Juvenile Sex Offenders In Western Australia: Offence History, Treatment And Recidivism, Alfred Allan, Maria M. Allan, Katalin Kraszlan Jan 2001

Juvenile Sex Offenders In Western Australia: Offence History, Treatment And Recidivism, Alfred Allan, Maria M. Allan, Katalin Kraszlan

Research outputs pre 2011

The aim of this research project was to provide a general description of different groups of juvenile sex offenders in Western Australia (WA), and to describe their offence histories and re-offending. It also aimed to compare the juvenile sex offenders with all juvenile offenders in WA. The last aim was to identify variables, which could discriminate between juveniles who are convicted of later sex offences, and those who are not. The sample consisted of 334 juvenile sex offenders convicted in the WA Children’s Court (Court) from January 1990 until the end of June 1998. To achieve this, the research team …

Your Place, My Place, Interface, Lelia Green (Ed.)

Research outputs pre 2011

This publication is the output of 2001 School of Communications and Multimedia post-graduate cohort. For many of us this is the first time our own work will be seen beyond the assignment or the essay destined for the tutor. For students from the interactive multimedia and film and video streams communicating in the written word without the assistance of pictures and electrical gadgetry can be a frightening experience. Further, most us of had little experience in creating or simulating an academic journal with all that it entails. Still, with assistance of our publications unit coordinator Lelia Green we soldiered on. …

Meiofaunal Colonization Of Artificial Substrates., Nazan Atilla Jan 2001

Meiofaunal Colonization Of Artificial Substrates., Nazan Atilla

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Meiofaunal colonization of artificial substrates was investigated in a shallow estuarine embayment. Meiofauna colonized various artificial substrates rapidly, at a rate of 1000 individuals collector-1 day -1 regardless of season, suggesting that high abundances of meiofauna commonly exist in the water column. These water-column meiofauna may be important in fish diets and may serve as a dispersing pool that aids recolonization after disturbance events. Colonization of artificial substrates by transient meiofauna of unknown origin(s) occurred through the water column. To determine the source of meiofauna colonizing artificial substrates, sediment and pier-piling meiofauna were sampled and compared to artificial-substrate colonists. Assemblages …

A Drifter Study Of Advection, Deformations, And Patch Variances With Application To Larval Transport And Dispersal In Barataria Bay, Louisiana., Terry L. Schaefer Jan 2001

A Drifter Study Of Advection, Deformations, And Patch Variances With Application To Larval Transport And Dispersal In Barataria Bay, Louisiana., Terry L. Schaefer

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Field studies were conducted to characterize flow fields and their effect on larval transport and retention within Barataria Bay, Louisiana. Drifter tracking and passive larval sampling was conducted monthly during the spring and summer months from 1994 through 1996. Fifteen drifter tracking sessions were conducted over full tidal cycles (diurnal). Drifter positions were determined approximately every thirty minutes using a GPS receiver. A spline interpolation was used to estimate drifter positions at synchronous five-minute intervals. An analytical methodology of Okubo and coworkers was used to compute deformations; and changes in patch variances from the drifter positions. Mean tidal advection and …

Good Faith And The Cooperative Antagonist (Symposium On Revised Article 1 And Proposed Revised Article 2 Of The Uniform Commercial Code), James J. White Jan 2001

Good Faith And The Cooperative Antagonist (Symposium On Revised Article 1 And Proposed Revised Article 2 Of The Uniform Commercial Code), James J. White

Articles

One of Karl Llewellyn's most noted achievements in the Uniform Commercial Code was to impose the duty of good faith on every obligation under the Uniform Commercial Code.1 Some (I am one) have privately thought that imposition of this unmeasurable, undefinable duty was Llewellyn's cruelest trick, but no court, nor any academic writer, has ever been so bold or so gauche as to suggest that good faith should not attend the obligations of parties under the UCC. Notwithstanding this silent indorsement of the duty of good faith, the courts2 and commentators3 have had difficulty in determining what is and what …

Bio-Prospecting For Phytochemical Repellents/Adulticides Of Anopheles Gambiae, Maurice Ochilo Omolo

All Master’s Theses

Mosquitoes are vectors of vast economic and medical importance. They transmit life threatening human and animal diseases such as malaria, viral encephalitis, dengue fever, filariasis, and dog heart worms. Currently, malaria causes more than 500 million cases of acute illness and > 1 million deaths annually, with 90% of the deaths occurring in Africa. This disease is responsible for 25% of the deaths in children. It leads to miscarriage, low birth weight, and deaths among pregnant women. The malaria parasites and vectors have developed resistance to the available commercial antimalarial drugs and insecticides as well as insect repellents respectively. There is …

Responsible Regulation: A Sensible Cost-Benefit, Risk Versus Risk Approach To Federal Health And Safety Regulation, Steve Calandrillo Jan 2001

Responsible Regulation: A Sensible Cost-Benefit, Risk Versus Risk Approach To Federal Health And Safety Regulation, Steve Calandrillo

Articles

Federal health and safety regulations have saved or improved the lives of thousands of Americans, but protecting our citizens from risk entails significant costs. In a world of limited resources, we must spend our regulatory dollars responsibly in order to do the most we can with the money we have. Given the infeasibility of creating a risk-free society, this paper argues that a sensible cost-benefit, risk versus risk approach be taken in the design of U.S. regulatory oversight policy. The goal should always be to further the best interests of the nation, rather than to satisfy the narrow agenda of …

Forward To Fundamental Alteration: Addressing Ada Title Ii Integration Lawsuits After Olmstead V. L. C, Steve Calandrillo, Jefferson D.E. Smith

Articles

In 1999, the Supreme Court reviewed the case of Olmstead v. L.C. by Zimring, which has been called the Brown v. Board of Education for the law of disability discrimination. The Court ultimately agreed with the Department of Justice ("DOJ") and held that the Americans with Disabilities Act ("ADA"), along with its supplementary Integration Regulation, requires a State that offers treatment to persons with disabilities to provide such treatment in a community setting where such a placement would not be an unreasonable change or a fundamental alteration in the State's program. Advocates of community care have long argued that such …

Shifting The Paradigm In E-Commerce: Move Over Inherently Distinctive Trademarks, The E-Brand, I-Brand And Generic Domain Names Ascending To Power?, Xuan-Thao Nguyen

Articles

“What's in a name!” laments Juliet at her Shakespearean balcony. Four hundred years later, in the world of e-commerce, Juliet's question would be “What's in a domain name?” After spending all of the Montague's wealth, Romeo might be able to respond, “Call me but love.com.” The price tag for some generic domain names cost a small fortune: Sex.com for $250 million, Business.com for $7.5 million, Broadband.com for $6 million, Loans.com for $3 million, Flu.com for $1.4 million, and Bingo.com for $1.1 million.

In 1995, Procter and Gamble registered hundreds of generic domain names and offered them for sale at auction …

Should It Be A Free For All? The Challenge Of Extending Trade Dress Protection To The Look And Feel Of Web Sites, Xuan-Thao Nguyen

Articles

In the e-commerce world, a company's web site becomes the primary communication center with the customer. The web site is where the company displays products, presents marketing materials, and provides sales and post-sales support. Increasingly, companies are spending valuable resources to build and maintain their web sites. With the rapid change in web technology, many web sites now feature more than just ordinary text. Color, clipart, graphics, designs, animations, and sounds are now part of the overall appearance of web sites. Yet copying an image from a web site is just one click away. What protection is available to the …
