Cytokine Expression In Patients With B-Cell Chronic Lymphocytic Leukaemia, Anna Kaminski Jan 2001

Cytokine Expression In Patients With B-Cell Chronic Lymphocytic Leukaemia, Anna Kaminski

Other Faculty of Health Theses

B-cell chronic lymphocytic leukaemia (B-CLL) results from a clonal accumulation of CD5+ve B-lymphocytes. This expansion of B-lymphocytes is due to increased proliferation and extended survival secondary to decreased apoptosis. Both proliferation and apoptosis are regulated by a group of soluble proteins, termed cytokines, which are secreted by cells and play a key role in the regulation of immunological responses. In view of this, the role of cytokines in the pathogenesis of B-CLL was studied. Interleukin 4 (IL-4) is an anti-apoptotic cytokine which up-regulates bcl-2 in malignant B-lymphocytes. Peripheral blood samples, from untreated B-CLL patients were investigated, together with a group …

The Relationship Between Livestock Distribution Channels And Animal Welfare, Karen Christina Murray Jan 2001

The Relationship Between Livestock Distribution Channels And Animal Welfare, Karen Christina Murray

Other Faculty of Science and Engineering Theses

Major changes are taking place in all sectors of the livestock and meat producing industries from farm to consumer which impinge on the processes and patterns of livestock distribution from farm to slaughter. These changes are identified and described. A survey of the complete journeys from farm to abattoir of 18,393 slaughterweight lambs sold direct from farm to abattoir, via livestock auction markets and via electronic auctions was conducted. Lambs sold direct from farm to abattoir experienced shorter journeys (in terms of both median duration and distance) than lambs sold through either of the other two channels. Lambs sold through …

Developments And Benefits Of Liquid Feeding Through Fermentation For The Post-Weaned Pig, Colm Anthony Moran Jan 2001

Developments And Benefits Of Liquid Feeding Through Fermentation For The Post-Weaned Pig, Colm Anthony Moran

Other Faculty of Science and Engineering Theses

A programme of study was undertaken to assess the safety and palatability of fermented liquid feed. A series of laboratory experiments was conducted to select an inoculant capable of fermenting liquid feed at 20°C. Whilst combinations of cultures dropped the pH the most rapidly, the Lb. plantarum (PC) strain decreased the pH the lowest. A series of trials were conducted using a rifampicin mutant of Lb. plantarum (PC) to examine the fate of the starter culture. In an experiment using liquid milled wheat the addition of the starter culture resulted in an improvement in the inhibition of coliforms over the …

The Importance Of Being : The Autobiographical Subject In The Drama And Memoirs Of Ronald Duncan, Anna Claire Trussler Jan 2001

The Importance Of Being : The Autobiographical Subject In The Drama And Memoirs Of Ronald Duncan, Anna Claire Trussler

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

This study developed after considerable time spent collating and cataloguing data contained in Ronald Duncan's archive. Familiarisation with the material led to my identifying a need to explore the elusive nature of the personality that biographical material should hope to uncover. Duncan was prone to mainly confessional writing, a kind of writing that demands a causal inference between life and work. Furthermore, the archive supplies multiple data sources that serve to aid chronology, trace reliability, provide external corroboration and investigate truth-value. My study follows a loosely chronological structure after discerning shifts in his thematic concerns. The years up until the …

Poetic Anatomy Of The Numinous Creative Passages Into The Self As Beloved, Partou Zia Jan 2001

Poetic Anatomy Of The Numinous Creative Passages Into The Self As Beloved, Partou Zia

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

This research is shaped by the actual experience of practice: as painter and writer. My preoccupation is with the nodal moment when conscious awareness is suspended, and both the corporal and psychic involvement in realising the work almost transport one to another zone of effectiveness. This zone, which I name as the poetic zone, is where the numinous enters the ordinary. The investigation for a space/place/moment that lies beyond the logic of acceptable discourse can help initiate and give shape to a new vocabulary - visual or literary. By orchestrating a methodology, which functions on several layers, I have endeavoured …

An Investigation Into The Factors Determining Ruminant Livestock Distribution In The Far South West, Dafydd Huw Davies

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

Major changes are taking place in all sectors of the livestock and meat producing industries from farm to consumer which impinge on the processes and pattems of livestock distribution from farm to slaughter. These changes are identified and described. A farm business survey of lowland beef and sheep finishers was undertaken, prior to the 2001 Foot and Mouth outbreak, to gain a better understanding of farm business behaviour in order to model the farm business strategies in relation to aggregate livestock channel utilisation. Statistically robust and predictive models using a number of derived latent strategic variables, distilling marketing and business …

Studies In Agricultural Technology In Nineteenth- And Twentieth-Century England, Paul William Brassley Jan 2001

Studies In Agricultural Technology In Nineteenth- And Twentieth-Century England, Paul William Brassley

Other Faculty of Science and Engineering Theses

Four published papers and several parts of a book are presented herein, together with a previously unpublished short paper explaining the intellectual background against which they were written and summarising their findings on the development of agricultural teQmology in England in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. This outlines the contribution of economic and sociological the^pries to the study of technical change, but makes the point that historical studies, although clearly influenced by these theories, tend to use a multifactorial approach which avoids privileging any single explanation. Nevertheless, several themes arising in all of this material are identified, especially the gap …

