The 2000-2001 Nebraska Christmas Bird Count, Stephen J. Dinsmore Mar 2001

The 2000-2001 Nebraska Christmas Bird Count, Stephen J. Dinsmore

Nebraska Bird Review

The 2000-2001 Christmas Bird Count (CBC) period included nine counts in Nebraska, down one from last year. New this year was the resurrected Crawford count while Kearney and Dakota-Dix were missing (Table 1). These counts reported a total of 117 species and nearly 138,000 individuals, which is not bad for such a cold count period. Counts were scattered statewide, but most effort was in the eastern half of the state where most of the birders are. The top count again this year was Lake McConaughy with 93 species. Other excellent totals included 71 at Harlan County and 65 at Branched …

Renewing The Civic Mission Of The American Research University, Barry Checkoway Mar 2001

Renewing The Civic Mission Of The American Research University, Barry Checkoway

Higher Education

Should the American research university have a strategy for renewing its civic mission in a diverse democratic society and, if so, what should it be?

Many American research universities were established with a civic mission to prepare students for active participation in a diverse democracy and to develop knowledge for the improvement of communities. Today, however, it is hard to find top administrators with consistent commitment to this mission, few faculty members consider it central to their role, and community groups that approach the university for assistance often find it difficult to get what they need.

Environmental Law Slogans For The New Millennium, Michael Allan Wolf Mar 2001

Environmental Law Slogans For The New Millennium, Michael Allan Wolf

UF Law Faculty Publications

Contrary to the bleakest predictions offered by environmental fatalists during the latter half of the 1900s, humanity and much of the plant and animal kingdom survived New Year's Eve 1999. Similarly, contrary to the dire warnings of industrial organizations and lobbyists that overburdening environmental regulations would spell the end of profitable, American capitalism, the year 2000 dawned in the United States with the world's most extensive array of anti-pollution and pro-conservation measures regulating the globe's most impressive economic engines. New times demand new paradigms; it is much more than a calendar change that occasions a reconsideration of the status and …

The Effect Of Methylparathion On Cholinesterase Activity In Cockle (Anadara Granosa L.) Muscle Tissues, Yanin Limpanon, Sukanya Phalitakul, Griangyut Tapcharoen, Janenuj Wongtavatchai, Piyarat Subhachalat Mar 2001

The Effect Of Methylparathion On Cholinesterase Activity In Cockle (Anadara Granosa L.) Muscle Tissues, Yanin Limpanon, Sukanya Phalitakul, Griangyut Tapcharoen, Janenuj Wongtavatchai, Piyarat Subhachalat

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

The effect of methylparathion on cholinesterase activity in foot muscle tissues of cockle were evaluated. Ninety - five healthy cockle were randomly divided into control and experimental groups. The experimental group was exposed to 10 ppb of methylparathion for 90 hours. Measurements of cholinesterase activity revealed increasing enzyme activity in foot muscle (p < 0.05) in the exposed animals while clinical observations showed no differences between the groups. The results indicate that methylparathion affects the observed activity of cholinesterase in cockle. However, it should be noted that the data do not correlate with those of previous studies reported in other aquatic animal species.

Where Has Rotuman Culture Gone? And What Is It Doing There?, Alan Howard, Jan Rensel Mar 2001

Where Has Rotuman Culture Gone? And What Is It Doing There?, Alan Howard, Jan Rensel

Pacific Studies

This article explores the now-problematic concept of “culture” and related terms in the context of a diffuse transnational Rotuman population, more than three- fourths of whom live abroad in Fiji, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, the United States, and Europe. We begin by reflecting on prevailing criticisms of the culture concept, then present data in historical perspective on Rotuman communities in five different locations: Rotuma, Fiji, Australia, New Zealand, and Hawai‘i. In presenting these data we examine the patterning effects of four key variables, in- cluding (1) macrosocietal attitudes, (2) the nature of the migration flow, (3) the size of communities, …

Vertical And Horizontal Transcendence, Ursula Goodenough Mar 2001

Vertical And Horizontal Transcendence, Ursula Goodenough

Biology Faculty Research

Transcendence is explored from two perspectives: the traditional concept wherein the origination of the sacred is “out there,” and the alternate concept wherein the sacred originates “here.” Each is evaluated from the perspectives of aesthetics and hierarchy. Both forms of transcendence are viewed as essential to the full religious life.

Contributions Of Identifiable Neurons And Neuron Classes To Lamprey Vertebrate Neurobiology, James T. Buchanan Mar 2001

Contributions Of Identifiable Neurons And Neuron Classes To Lamprey Vertebrate Neurobiology, James T. Buchanan

Biological Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

Among the advantages offered by the lamprey brainstem and spinal cord for studies of the structure and function of the nervous system is the unique identifiability of several pairs of reticulospinal neurons in the brainstem. These neurons have been exploited in investigations of the patterns of sensory input to these cells and the patterns of their outputs to spinal neurons, but no doubt these cells could be used much more effectively in exploring their roles in descending control of the spinal cord. The variability of cell positions of neurons in the spinal cord has precluded the recognition of unique spinal …

A Speech Interface To Genealogical Data, Deryle W. Lonsdale Mar 2001

A Speech Interface To Genealogical Data, Deryle W. Lonsdale

Faculty Publications

This talk presents an interface that has been developed to enable users to access genealogical information via speech. Whereas the more traditional approaches for accessing data are prevalent in today’s commercial genealogical products (e.g. windows, icons, and point-and-click methods), hands-free access to information is becoming increasingly popular. There would seem to be a potential demand for speech-based access to genealogical information, particularly among enthusiasts who might require mobile access, or those who are uncomfortable with or unable to use manual methods. Yet software to perform this function for genealogical access does not appear to be widely available yet.

Defining Human Services, Chaim Zins Mar 2001

Defining Human Services, Chaim Zins

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

This study aims at formulating adequate criteria for designing the field of human services. Based on a conceptual analysis of "human services" the study establishes the theoretical ground of a four-category model for classifying human service organizations, and three alternative definitions of the field. The classificatory principle underlying the model and the definitions reflects the contribution of human services to overall societal wellbeing. I conclude the study by discussing the implications for social welfare policy planning, service design and evaluation, and shaping the nature of the helping professions.

Mapping Weekly Rangeland Vegetation Productivity Using Modis Algorithms, Matthew Clark Reeves, Jerome C. Winslow, Steven W. Running Mar 2001

Mapping Weekly Rangeland Vegetation Productivity Using Modis Algorithms, Matthew Clark Reeves, Jerome C. Winslow, Steven W. Running

Numerical Terradynamic Simulation Group Publications

The great spatial extent of rangelands combined with recent emphasis on rangeland health has prompted a need for more efficient and cost effective management tools. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) sensor of the Earth Observing System (EOS) will offer improved and more timely monitoring of rangeland vegetation, and, unlike any previous satellite sensor, the publicly available MODIS data stream will include estimates of rangeland productivity. These estimations of rangeland productivity can be used regionally for measuring biomass production and will be available every eight-days, with global coverage at 1- km^ resolution. MODIS derived estimates of rangeland productivity combine remote …
