechanotransduction In Bone: Passive And Load-Induced Fluid Transport In Rat Femora., Bixia Li Jan 2001

Mechanotransduction In Bone: Passive And Load-Induced Fluid Transport In Rat Femora., Bixia Li

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The capacity of bone tissue to alter its mass and structure in response to mechanical demands has long been recognized but the mechanisms involved remained poorly understood. Load-induced interstitial fluid flow has been postulated to provide a mechanism for transduction of the mechanical signals to the cellular level to activate bone adaptation. This research is to investigate experimentally the effects of mechanical loading on fluid flow in bone by introducing stain/tracer. Rat femurs were used to test the passive diffusion and mechanical transport properties of the stain in bone. It was found that fluorescein is compatible with an animal model …
