The Fort Clark Archeology Project, 2000-2001 Historical Archeological Investigations., William J. Hunt Jr.

Department of Anthropology: Faculty Publications

Historical archeological work during the summers of 2000 and 2001 has been directed toward development and installation of a series of interpretive panels relating to the history, archeology, and peoples living at Fort Clark. In anticipation of this, investigations in 2000 included small scale testing and large scale geophysical surveys at the village and both trading posts. Fieldwork in 2001 was more focused and utilized geophysical survey data from both years to guide a multi-university field school excavation at Fort Clark. Excavation goals were to clarify the structural history and evolution of the post, discern functional change in one portion …

Managing N Inputs And The Effect On N Losses Following Excretion In Open-Dirt Feedlots In Nebraska, Galen Erickson, Terry Klopfenstein Jan 2001

Managing N Inputs And The Effect On N Losses Following Excretion In Open-Dirt Feedlots In Nebraska, Galen Erickson, Terry Klopfenstein

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

Feedlot nutrition will play an important role in meeting environmental challenges of beef cattle feedlots. Nutritionists are continually refining protein requirements and recently adopted a new, metabolizable protein (MP) system to more efficiently use N and allow more accurate diet formulation. Protein requirements vary by animal age and weight during the finishing period. Our hypothesis was that formulating diets with the MP system would decrease N inputs leading to decreased excretion and losses. Comparing industry average diets (13.5% CP) to phase-fed diets formulated to not exceed MP requirements decreased N inputs by 10 to 20% for calves and yearlings without …

Estimating Forage Protein Degradation In The Rumen, Terry J. Klopfenstein, R. A. Mass, K. W. Creighton, H. H. Patterson Jan 2001

Estimating Forage Protein Degradation In The Rumen, Terry J. Klopfenstein, R. A. Mass, K. W. Creighton, H. H. Patterson

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

Forage proteins are degraded rapidly by rumen microorganisms and therefore supply relatively small quantities of undegraded intake protein (UIP). Growing cattle with high metabolizable protein requirements and lactating beef and dairy cows respond to UIP supplementation when fed high-forage diets, even though degradable intake protein (DIP) is adequate. This observation suggests that an accurate estimate of forage UIP is needed to establish optimal supplementation conditions. Microbial protein must be quantitated in duodenal or in situ residue samples to accurately measure forage UIP. Purines commonly are used as a microbial protein marker. Recent reports suggested that the original purine procedure generates …

Origin And Conservation Genetics Of Threatened Ute Ladies’-Tresses, Spiranthes Diluvialis (Orchidaceae), Allen L. Szalanski, Gerry Steinauer, Richard Bischof, Jessica Lynn Petersen

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

The Ute ladies’-tresses, Spiranthes diluvialis, is listed as a threatened orchid in west-central United States by the Federal government. Information on its origin and patterns of genetic variation is needed to develop effective conservation strategies for this species. DNA sequencing and polymerase chain reaction–restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) was used to evaluate genetic variation and structure of 23 populations of S. diluvialis. In addition, four congeneric species were analyzed to determine possible origins of the putative allotetraploid S. diluvialis. DNA sequencing and PCR-RFLP analysis of the nuclear ribosomal internal transcribed spacer (ITS) and mitochondrial and chloroplast DNA …

Utilization Of Bt Corn Hybrids In Growing Beef Steers, Jeffrey Folmer, Galen E. Erickson, D. J. Jordan, Todd Milton, Terry J. Klopfenstein Jan 2001

Utilization Of Bt Corn Hybrids In Growing Beef Steers, Jeffrey Folmer, Galen E. Erickson, D. J. Jordan, Todd Milton, Terry J. Klopfenstein

Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports

Two trials were completed to evaluate the efficacy of Bt corn hybrids for growing steers. After grain harvest, trial 1 used two fields of N7333 Bt and nonBt corn to evaluate grazing performance and preference of growing steers. Trial 2 compared early and late maturing varieties (N4242 and N7333, respectively) of Bt and nonBt corn hybrids in corn silage-based growing diets. No differences in performance or grazing preference were observed between N7333 Bt or nonBt residue. Steers fed corn silage from hybrids N4242 gained 11% faster (P>.01) and were 7% more efficient (P>.01) than those fed N7333 hybrids. …

Summer Grazing And Fall Grazing Pressure Effects On Protein Content And Digestibility Of Fall Range Diets, Trey Patterson, Terry J. Klopfenstein, Don C. Adams, Walter H. Schacht, Patrick E. Reece, Jacqueline A. Musgrave, Amy Herron Jan 2001

Summer Grazing And Fall Grazing Pressure Effects On Protein Content And Digestibility Of Fall Range Diets, Trey Patterson, Terry J. Klopfenstein, Don C. Adams, Walter H. Schacht, Patrick E. Reece, Jacqueline A. Musgrave, Amy Herron

Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports

In 1997 and in 1998, four blocks of Sandhills range were used to examine summer grazing time and fall grazing pressure effects on fall diet quality. Three pastures within each block were grazed in June, July, or deferred from summer grazing each year. Multiple grazing pressures were created by grazing cows at various stocking rates in the fall. Diets were collected by esophageally fistulated cows. In 1997, diet protein and digestibility declined with increasing grazing pressure. In 1998, there were no effects of grazing pressure on fall diet protein or digestibility. July grazing reduced fall diet protein compared to June …

