Cytokinesis in budding yeast involves an actomyosin-based ring which assembles in a multistepped fashion during the cell cycle and constricts during cytokinesis. In this report, we have investigated the structural and regulatory events that occur at the onset of cytokinesis. The septins, which form an hour-glass like structure during early stages of the cell cycle, undergo dynamic rearrangements prior to cell division: the hourglass structure splits into two separate rings. The contractile ring, localized between the septin double rings, immediately undergoes contraction. Septin ring splitting is independent of actomyosin ring contraction as it still occurs in mutants where contraction fails. …
The Role Of Cholecystokinin In The Expression Of Seasonal Variation In The Feed Intake And Eating Pattern Of Red Deer (Cervus Elaphus), S. M. Rhind, S. R. Mcmillen, J. C. Pekas, E. Duff
The Role Of Cholecystokinin In The Expression Of Seasonal Variation In The Feed Intake And Eating Pattern Of Red Deer (Cervus Elaphus), S. M. Rhind, S. R. Mcmillen, J. C. Pekas, E. Duff
Roman L. Hruska U.S. Meat Animal Research Center: Reports
The role of cholecystokinin (CCK) in the expression of seasonal variation in feed intake and feeding activity in ruminants was investigated by active immunisation of castrated male red deer (Cervus elaphus). In April, animals of two groups (five animals per group) were immunised against either CCK or vehicle solution only and booster injections were administered at 2-month intervals for the following year. Measurements were conducted for a period of more than a year from July. There were no significant effects of immunisation on mean daily food intake. However, there was a significant interaction (P< .01) between immunisation and month (season), with respect to rate of feed ingestion during meals, with animals immunised against CCK exhibiting higher mean rates of ingestion during October to May but lower mean rates during June to September. It is concluded that systemic CCK has a role in the expression of seasonal variation in the rate of feed ingestion during meals in ruminants and that this, in turn, may affect the pattern of seasonal change in daily feed intake. Since there was no evidence of differences with treatment in profiles of insulin, growth hormone (GR), thyroxine (T4)' triiodothyronine (T …

Structure Of The Genes For Porcine Endometrial Secreted And Membrane Folate Binding Proteins, J. L. Vallet, T. P. L. Smith, T. S. Sonstegard, M. Heaton, S. C. Fahrenkrug
Roman L. Hruska U.S. Meat Animal Research Center: Reports
The endometrium of the pig produces two types of folate binding proteins (FBP) which, based on their sequences, are likely to be membrane (m) and secreted (s) forms. A clone containing both a gene coding for the sFBP cDNA and a gene coding for the mFBP was isolated from a yeast artificial chromosome (YAC) library. Each gene was subcloned and sequenced. The gene for sFBP spanned 4.4 kbp and included 5 exons. The mFBP gene spanned 7.0 kbp and also contained 5 exons. Structures of the genes were very similar for the last three exons, and this similarity was shared …

Abrogation Of Disease Development In Plants Expressing Animal Antiapoptotic Genes, M. B. Dickman, Y. K. Park, T. Oltersdorf, W. Li, T. Clemente, Roy C. French
Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications
An emerging topic in plant biology is whether plants display analogous elements of mammalian programmed cell death during development and defense against pathogen attack. In many plant– pathogen interactions, plant cell death occurs in both susceptible and resistant host responses. For example, specific recognition responses in plants trigger formation of the hypersensitive response and activation of host defense mechanisms, resulting in restriction of pathogen growth and disease development. Several studies indicate that cell death during hypersensitive response involves activation of a plant-encoded pathway for cell death. Many susceptible interactions also result in host cell death, although it is not clear …

Three Distinct Mechanisms Facilitate Genetic Isolation Of Sympatric Wheat Streak Mosaic Virus Lineages, Jeffrey Hall, Roy C. French, Gary L. Hein, Thomas Jack Morris, Drake Stenger
Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications
Cross-protection and vector transmission bottlenecks have been proposed as mechanisms facilitating genetic isolation of sympatric viral lineages. Molecular markers were used to monitor establishment and resolution of mixed infections with genetically defined strains of wheat streak mosaic virus (WSMV). Two closely related WSMV strains from the U.S. (Type and Sidney 81) exhibited reciprocal cross-protection in wheat, confirming this classic phenomenon as a mechanism of genetic isolation. In contrast, cross-protection between either U.S. strain and the divergent El Batan 3 strain from Mexico was unilateral, erratic, and only partially effective. Distribution of WSMV strains within individual leaves of plants supporting a …

INTSORMIL Impacts and Bulletins
Presently, worldwide, more than 800 million people are hungry and over one billion are desperately poor, and food demand is increasing rapidly. The majority of poor live in rural areas in developing countries and agricultural and food systems development is vital to economic growth; improving environmental quality; strengthening nutrition, health and child survival; improving the status of women; and promoting democratization. It is estimated that, between 1980 and 2030, the population ofow- and middle-income countries will more than double-to seven billion, compared with one billion for high-income countries. In the next 35 years, 2.5 billion people will be added to …

2001 Platte River Basin Ecosystem Symposium Proceedings
Water Current Newsletter
Over 75 people braved the wintry weather to attend the Eleventh Platte River Basin Ecosystem Symposium that convened in Kearney on 27 February 2001. Icy roads lead to cancellation of only 2 papers. Seventeen papers were presented and 5 posters were on display. Nebraska Public Radio and NTV News covered the event. The presentations were excellent and participants were well satisfied with not only the program but also the food. This year the symposium broadened its charge to include more discussion on community-based environmental protection, sustainable development, and policy-making. The Symposium was sponsored by the University of Nebraska Cooperative Extension …
