G1425 Garlic Production In The Home Garden, Laurie Hodges, Susan D. Schoneweis
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
Garlic provides flavor to many favorite recipes, is relatively easy to grow and offers plenty of varieties from which to choose. Garlic, Allium sativum L., is used as a seasoning in many foods worldwide. It isn't considered a major vegetable because consumption is generally small due to its strong flavor. But without garlic, many of our popular dishes would lack the flavor and character that make them favorites. Fortunately, garlic is relatively easy to grow in the home garden. The most difficult decision may be deciding what kind of garlic to plant since there are over 100 cultivars available from …
Rearing And Releasing Galerucella Beetles To Control Purple Loosestrife, Stevan Z. Kenzevic, Doug Smith
Rearing And Releasing Galerucella Beetles To Control Purple Loosestrife, Stevan Z. Kenzevic, Doug Smith
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
Purple loosestrife is a noxious weed quickly invading Nebraska's wetlands. This publication describes the rearing and releasing of insects for biological control of the weed, as one part of an integrated management program. Purple loosestrife is a noxious perennial weed invading thousands of acres of wetlands and waterways in the Midwest. In Nebraska an estimated 18,000 acres are already infested by this plant, mostly along the main rivers and waterways. It has no natural enemies in North America, therefore it is very hard to prevent it from spreading. For years people have tried to eradicate it, especially in the Great …

Leasing And Valuing Swine Facilities, Bruce B. Johnson, Allen Prosch, Ron Christensen
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
This NebGuide provides an overview of factors to consider when setting rent levels or placing appropriate market value on swine facilities when a purchase is being considered or negotiated.
Assigning appropriate rents and values to farm buildings has always been challenging because of the diversity of building inventories, as well as the selective demand for these structures. For swine facilities, the challenge has even grown as buildings have become increasingly specialized in efforts to improve animal performance.
When evaluating a swine facility for leasing or valuation, several things must be considered, such as environmental and zoning compliance, location, site, condition …
G1428 Valuing Farmland Conservation Easements, Bruce B. Johnson, Steven B. Mitchell
G1428 Valuing Farmland Conservation Easements, Bruce B. Johnson, Steven B. Mitchell
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
This NebGuide discusses farmland conservation easements and the process of estimating their value.
The United States continues to lose thousands of acres of productive and scenic farmland every year to urban and other nonagricultural uses. In response to this trend, conservation easements have evolved as one of several land protection tools. Conservation easements allow the continued use of land for agricultural purposes, while allowing the landowner to still receive some of the benefits of his/her development rights.
Several of the benefits from conservation easements come in the form of reduced taxes. In order to receive the desired tax benefits, the …
Nf01-455 Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy In The United States, David R. Smith
Nf01-455 Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy In The United States, David R. Smith
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
The USDA announced on December 23, 2003 the first diagnosis in the United States of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE or mad cow disease) in a dairy cow. BSE is not contagious. It is unlikely that an outbreak of BSE will occur in North American cattle because the United States and Canada took action in 1997 to prevent transmission via contaminated feed. The risk to human health from BSE is minuscule. However, the diagnosis may seriously affect beef exports from the U.S.

Nf01-483 Attending Fairs: Safeguarding Your Health And Nebraska's Livestock Industry, Rosie Nold, David R. Smith
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
The recent media attention on outbreaks of foot-and-mouth disease in the United Kingdom and other livestock-related diseases is a reminder of the serious consequences of livestock diseases. Most diseases, including foot-and-mouth, cannot be transmitted from animals to humans, although a few diseases can affect both humans and animals. For your own health, it is important to use some simple sanitary practices when visiting places where livestock are housed or are being exhibited. Another concern is the spread of disease among animals. Even though many diseases do not present any direct risks to humans, human contact can help spread diseases to …

A small java program can be embedded in an HTML page. Applets differ from full-fledged java applications in that they are not allowed to access certain resources on the local computer, such as files and serial devices (modems, printers, etc.), and are prohibited from communicating with most other computers across a network. The current rule is that an applet can only make an Internet connection to the computer from which the applet was sent.

