Sulfur Amino Acid Requirements Of Broilers From Two To Five Weeks Of Age, Jill A. Townsend, H. R. (Trey) Pope, Jason L. Emmert Jan 2001

Sulfur Amino Acid Requirements Of Broilers From Two To Five Weeks Of Age, Jill A. Townsend, H. R. (Trey) Pope, Jason L. Emmert

Discovery, The Student Journal of Dale Bumpers College of Agricultural, Food and Life Sciences

Phase-feeding (PF) in broiler chickens has been researched as a way to reduce feed costs without reducing growth performance and yield. Predicted amino acid requirements for PF are generated using linear regression equations derived from best estimates of lysine (Lys), sulfur amino acid (SAA), and threonine (Thr) requirements. During the late starter and early grower periods, predicted requirements for the SAA methionine (Met) and cysteine (Cys) are higher than levels recommended by the National Research Council (NRC), and previous research suggests that SAA may be lowered during the grower period without sacrificing growth performance or yield. The objective of this …

Lagging Behind: Fayetteville’S Historic Architecture, Jennifer Taylor, Jennifer Webb Jan 2001

Lagging Behind: Fayetteville’S Historic Architecture, Jennifer Taylor, Jennifer Webb

Discovery, The Student Journal of Dale Bumpers College of Agricultural, Food and Life Sciences

Architecture is a reflection of what is happening in the larger cultural, economic, and artistic scene. Therefore, understanding regional variations in trend adoption is significant to understanding the relationship of Fayetteville, Ark., to the larger national context. Local architecture is a reflection of the citizens of Fayetteville as consumers of popular culture. Simultaneous adoption theory was used as the framework of this study. The project objectives were to 1) document significant architectural styles within designated historical districts and nearby areas, and 2) compare local stylistic trends with national trends to determine fit. Findings indicate that Fayetteville lagged behind the national …

Development Of The Interactive Broiler Income Spreadsheet, Tara Shofner, H. L. Goodwin Jr. Jan 2001

Development Of The Interactive Broiler Income Spreadsheet, Tara Shofner, H. L. Goodwin Jr.

Discovery, The Student Journal of Dale Bumpers College of Agricultural, Food and Life Sciences

The poultry industry has experienced unprecedented increased efficiencies since 1960 in large part due to vertical integration facilitated by production contracts between growers and integrators. As growers seek information about contract production they need to be well informed about all aspects of the process, especially potential income. Recent poultry grower complaints have surfaced as a result of incorrect expense and revenue expectations. The Interactive Broiler Income Spreadsheet (IBIS) is being developed to enable current and prospective poultry producers to better estimate income. IBIS, an unbiased Excel™ spreadsheet tool to assist in decision making regarding broiler production profitability, uses actual grower …

Vasotocin Receptor Expression In The Brain And Pituitary Gland During The Ovulatory Cycle Of The Fowl, Kelly Shaffer, Jorge A. Vizcarra, John Kirby Jan 2001

Vasotocin Receptor Expression In The Brain And Pituitary Gland During The Ovulatory Cycle Of The Fowl, Kelly Shaffer, Jorge A. Vizcarra, John Kirby

Discovery, The Student Journal of Dale Bumpers College of Agricultural, Food and Life Sciences

Vasotocin receptors are members of seven transmembrane spanning G-protein associated receptors. Several isoforms have been recognized in mammals and birds. It has been shown that VT-1 expression occurs primarily in the brain while VT-2 expression occurs mainly in the pituitary. There is no current evidence to support that both VTR-1 and -2 are found in a single tissue. Our goal in this experiment was to see if VT-1 and VT-2 receptor mRNA expression varied in known sites of expression over the period of the ovulatory cycle of broiler breeder hens. In order to study potential changes in VT-1 and VT-2 …

Post-Glacial Fossils From Long Island Sound Off West Haven, Connecticut, Karl M. Waage, Copeland Macclintock, Leo J. Hickey Jan 2001