Use Of Sire Referencing Schemes To Select For Improved Carcass Composition In Sheep, G. Simm, R. M. Lewis, J. E. Collins, G. J. Nieuwhof Jan 2001

Use Of Sire Referencing Schemes To Select For Improved Carcass Composition In Sheep, G. Simm, R. M. Lewis, J. E. Collins, G. J. Nieuwhof

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

Objective genetic improvement in specialized meat breeds of sheep in Britain is based largely on the performance recording and genetic evaluation service provided by Signet and the Meat and Livestock Commission. This includes the use of ultrasonic scanning and a selection index to identify animals with high genetic merit for lean growth. More than 20 sire referencing schemes (SRS) have been established in Britain during the last 12 yr. About half of the performance- recorded flocks in Britain now belong to SRS. Sire referencing schemes create genetic links between flocks and years through the shared use of elite rams (reference …

The Evolution Of Virtual Ecology, Alan Kamil, Alan B. Bond Jan 2001

The Evolution Of Virtual Ecology, Alan Kamil, Alan B. Bond

Alan Bond Publications

The relationship between the perceptual and cognitive abilities of predatory birds and the appearance of their insect prey has long been of intense interest to evolutionary biologists. One classic example is crypsis, the correspondence between the appearance of prey species and of the substrates on which they rest which has long been considered a prime illustration of effects of natural selection, in this case operating against individuals that were more readily detected by predators (Poulton 1890; Wallace 1891). But the influences of predator psychology are broader, more complex, and more subtle than just pattern matching. Many cryptic prey, including the …

Candidate Gene Analysis For Loci Affecting Litter Size And Ovulation Rate In Swine, R. C. Linville, Daniel Pomp, R. K. Johnson, M. F. Rothschild

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

A candidate gene approach was used to determine whether specific loci explain responses in ovulation rate (OR) and number of fully formed (FF), live (NBA), stillborn, and mummified pigs at birth observed in two lines selected for ovulation rate and litter size compared with a randomly selected control line. Line IOL was selected for an index of OR and embryonic survival for eight generations, followed by eight generations of two-stage selection for OR and litter size. Line C was selected at random for 16 generations. Line COL, derived from line C at Generation 8, underwent eight generations of two-stage selection. …

Sensory Biology Of Whip Spiders (Arachnida, Amblypygi), Ranier Foelix, Eileen Hebets Jan 2001

Sensory Biology Of Whip Spiders (Arachnida, Amblypygi), Ranier Foelix, Eileen Hebets

Eileen Hebets Publications

Whip spiders belong to a small arachnid order (Amblypygi) that is not well known. Their most conspicuous feature are the elongated, extremely thin front legs (“whips”, or antenniform legs). These are no longer used for walking but are modified extremities carrying various sense organs – very much like the antennae of insects. Whereas hundreds of olfactory hairs are concentrated near the tip of each antenniform leg, large bristles (contact chemo-receptors) are evenly distributed over the entire antenniform leg. The sensory hairs of each antenniform leg contribute about 30,000 small sensory axons which proceed toward the Central Nervous System (CNS). The …

Genetic Consequences Of Polygyny And Social Structure In An Indian Fruit Bat, Cynopterus Sphinx. Ii. Variance In Male Mating Success And Effective Population Size, Jay F. Storz, Hari Bhat, Thomas H. Kunz Jan 2001

Genetic Consequences Of Polygyny And Social Structure In An Indian Fruit Bat, Cynopterus Sphinx. Ii. Variance In Male Mating Success And Effective Population Size, Jay F. Storz, Hari Bhat, Thomas H. Kunz

Jay F. Storz Publications

Variance in reproductive success is a primary determinant of genetically effective population size (Ne), and thus has important implications for the role of genetic drift in the evolutionary dynamics of animal taxa characterized by polygynous mating systems. Here we report the results of a study designed to test the hypothesis that polygynous mating results in significantly reduced Ne in an age-structured population. This hypothesis was tested in a natural population of a harem-forming fruit bat, Cynopterus sphinx (Chiroptera: Pteropodidae), in western India. The influence of the mating system on the ratio of variance Ne to adult …

Pockets Of Stones, Thomas Lynch Jan 2001

Pockets Of Stones, Thomas Lynch

Department of English: Faculty Publications

We stand beneath a hard blue bowl, carved and polished turquoise to a flawless sheen. Well no, it's just the sky, because when I turn around, there's the bright autumn sun.

This warm October day the boys and I take the trail towards Dripping Springs, then swing north on the Crawford trail, past the ruins of the Modoc mine and mill. Beyond the mill site, the trail turns east, straight at the sheer walled mountains, passes into a boulder-choked defile and then stops abruptly at a smooth and curved cliff face--damp with a delicate trickle of water. It's a box …

G1420 Direct Sales Of Beef, Paul Swanson Jan 2001

G1420 Direct Sales Of Beef, Paul Swanson

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

This NebGuide offers producers suggestions for selling beef directly to consumers.

Successful direct selling of beef to consumers requires a different mind-set from our traditional sale of commodity beef to processors, wholesalers and retailers. The much closer relationship of the beef producer to the actual consumer creates many opportunities to provide more income from each individual animal and for the consumer to receive a product which is generally not available in the store. A growing number of consumers are interested in purchasing beef that is produced locally, on small farms or ranches, humanely raised, without implants, without the feeding of …