The Kindness Of Strangers: Interdisciplinary Foundations Of A Duty To Act, Nancy Levit
The Kindness Of Strangers: Interdisciplinary Foundations Of A Duty To Act, Nancy Levit
Faculty Works
In American tort law, one has historically been allowed to do nothing and not be held liable for injuries to others resulting from that inactivity. Viewed perhaps more charitably, tort law does not punish citizens for minding their own business. People generally have no affirmative duties to aid or protect others -- you can watch blind people walk into traffic and not be sued for failing to stop them. It's not nice, but it's not tortious. This essay examines the no duty to act rule in torts and the policy reasons typically offered in support of its enduring presence. It …
The Concept Of Election And Second Isaiah: Recent Literature, Joel Kaminsky
The Concept Of Election And Second Isaiah: Recent Literature, Joel Kaminsky
Religion: Faculty Publications
In this article I contend that the conceptual categories utilized by many recent scholars engaged in analyzing the idea of election in the Hebrew Bible have led to a variety of interrelated misunderstandings, both of the idea of election in general and of specific texts invoked in such discussions. This article traces out the distortions in the scholarship on this central theological concept and shows how similarly problematic trends also occur in discussions of Second Isaiah, a text frequently cited in studies of election. I conclude by offering a brief sketch of both a new possible reading of Second Isaiah …
Submerged And Solid-State Phytase Fermentation By Aspergillus Niger: Effects Of Agitation And Medium Viscosity On Phytase Production, Fungal Morphology And Inoculum Performance, Maria Papagianni, Sue E. Nokes, Keith Filer
Submerged And Solid-State Phytase Fermentation By Aspergillus Niger: Effects Of Agitation And Medium Viscosity On Phytase Production, Fungal Morphology And Inoculum Performance, Maria Papagianni, Sue E. Nokes, Keith Filer
Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering Faculty Publications
Qualitative relationships between agitation levels and medium viscosity, Aspergillus niger morphology and phytase production were investigated in submerged and solid-state fermentations. Overall phytase production increased with increasing shaker speeds from 150 to 300 rpm, although specific growth rates and phytase production rates were higher at 150 rpm for 72 h from inoculation. Fungal morphology was greatly influenced by agitation with the morphological forms of small pellets and entangled mycelia predominating at 150 rpm, while the free filamentous form was obtained at 300 rpm. Upon inoculation of SSF, increased productivities were obtained from inocula grown at 150 rpm. A shift towards …

Recent Observations Of The Distribution And Status Of Bluntnose Darters And Crystal Darters In Iowa, Melvin C. Bowler
Recent Observations Of The Distribution And Status Of Bluntnose Darters And Crystal Darters In Iowa, Melvin C. Bowler
Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS
The distribution and status of Iowa's fishes were last extensively described in Iowa Fish and Fishing (Harlan et al. 1987). Since then, numerous fish collections have been made in Iowa's interior and bordering rivers and streams. Excluding non-native species, there have been three documented accounts of new fish species distributional records in Iowa since 1987. In this paper, I describe new collections of crystal darter (Crystallaria asprella) and bluntnose darter (Etheostoma chlorosomum) from the Mississippi River. The first documented specimen of C. asprella in Iowa was collected in Pool 11 of the Upper Mississippi River (UMR) in 1995. One specimen …

Identification And Distribution Of The Treefrogs Hyla Versicolor And Hyla Chrysoscelis In Iowa, Catherine E. C. Oberfoell, James L. Christiansen
Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS
Historically, the tetraploid and diploid species pair of gray treefrogs, Hyla versicolor and Hyla chrysoscelis, were mapped collectively in Iowa because no macroscopic morphological characteristics useful in recognizing the two species had been found. The present study reports identification and separation of the species by counts of nucleoli in the palpebral membrane of the eye and by measurement of scanning electron micrographs of toepad epithelial projections. Subsequent morphometric data confirm that the two species are morphologically distinct in Iowa but that overlap in characters continues to make macroscopic morphology unreliable for identifying individuals. H. chrysoscelis is distributed sporadically though all …

Systematics And Relationships Of Fallugia (Rosoideae—Rosaceae), James Henrickson
Aliso: A Journal of Systematic and Floristic Botany
The paper presents a systematic monograph of Fallugia (Rosoideae, Rosaceae) consisting of one variable species, Fallugia paradoxa. Morphological, cytological and molecular data clearly support its relationship with Geums.l. rather than Purshia-Cowani, with which it is often allied. The species was named twice independently in 1825 from the specimens and drawings, respectively, assembled by Sessé and Mociño for their proposed Flora Mexicana. The paper discusses the nomenclatural history, morphological variation, and the polygarno-dioecious mode of reproduction of the species. No infraspecific taxa are recognized.