Post-Glacial Fossils From Long Island Sound Off West Haven, Connecticut, Karl M. Waage, Copeland Macclintock, Leo J. Hickey

Postilla

In 1957, Holocene marine concretions and mud clasts containing post-glacial fossils of marine invertebrates and land plants were dredged from offshore at Prospect Beach, West Haven, Connecticut, as part of a local beach sand-fill project. Indurated, calcareous concretions, dated at 4530 to 5330 BP, yielded a rich fauna, similar to today's, of bivalves (dominated by Argopecten and Anomia), gastropods (dominated by Bittium and Nassarius), and crustaceans, indicating accumulation in a shallow, subtidal environment perhaps 0.3 to 2 m (1 to 6 ft) below mean low water. Megafloral plant remains belonging to eight taxa—including Fagus grandifolia (American beech), two species of …

Genetic Correlations For Litter Weight Weaned With Growth, Prolificacy, And Wool Traits In Columbia, Polypay, Rambouillet, And Targhee Sheep, L. Dale Van Vleck, C. M. Bromley, G. D. Snowder Jan 2001

Genetic Correlations For Litter Weight Weaned With Growth, Prolificacy, And Wool Traits In Columbia, Polypay, Rambouillet, And Targhee Sheep, L. Dale Van Vleck, C. M. Bromley, G. D. Snowder

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

Total litter weight weaned at 120 d postpartum per ewe lambing is often believed to be a measure of range ewe productivity. Genetic correlations for litter weight weaned at 120 d with prolificacy, growth, and wool traits for Columbia, Polypay, Rambouillet, and Targhee sheep were estimated using REML with animal models. Observations per breed ranged from 5,140 to 7,083 for litter weight weaned, from 5,140 to 7,095 for prolificacy traits, from 7,750 to 9,530 for growth traits, and from 4,603 to 18,443 for wool traits. Heritability estimates for litter weight weaned were low and ranged from 0.02 to 0.11. Fraction …

Genetic And Phenotypic Parameters For Dietary Selection Of Mountain Big Sagebrush (Artemisia Tridentata Nutt. Ssp. Vaseyana [Rydb] Beetle) In Rambouillet Sheep, G. D. Snowder, J. W. Walker, K. L. Launchbaugh, L. Dale Van Vleck Jan 2001

Genetic And Phenotypic Parameters For Dietary Selection Of Mountain Big Sagebrush (Artemisia Tridentata Nutt. Ssp. Vaseyana [Rydb] Beetle) In Rambouillet Sheep, G. D. Snowder, J. W. Walker, K. L. Launchbaugh, L. Dale Van Vleck

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

The heritability of diet selection for mountain big sagebrush (Artemisia tridentata Nutt. ssp. vaseyana [Rydb] Beetle) by grazing sheep was estimated from fecal samples collected from 549 Rambouillet ewes. Fecal samples were collected in September and October during 1996 and 1997 from free-grazing ewes on intermountain sagebrush-bunchgrass rangelands at the U.S. Sheep Experiment Station in Idaho. The total number of fecal samples was 1,949. Fecal samples were evaluated for composition of big sagebrush by near-infrared spectroscopy. Percentage of sagebrush in the diet was less in September than in October (21.6 vs 31.7%, respectively). Single-trait and bivariate derivative-free REML analyses …

Expiating The Sins Of Yoder And Smith: Toward A Unified Theory Of First Amendment Exemptions From Neutral Laws Of General Applicability, Brian A. Freeman Jan 2001

Expiating The Sins Of Yoder And Smith: Toward A Unified Theory Of First Amendment Exemptions From Neutral Laws Of General Applicability, Brian A. Freeman

Missouri Law Review

This Article explores the extent to which the Constitution requires exemptions from neutral laws of general applicability in order to protect the free exercise of religion. Part I sets forth the current Supreme Court jurisprudence in this area, focusing on the most recent cases, which suggest that only laws that are not neutral or generally applicable are subject to strict scrutiny; otherwise, the majority believes that neutral generally applicable laws are subject to rational basis review. Part I also includes a discussion of analogous First Amendment freedom of expression cases, especially the “expressive conduct” cases, in which the court uses …

