Hydrologic Events And Water Quality In The Pigeon River, Ottawa County, Michigan, Neil W. Macdonald, Richard R. Rediske, Jonathan E. Van Denend

Peer Reviewed Publications

The Pigeon River drains a 16,765-ha agricultural watershed in western Ottawa County, Michigan and discharges into south-central Lake Michigan. Extensive areas of wetlands in the upper watershed were drained in the 1920s, causing significantly altered hydrology characteristics by flashy discharges during storms and periods of snowmelt. We studied stream chemistry and hydrology for a four-year period between September, 1996, and October, 2000, to determine water quality status, to estimate annual nutrient exports, and to evaluate the effects of different seasonal flow types. Results of our study confirmed that the upper reaches of the Pigeon River experience chronically degraded water quality, …

Fairness, Efficiency And Insider Trading: Deconstructing The Coin Of The Realm In The Information Age, Kimberly D. Krawiec Jan 2001

Fairness, Efficiency And Insider Trading: Deconstructing The Coin Of The Realm In The Information Age, Kimberly D. Krawiec

Faculty Scholarship

Whether and how the federal securities laws should restrict insider trading is one of the most hotly debated topics in the securities law literature. Paradoxically, both the theoretical analysis and the legal rules concerning insider trading remain extraordinarily vague and ill-formed. What is the special character of insider trading that leads to this apparently irresolvable puzzle? In this Article, I argue that there is, in fact, nothing special about insider trading that creates this dilemma, but rather there is something special about the nature of information itself. Accordingly, this theoretical dilemma is not limited to insider trading regulation, but rather …

Increased Severity Of Hsv-1 Keratitis And Mortality In Mice Lacking The 2–5a-Dependent Rnase L Gene, Xiaodong Zheng, Robert H. Silverman, Aimin Zhou, Tomoko Goto, Byoung Se Kwon, Herbert E. Kaufman, James M. Hill

Chemistry Faculty Publications

Purpose: The2′,5′-oligoadenylate-dependent RNase L gene functions in the interferon-inducible RNA decay pathway known as the 2–5A system. The purpose of this study was to determine whether the absence of this gene affects the pathogenesis of herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) ocular infection in the mouse. Methods: HSV-1 (strain McKrae) was applied bilaterally to unscarified corneas of RNase L–null mice and congenic controls. To evaluate the severity of herpetic keratitis, slit lamp examinations (SLE) were performed every other day for 14 days. To study corneal histology and apoptosis, HSV-1–inoculated RNase-L-null and congenic control mice, as well as mock-inoculated mice (apoptosis …

Periodontal Response To Two Intracanal Medicaments In Replanted Monkey Incisors, Y.L. Thong, H.H. Messer, C.H. Siar, L.H. Saw

Research Publications (2000 to 2005)

Intracanal medicaments are recommended for use in replanted teeth to inhibit inflammatory root resorption. This study compared the effect of calcium hydroxide (Pulpdent (R)) and a corticosteroid-antibiotic paste (Ledermix (R)) on periodontal healing and root resorption following replantation. Incisors of eight Macaca fascicularis monkeys were extracted, stored dry for 15 min and replanted. After I I days, root canals in two adjacent maxillary incisors were treated with one medicament and contralateral incisors with the other medicament, or left as untreated controls. Animals were sacrificed 8 weeks later and the teeth prepared for histomorphometric evaluation of periodontal ligament inflammation and root …

Abiotic Vs. Biotic Influences On Habitat Selection Of Coexisting Species: Climate Change Impacts?, Thomas E. Martin Jan 2001

Abiotic Vs. Biotic Influences On Habitat Selection Of Coexisting Species: Climate Change Impacts?, Thomas E. Martin