Chapter 2 …

Antitrust And Intellectual Property: Unresolved Issues At The Heart Of The New Economy, Robert Pitofsky Jan 2001

Antitrust And Intellectual Property: Unresolved Issues At The Heart Of The New Economy, Robert Pitofsky

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

The New Economy differs in degree rather than kind from the "old" economy. Part II of this discussion examines the key differences that define the New Economy. Part Ill turns to several implications of those differences as they pertain to antitrust enforcement. I argue that the differences do not justify sweeping generalizations that antitrust enforcement has no place in the New Economy, but do require antitrust enforcement to make adjustments and exercise sensitivity towards intellectual property issues on a case-by-case basis. The goal of a coherent overall competition policy, in deciding both what conduct to enforce against and what remedies …

Biomarkers Relevant To Oil And Gas Industrial Activities In Low Temperature Marine Ecosystems, Lionel Andre Yves Camus Jan 2001

Biomarkers Relevant To Oil And Gas Industrial Activities In Low Temperature Marine Ecosystems, Lionel Andre Yves Camus

School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses

Because of its geographical location, the Arctic environment is considered as pristine. However, expanding industrial activities in the Arctic require assessment of the toxicity of chemicals at low temperature. Biomarkers defined as "biological responses to a chemical or chemicals that give a measure of exposure or toxic effect" were shown to be relevant to measure in situ impact of oil discharges. Most biomarker studies have been performed with temperate organisms. The Arctic is characterised by low stable temperature, strong seasonality in light, resulting in a short primary production in Spring. Therefore, indigenous organisms have developed specific adaptations to live with …

My professors at the University of Northern Iowa encouraged me to …

Examining The Need For Improved Health Education For Underserved Populations In Selected Eastern Caribbean Basin Nations, Linda K. George Miller Jan 2001

Examining The Need For Improved Health Education For Underserved Populations In Selected Eastern Caribbean Basin Nations, Linda K. George Miller

Graduate Research Papers

The Eastern Caribbean Basin (ECB) is comprised of several diverse islands that share many common characteristics. As tourism has increased in most of the islands, chronic disease patterns have also increased. The governments of these island nations are well aware of the need for increased health education efforts, but adequate personnel are not always available locally.

Complications from chronic disease are escalating in the aging population. Efforts to expand health education efforts among the islands would assist in reducing these complications and early deaths.

Diseases often seen on the ECB islands include hypertension, cardiovascular and heart disease, diabetes, cancer, and …

An Enzymatic Method For The Measurement Of Magnesium, Joseph Murphy Jan 2001

An Enzymatic Method For The Measurement Of Magnesium, Joseph Murphy

Theses

Magnesium is quantitatively the most important intracellular divalent cation (4), and has been found to serve in a wide range of enzymatic reactions (2). Studies have shown that up to ten percent of hospital patients may have hypomagnesaemia (6).

Atomic absorption spectrophotometry (AAS) under highly specified conditions is the de facto reference method for magnesium measurement but only about ten per cent of laboratories routinely use this method (4). This is because AAS is time-consuming, requires specialised equipment and a certain level of expertise, and may be hazardous due to the use of inflammable gases. Colourimetric methods e.g. calmagite are …

Identification Of A Defensin From The Hemolymph Of The American Dog Tick, Dermacentor Variabilis, Robert Johns, Daniel E. Sonenshine, Wayne L. Hynes Jan 2001

Identification Of A Defensin From The Hemolymph Of The American Dog Tick, Dermacentor Variabilis, Robert Johns, Daniel E. Sonenshine, Wayne L. Hynes

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Hemolymph from partially fed virgin Dermacentor variabilis females was collected following Borrelia burgdorferi challenge and assayed for antimicrobial activity against Bacillus subtilis and B. burgdorferi. A small inducible cationic peptide was identified by SDS-PAGE in the hemolymph of these ticks as early as 1h post challenge. Following purification by a three-step procedure involving sequential SepPak elution, reversed phase high performance liquid chromatography (RP-HPLC) and gel electrophoresis, the yield of the active peptide was approximately 0.1% of the total protein in the hemolymph plasma. The molecular weight, 4.2kDa, was determined by MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry. N-terminal sequencing by the Edman degradation …

Infection And Transovarial Transmission Of Rickettsiae In Dermacentor Variabilis Acquired By Artificial Feeding, K. R. Macaluso, Daniel E. Sonenshine, Shane M. Ceraul, A. F. Azad

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

In this study we examined the efficiency of an in vitro feeding technique using glass microcapillaries as a method of establishing rickettsiae-infected lines of ticks. To quantify the volume ingested by ticks during microcapillary feeding, the incorporation of radiolabeled amino acids in tick gut and hemolymph was calculated. Fifteen of 18 ticks consumed between 0.06 μl and 6.77μl. However, ingestion of fluid was not correlated to weight gain during capillary feeding. Uninfected and partially fed laboratory-reared female Dermacentor variabilis ticks were exposed to either Rickettsia montana- or Rickettsia rhipicephali-infected Vero cells via microcapillary tubes, returned to rabbit hosts, …