Peripheral Blood Leukocyte Response And Macrophage Function During Eimeria Adenoeides Infection In Turkey Poults, Amanda D. Drake, Sarah E. Heuer, Timothy G. Kimball, Timothy O. Peters, H. David Chapman, Gisela F. Erf Jan 2001

Peripheral Blood Leukocyte Response And Macrophage Function During Eimeria Adenoeides Infection In Turkey Poults, Amanda D. Drake, Sarah E. Heuer, Timothy G. Kimball, Timothy O. Peters, H. David Chapman, Gisela F. Erf

Discovery, The Student Journal of Dale Bumpers College of Agricultural, Food and Life Sciences

Intestinal coccidiosis, caused by various species of Eimeria, is an economically important disease of chickens and turkeys. The peripheral blood leukocyte response and macrophage functions during a coccidial infection in turkeys have not been defined. To examine these aspects of innate immunity during primary Eimeria infection in turkeys, 4-week-old poults were orally inoculated with either 50,000 E. adenoeides oocyst (24 infected poults) or water (24 control poults). To monitor the concentrations and proportions of white blood cells (WBC) throughout the course of infection, heparinized blood was collected from 12 infected and 12 control poults prior to inoculation (day 0), and …

Genetic And Biological Variation In Equine Infectious Anemia, Michael Belshan, Prasith Baccum, J. Lindsay Oaks, Brett A. Sponseller, Sean C. Murphy, James Cornette, Susan Carpenter Jan 2001

Genetic And Biological Variation In Equine Infectious Anemia, Michael Belshan, Prasith Baccum, J. Lindsay Oaks, Brett A. Sponseller, Sean C. Murphy, James Cornette, Susan Carpenter

Nebraska Center for Virology: Faculty Publications

Genetic and biological variation in the regulatory protein Rev of equine infectious anemia virus (EIAV) were examined throughout a clinically dynamic disease course of an experimentally infected pony. Following infection with the virulent EIAVWyo, the pony underwent a variable disease course, including an acute fever episode at 12 days postinfection (DPI), multiple recurrent fever episodes until 135 DPI, a prolonged subclinical period, and two late fever episodes. Viral RNA was isolated from the inoculum and sequential sera samples, and the rev exon 2/gp45 overlapping ORFs were amplified, cloned, and sequenced. Novel variants were found throughout infection, and genetic …

Encountering Amateurism: John Henry Wigmore And The Uses Of American Formalism, Annelise Riles Jan 2001

Encountering Amateurism: John Henry Wigmore And The Uses Of American Formalism, Annelise Riles

Public Law and Legal Theory Papers

This article explores the productive uses of amateurism in comparative law through a close reading of the life and work of John Henry Wigmore, the founder of the American tradition of comparative law who first came to the subject as a young missionary for the Langdellian style of American legal education in turn-of-the-century Japan. Drawing on anthropological and linguistic theory, the article explains amateurism as a post-Realist epithet for formalism. It seeks to counter the received view of the discipline as a pure product of American and European critiques of legal classicism by demonstrating how Wigmore's turn to the performative …

The Possible Enzymatic Differences Between Cattle And Sheep In Their Response To Ergot Alkaloids, Susan M. Cannon, Charles F. Rosenkrans, Ali Moubarak

Discovery, The Student Journal of Dale Bumpers College of Agricultural, Food and Life Sciences

Ergotamine is an ergot alkaloid associated with fescue toxicosis of livestock who have grazed endophyte-infected fescue. High performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) was used to detect individual or species-specific differences in the metabolism of ergotamine by liver cytochrome P450 of sheep and cattle. Livers were collected from four steers and two sheep. The diet of the steers used in this study consisted of two being fed a grain diet, one steer grazing endophyte-infected fescue, and the final steer grazing endophyte-free fescue. The two lambs were both fed a grain diet. Livers were prepared and examined for the disappearance of ergotamine and …