Wildlife Biology Faculty Publications

Species are commonly segregated along gradients of microclimate and vegetation. I explore the question of whether segregation is the result of microhabitat partitioning (biotic effects) or choice of differing microclimates (abiotic effects). I explored this question for four ground-nesting bird species that an segregated along a microclimate and vegetation gradient in Arizona. Birds shifted position of their nests on the microhabitat and microclimate gradient in response to changing precipitation over nine years. Similarly, annual bird abundance varied with precipitation across 12 yr. Those shifts in abundance and nesting microhabitat with changing precipitation demonstrate the importance of abiotic influences on bird …

Behavioral Interactions Between Coexisting Species: Song Playback Experiments With Wood Warblers, P. R. Martin, Thomas E. Martin Jan 2001

Behavioral Interactions Between Coexisting Species: Song Playback Experiments With Wood Warblers, P. R. Martin, Thomas E. Martin

Wildlife Biology Faculty Publications

Behavioral interactions between coexisting species may reflect underlying ecological interactions or may arise from factors unrelated to ecological interactions between species. We examined behavioral interactions between two coexisting, migratory wood warblers that competitively interact on breeding territories in central Arizona, USA. The larger Orange-crowned Warbler (Vermivora celata) is aggressive toward the later-arriving Virginia's Warbler (V. virginiae) and responds to playback of Virginia's Warbler songs by approaching the playback speaker or by singing over Virginia's Warbler songs. Virginia's Warblers retreat from interactions with Orange-crowned Warblers and avoid the playback speaker when presented with Orange-crowned Warbler songs. Responses of both species to …

Development Of Amperometric Enzyme Electrodes For Glucose And Hypoxanthine., Eilish Broderick Jan 2001

Development Of Amperometric Enzyme Electrodes For Glucose And Hypoxanthine., Eilish Broderick

Theses

This thesis is concerned with the immobilisation of enzymes on electrosynthesised poly (o- phenylenediamine) membranes for use on amperometric electrodes. The thesis opens with a discussion of the basic principles of enzymology and a review of a diverse range of biosensors, followed by a consideration of amperometry as governed by the Cottrell equation.

Glucose oxidase and horseradish peroxidase were co-immobilised in poly (o-phenylenediamine) on platinum electrodes at + 0.6 V versus Ag/AgCl. Using this approach the enzymes are entrapped in a strongly adherent, highly reproducible thin membrane, of thickness approximately 10 nm. This one-step procedure produces a glucose sensor with …

Trust, Trustworthiness, And The Behavioral Foundations Of Corporate Law, Margaret M. Blair, Lynn A. Stout Jan 2001

Trust, Trustworthiness, And The Behavioral Foundations Of Corporate Law, Margaret M. Blair, Lynn A. Stout

Cornell Law Faculty Publications

Conventional legal and economic analysis assumes that opportunistic behavior is discouraged and that cooperation is encouraged within firms primarily through the use of legal and market incentives. This presumption is embedded in the modern view that the corporation is best described as a "nexus of contracts, " a collection of explicit and implicit agreements voluntarily negotiated among the rationally selfish parties who join in the corporate enterprise. In this Article we take a different approach. We start from the observation that, in many circumstances, legal and market sanctions provide, at best, imperfect means of regulating behavior within the firm. We …

Twenty-Five Years Of Population Fluctuations Of Microtus Ochrogaster And M-Pennsylvanicus In Three Habitats In East-Central Illinois, Lowell L. Getz, Joyce E. Hofmann, Betty Mcguire, Thomas W. Dolan Iii

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Populations of 2 species of arvicoline rodents, the prairie vole (Microtus ochrogaster) and meadow vole (M. pennsylvanicus), were monitored monthly in alfalfa, bluegrass, and tallgrass prairie habitats in east-central Illinois from 1972 through 1997. Alfalfa provides very highquality preferred food and poor vegetative cover for both vole species, whereas bluegrass provides intermediate food and vegetative cover. Preferred food resources were very low, especially for M. ochrogaster, and vegetative cover was very dense in tallgrass prairie. Maximum and mean population densities of M. ochrogaster were highest in alfalfa, intermediate in bluegrass, and lowest in tallgrass prairie. …