Aerobic Respiratory Costs Of Swimming In The Negatively Buoyant Brief Squid Lolliguncula Brevis, Ian K. Bartol, Roger Mann, Mark R. Patterson Jan 2001

Aerobic Respiratory Costs Of Swimming In The Negatively Buoyant Brief Squid Lolliguncula Brevis, Ian K. Bartol, Roger Mann, Mark R. Patterson

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Because of the inherent inefficiency of jet propulsion, squid are considered to be at a competitive disadvantage compared with fishes, which generally depend on forms of undulatory/oscillatory locomotion. Some squid, such as the brief squid Lolliguncula brevis, swim at low speeds in shallow-water complex environments, relying heavily on fin activity. Consequently, their swimming costs may be lower than those of the faster, more pelagic squid studied previously and competitive with those of ecologically relevant fishes. To examine aerobic respiratory swimming Costs, O2 consumption rates were measured for L. brevis of various sizes (2-9 cm. dorsal mantle length, DML) …

Comparative Development, Longevity And Population Growth Of Exotic And Native Parasitoids Of Lepidopteran Cereal Stemborers In Kenya, J. C. Mbapila, W. A. Overholt Jan 2001

Comparative Development, Longevity And Population Growth Of Exotic And Native Parasitoids Of Lepidopteran Cereal Stemborers In Kenya, J. C. Mbapila, W. A. Overholt

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

Studies on the effect of temperature on the development, longevity and population growth of Cotesia flavipes Cameron and Cotesia sesamiae (Cameron) indicated that the development of both Cotesia spp. from oviposition to cocoon formation and adult emergence was inversely related to temperature. The longevity of the parasitoids was also inversely related to temperature. Both parasitoids lived longer when moisture and food (agar + honey/water) were provided. The mean number of females and total adult progeny produced by C. flavipes on two host species were, in most cases, higher than C. sesamiae. The intrinsic rate of natural increase of C. flavipes …

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

Studies were conducted in two districts of eastern Uganda from 1997 to 1999 to introduce and monitor the establishment of an exotic parasitoid, Cotesia flavipes Cameron (Hymenoptera: Braconidae), for the control of the stemborer Chilo partellns (Swinhoe) (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae), and also to determine the stemborer species complex in maize and sorghum. The study confirmed the presence of four important stemborers, two pyralids Ch. parlellus and Eldana saccharina Walker and two noctuids, Busseola fusca Fuller and Sesamia calamistis Hampson. Chilo partellus was dominant, constituting 53-88% of stemborers found followed by B.fiisca at 8-37 %. The most abundant local parasitoid was the …

Desired Absence: A Woman's Perspective, Heather Dominick Jan 2001

Desired Absence: A Woman's Perspective, Heather Dominick

Theses

Humans are born either male or female depending on their sexual organs. While there are specific biological functions connected to those organs, it is society that assigns distinct, opposite behavioral standards, mores, and roles for each gender. These are portrayed as outgrowths of biological differences and considered normal. However, gender roles are socially constructed not biologically determined. My thesis work Desired Absence: A Woman's Perspective explores the themes of gender and violence using photography and video. The body of work includes two components; a series of seven silver gelatin mural sized photographs of the human face, and a single channel …

The Pineal Gland, Via Melatonin, Protects Dna, Coordinates The Endocrine System With The Immune System And Controls The Timing Of Reproduction, Craig L. Anthony Jan 2001

The Pineal Gland, Via Melatonin, Protects Dna, Coordinates The Endocrine System With The Immune System And Controls The Timing Of Reproduction, Craig L. Anthony

Theses and Dissertations

The pineal gland secretes the hormone melatonin (n-acetyl-5-methoxytryptamine) with a circadian rhythm. This secretion's rhythm becomes disrupted with age. When melatonin secretion is decreased with advanced age, the immune, endocrine and reproductive systems fail to function optimally. Melatonin possesses lipophilic and anti-oxidant properties, providing it with access to nuclei. Melatonin protects the DNA, preventing cancerous mutation. Hippocampal degeneration and age increase and prolong the adrenocortical responses to stress. Melatonin supplementation reduces the prolonged exposure to harmful hormones.

Titrating And Evaluating Multiple Drug Regimens Within Subjects, Margaret Shih Jan 2001

Titrating And Evaluating Multiple Drug Regimens Within Subjects, Margaret Shih

Theses and Dissertations

The dosing of combination therapies is commonly undertaken empirically by practicing physicians, and there is a lack of a coherent algorithm to approach the problem of combination dosing. Current methods of evaluating multiple drug combinations in clinical trials generally do not provide information regarding the location of more effective dosages when the combination is not found to differ from the standard, even though the absence of a difference does not necessarily mean the new combination is ineffective. Additionally, if a new combination is found to be more effective, often a large proportion of the subjects has not benefited from the …
