Profitable Canola Production In The Northern Grainbelt Of Western Australia 2001, Paul Carmody, Adrian Cox Feb 2001

Profitable Canola Production In The Northern Grainbelt Of Western Australia 2001, Paul Carmody, Adrian Cox

Bulletins 4000 -

Canola is a member of the Brassicaceae family that also includes mustard, turnip, wild radish, cauliflower, cabbage and broccoli.

It is a winter growing oilseed that can be produced in most arable areas of Australia where winter crops are currently grown. Originally known as rapeseed using the varieties B. campestris, the varieties of B. napus have almost completely replaced this earlier variety in all the areas where the crop is grown.

The swing to B. napus varieties was due to their superior yields, resistance to blackleg and better quality oil and meal. Canola can be grown on a wide variety …

Sustainable Tourism Plan For The Houtman Abrolhos Islands, Fisheries Western Australia

Fisheries Management Papers

The Abrolhos coral reefs are the southernmost living reefs in the Indian Ocean. They have a unique assemblage of tropical species of fish, reef corals and other invertebrates, which live in close association with temperate species, particularly of algae, and species endemic to Western Australia. The Abrolhos is the centre of the fishery for the commercially valuable western rock lobster (Panulirus cygnus). Terrestrial flora and fauna of the Abrolhos are relict and provide important reference areas on ecological interactions. Virtually all the islands of the Abrolhos archipelago have sea bird nesting and breeding areas, and populations of some species of …

The Effects Of An Early Intervention Program With Preservice Teachers As Tutors On The Reading Achievement Of Primary Grade At Risk Children, Jeanne B. Cobb Feb 2001

The Effects Of An Early Intervention Program With Preservice Teachers As Tutors On The Reading Achievement Of Primary Grade At Risk Children, Jeanne B. Cobb

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

This article presents quantitative data from an experimental research study investigating the effects of an early intervention tutorial program on at risk children's reading achievement. Preservice teachers in an emergent literacy course served as tutors for at risk first, second, and third graders. The t-tests for independent samples revealed that the experimental group outperformed the control group on the vowels subtest and on total reading score at the first grade level. No statistically significant differences were found in grades two and three.

Post-Fledging Dispersal Of Burrowing Owls In Southwestern Idaho: Characterization Of Movements And Use Of Satellite Burrows, R. Andrew King, James R. Belthoff Feb 2001

Post-Fledging Dispersal Of Burrowing Owls In Southwestern Idaho: Characterization Of Movements And Use Of Satellite Burrows, R. Andrew King, James R. Belthoff

Biology Faculty Publications and Presentations

Using radiotelemetry, we monitored dispersing juvenile Western Burrowing Owls (Athene cunicularia hypugaea) within a migratory population in southwestern Idaho during 1994 and 1995. Owls remained within natal areas for an average (± SE) of 58 ± 3.4 days post-hatching before moving permanently beyond 300 m, which was our operational cutoff for dispersal from the natal area. On average, owls dispersed on 27 July (range: 15 July to 22 August), which was approximately 4 weeks after fledging. After initiating dispersal, juveniles continued moving farther away from their natal burrows and, by 61-65 days post-hatching, they had moved 0.6 ± …

Appreciating The Beauty Of Earth, Jame Schaefer Feb 2001

Appreciating The Beauty Of Earth, Jame Schaefer

Theology Faculty Research and Publications

Categories used by contemporary environmental philosophers to explore esthetic appreciation for the beauty of the physical world have parallels in reflections by patristic and medieval theologians on the beauty of God's creation, A sampling of the theologians' notions yields a promising foundation for ecological ethics from a theistic perspective, especially when understood from their world view at the time the text was written, reformulated to reflect broad scientific findings about the world today, and worked creatively to identify norms for human behavior.

Religion, Rationality, And Special Treatment, Jane Rutherford Feb 2001

Religion, Rationality, And Special Treatment, Jane Rutherford

William & Mary Bill of Rights Journal

Religion has always played a major role in American society, both politically and socially. Its influence on the Constitution is expressed in the Establishment and Free Exercise Clauses. Why is religion given special treatment by the Constitution? In this Article, Professor Jane Rutherford makes a structural argument for religious liberty. Rutherford posits that religion is treated differently not because of the content of its views, but because of the various other functions it serves, such as providing voices for outsiders and advancing non-market values. Rutherford concludes that we should return to more serious enforcement of the Establishment and Free Exercise …

The State Of The Canon In Constitutional Law: Lessons From The Jurisprudence Of John Marshall, David E. Marion Feb 2001

The State Of The Canon In Constitutional Law: Lessons From The Jurisprudence Of John Marshall, David E. Marion

William & Mary Bill of Rights Journal

Constitutional law has been an active battlefield as competing groups within the academy seek to deconstruct, reconstruct, and/or relegitimize the teaching and practice of law in the United States. Much of the rhetoric of the debate is couched in the language of rights. There is a danger that diminished attention to powers in the rhetoric and teaching of constitutional law may compromise sober and moderate constitutional reasoning. By reinvigorating reflection on powers-related issues, the legal profession can do its part to promote sobriety, and hence an added dose of prudence, in constitutional reflection and discourse by a democratic citizenry whose …

Who Speaks For The State?: Religious Speakers On Government Platforms And The Role Of Disclaiming Endorsement, Steven H. Aden

William & Mary Bill of Rights Journal

The recent Supreme Court decision in Santa Fe Independent School District v. Doe prohibits prayer at school-sponsored events. In this Article the author analyzes the development of Supreme Court jurisprudence in the area of religion in public schools. Noting the tension between the Establishment and Free Speech Clauses, the author proposes the use of disclaimers to allow student expression at school events to avoid violating the Establishment Clause.

Outrageous Opponents: How To Stop Them In Closing Argument, Ronald L. Carlson, Michael S. Carlson Feb 2001

Outrageous Opponents: How To Stop Them In Closing Argument, Ronald L. Carlson, Michael S. Carlson

Popular Media

Most attorneys try to sum up their cases in a fashion that comports with accepted law and local practice. All too frequently, however, one has the misfortune of running into Rambo, the over-the-top opponent. Before his peroration is concluded, Rambo has trampled on the law of trial practice by making half a dozen improper arguments. He urges evidence that never came up at trial. He injects hearsay into the proceedings. He adds his own opinions about which witnesses were lying and the legal fault of your client. And, this is just the beginning. Adding insult to injury, the unjust tactics …
