Effects Of Un-Ionized Ammonia On Hydropsyche Morosa Hagen Larava Net And Retreat Construction, Althea Caraway, N. H. Troelstrup Jr.

Oak Lake Field Station Research Publications

The objectives of this study were to (1) describe natural variability in retreat and net mesh dimensions and retreat and net tending behavior for the hydropsychid caddisfly Hydropsyche morosa Hagen and (2) perform laboratory experiments to determine the influence of un-ionized ammonia on H. morosa retreat and net construction. H. morosa were collected from fifteen streams in eastern South Dakota and head capsules, nets, and retreats were photographed and measured. Caddis were exposed to 0.00, 0.025, 0.05 and 0.1 mg/L un-ionized ammonia for 48 and 96 hours within experimental stream chambers. Data indicate that exposing caddis to un-ionized ammonia caused …

Some Assyriellaspecies In South East Anatolia In Turkey Differentiated By Multivariate Statistical Analysis (Gastropoda: Pulmonata, Helicidae), Hasan Akbayin, Murat Hevedanli, Ridvan Şeşen

Turkish Journal of Zoology

This study was performed on 3 species of the genus Assyriella ( A. escheriana , A. guttata and A. thospitis) collected from Diyarbakır province in Southeast Anatolia. Two derived and 6 shell variables of 50 specimens were examined for each species. Hierarchical clustering and discriminant analysis were used to evaluate the data in order to clarify and contribute to some systematic problems of these species. It was shown that Ward's method with Euclidean distance is the most appropriate hierarchical clustering method to cluster these species. A. escheriana is clearly differentiated from A. guttata and A. thospitis by both Ward's method …

Marsh Frogs, Rana Ridibunda In Lake Akören -26 August National Park (Afyon): A Preliminary Study Of Population Size And A Taxonomical Evaluation, Uğur Kaya, Uğur C. Eri̇şmi̇ş

Turkish Journal of Zoology

The population size of marsh frogs, Rana ridibunda was estimated using the mark-recapture method in Lake Akören Lake. The triple catch method was used to calculate survival and gains in addition to population size. The population sizes were estimated to be 3016 on the second day, and 3532 on the third day. On the basis of morphological analyses, we concluded that Lake Akören is inhabited by Rana ridibunda ridibunda.

Turkish Journal of Zoology

The presence of 8 carnivores representing 3 families (Canidae, Felidae and Hyaenidae) in the northeastern Badia was con-firmed by trapping and spotlighting. The family Canidae is represented by 4 species: Canis aureus syriaca, Canis lupus arabs, Vulpes vulpes and Vulpes rueppelli. Three felines, Caracal caracal schmitzi, Felis margarita and Felis sylvestris tristrami, were spotlighted. Remains of recently killed Hyaena hyaena syriacawere recovered. Major threats affecting the population of desert carnivores such as poisoning and shooting are discussed in detail. Current local, IUCN and CITES statues of the carnivores of the Badia area are given.

As a result of examinations, 15 species are determined in the region. Among these, Mangelia paciniana (Calcara, 1839), Raphitoma echinata (Brocchi, 1814) and Philbertia horrida Monterosato, 1884 are Mediterranean endemic species, and are new records for the Turkish coasts. Other species listed in this study are distributed both in the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean.

A Preliminary Study On The Ladybirds (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) Of Edirne In North-Western Turkey, Selçuk Yurtsever Jan 2001

A Preliminary Study On The Ladybirds (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) Of Edirne In North-Western Turkey, Selçuk Yurtsever

Turkish Journal of Zoology

Preliminary investigations were carried out to determine the ladybird species of Turkish Trakya. Population samples for the study were obtained from several sites in different habitats near Edirne province. A total of twelve different ladybird species were determined. Of these, the 7-spot ladybird, Coccinella septempunctata, was the commonest species. The density of the 22-spot ladybird, Psyllobora vigintiduopunctata, was higher than that of the other ladybirds in almost all habitats surveyed. Frequencies of the black and yellow forms of the 14-spot ladybird, Propylea quatuordecimpunctata, in the area showed a tendency to be associated with open and shaded habitats respectively. Moreover, the …

Factors Influencing Spatial Variability Of Soil Apparent Electrical Conductivity, D. E. Clay, J. Chang, D. D. Malo, C. G. Carlson, C. Reese, S. A. Clay, M. Ellsbury, B. Berg

Agronomy, Horticulture and Plant Science Faculty Publications

Soil apparent electrical conductivity (ECa) can be used as a precision farming diagnostic tool more efficiently if the factors influencing ECa spatial variability are understood. The objective of this study was to ascertain the causes of ECa spatial variability in soils developed in an environment with between 50 and 65 cm of annual rainfall. Soils at the research sites were formed on calcareous glacial till parent materials deposited approximately 10,000 years ago. Soil samples (0–15 cm) collected from at least a 60 by 60 m grid in four fields were analyzed for Olsen phosphorus (P) and …

Changes In Thermotolerance And Hsp70 Expression With Domestication In Drosophila Melanogaster, Robert A. Krebs, S. P. Roberts, B. R. Bettencourt, M. E. Feder Jan 2001

Changes In Thermotolerance And Hsp70 Expression With Domestication In Drosophila Melanogaster, Robert A. Krebs, S. P. Roberts, B. R. Bettencourt, M. E. Feder

Biological, Geological, and Environmental Faculty Publications

To examine how the duration of laboratory domestication may affect Drosophila stocks used in studies of thermotolerance, we measured expression of the inducible heat-shock protein Hsp70 and survival after heat shock in D. melanogaster strains recently collected from nature and maintained in laboratory culture for up to 50 or more generations. After an initial increase in both Hsp70 expression and thermotolerance immediately after transfer to laboratory medium, both traits remained fairly constant over time and variation among strains persisted through laboratory domestication. Furthermore, variation in heat tolerance and Hsp70 expression did not correlate with the length of time populations evolved …