Neuro-Brucellosis In Children, Mohammed S. Bessisso, Mahmoud F. Elsaid, Sittina S. E. Elshazli, Hatim M. Abdelrahman, Mariam G. Alali, Ali R. Ali, Hamad M. Aljaber
Neurosciences
Brucellosis is an infection caused by gram negative cocobacilli (Brucellae). Presentation is usually non-specific and diagnosis depends on high index of suspicion. Nervous system involvement in children is rare as only 47 cases were reported until 1998. We are reporting two patients with neurobrucellosis. The first case was an 8-year-old boy who presented with papillodeoma, and neck stiffness of one month duration. Cerebrospinal fluid pressure was 360mm/water, protein 0.63gm/dl, and cerebrospinal fluid sugar/serum sugar 0.2/4.7mmol. Brucella titer was high in serum and cerebrospinal fluid. The second case was a 3-year-old girl with congenital hydrocephalus, with history of fever, loss of …
Effects Of Epilimnetic Versus Metalimnetic Fertilization On The Phytoplankton And Periphyton Of A Mountain Lake With A Deep Chlorophyll Maxima, Wayne A. Wurtsbaugh, H. P. Gross, Phaedra E. Budy, Chris Luecke
Watershed Sciences Faculty Publications
Nutrients can load directly to either the epilimnion or metalimnion of lakes via either differential inflow depths of tributaries or intentional fertilization of discrete strata. We evaluated the differential effects of epilimnetic versus metalimnetic nutrient loading using 17-m-deep mesocosms that extended into the deep chlorophyll layer of oligotrophic Pettit Lake in the Sawtooth Mountains of Idaho. Addition of nitrogen plus phosphorus stimulated primary production nearly identically (2.4- to 4-fold on different dates) in both treatments, with the production peaks occurring in the strata where nutrients were added. The metalimnetic fertilization, however, resulted in equal or greater stimulation of chlorophyll a …
Yellow Lupins For The Pig Industry, Bruce P. Mullan
Yellow Lupins For The Pig Industry, Bruce P. Mullan
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
There is no doubt that Yellow lupins are suitable as an ingredient in the diet of pigs from weaning through until slaughter. While no research has been conducted on feeding this variety to breeding stock, there is no reason to believe that it would not be a suitable source of energy and amino acids. Whether it will become a significant ingredient in pig diets will depend on its availability and price.
Investigating Teeth Eruption And Eating Quality, Sarah Weisse, Rob Davidson, Brian Mcintyre, David Pethick, John Thompson
Investigating Teeth Eruption And Eating Quality, Sarah Weisse, Rob Davidson, Brian Mcintyre, David Pethick, John Thompson
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
In Australia, a sheep ceases to be a lamb as soon as the eruption of its first permanent incisor teeth is evident. As part of a wider program to investigate a number of aspects of sheep meat eating quality, a project was undertaken to determine whether lamb eating quality would be compromised if sheep with partially erupted teeth continued to be classified as lamb.
Overall, the results indicated that meat from young sheep with partially erupted teeth was unlikely to be inferior in eating quality than the meat currently classified as lamb.
Re-Thinking The Summer Drenching Program, Brown Besier
Re-Thinking The Summer Drenching Program, Brown Besier
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
The summer drenching program has provided highly effective sheep worm control in Western Australia for many years - but recent research challenges its long term sustainability.
Trial results suggest that in large parts of the State, summer drenching is the main factor leading to the development of drench resistant worms. Alternative programs less likely to lead to drench resistance will require greater monitoring of worm burdens and panning pasture moves.
Ecological Sustainability For Pastoral Management, Hugh Pringle, Ken Tinley
Ecological Sustainability For Pastoral Management, Hugh Pringle, Ken Tinley
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
Pastoralists and rangeland bureaucracies are now required to operate within the limits of ecological sustainability. However, while the concept of ecological sustainability has been enshrined in law and policy at State and Commonwealth levels in Australia, there has been little translation into pastoral management objectives. The introduction of the 'EMU (Ecosystem Management Unit) process', as an equal partnership between ecologists and pastoralists, promises to bring pastoralists into close dialogue with the landscapes they manage on their stations, and to acknowledge and manage for values other than pasture production. In doing so, pastoralists are likely to increase production, reduce costs, and …
