Heroic Leadership: A Native American Legend, Sitting Bull 1831 - 1890, Charley Price
Theses and Graduate Projects
This research paper reviews and assesses the heroic leadership of the legendary Native America Sitting Bull. A significant leader of the Oceti Sakowin Nation, or commonly referred to as the Sioux Nation Sitting Bull demonstrates great charisma and courage in his efforts to save and maintain his people's traditional way of life. The Sioux way of life was gradually affected by the westward advancement of settlers and disrupted by the U.S. government's use of military force, in its quest to control Native American lands and expand the United States. Sitting Bull emerged as a heroic leader by gaining the support …

Bronchodilator, Spasmolytic And Calcium Antagonist Activities Of Nigella Sativa Seeds (Kalonji): A Traditional Herbal Product With Multiple Medicinal Uses, A H. Gilani, N Aziz, I M. Khurram, K S. Chaudhary, A Iqbal
Department of Biological & Biomedical Sciences
Objective: The seeds of Nigella sativa locally known as "Kalonji" has been used in traditional medicine for the treatment of a variety of diseases including diarrhoea and asthma. The crude extract of N. sativa seeds (Ns.Cr) was studied in vitro for its possible spasmolytic and bronchodilator activities to rationalize the folkloric uses.
Methods: Isolated rabbit jejunum and guinea-pig tracheal preparations were set up in Tyrode's and Kreb's solutions respectively and aerated with 5% CO2 in oxygen. Isotonic and isometric responses were measured on Bioscience oscillograph and Grass polygraph respectively. Results: The Ns.Cr caused a dose-dependent (0.1-3.0 mg/ml) relaxation of spontaneous contractions …

An Outsider's View Of China's Insider Trading Law, Charles Zhen Qu
An Outsider's View Of China's Insider Trading Law, Charles Zhen Qu
Washington International Law Journal
China's insider trading law can be found in the country's first unified securities industry law, Securities Law of the People's Republic of China, which came into force on July 1, 1999. The provisions of this law relating to insider trading, however, do not seem to help achieve the legislative purpose of the Securities Law, namely, to protect the interest of investors and promote the development of a socialist economy. The inadequacy of the current regime lies in the overly narrow definitions of "insider" and "inside information," the lack of workability of civil liability provisions, and the failure of China's Securities …

Patronage And Bureaucracy In The Hawaiian Kingdom, 1840–1893, Colin Newbury
Patronage And Bureaucracy In The Hawaiian Kingdom, 1840–1893, Colin Newbury
Pacific Studies
The government of the Hawaiian monarchy operated as a patrimonial system until constitutional change in 1887 restricted the power of the king to control executive, legislative, and judicial institutions. Ministers, governors, senior offi- cials, legislators, and judges owed their positions to royal favor and influence, thus continuing for Hawaiian and foreign “service gentry” the practices of the pre-1840 kingdom by valuing loyalty higher than efficiency or selection by com- petition. At a second level, patronage by governors and senior officials expanded the ranks of those executives who ran public finance, land administration, in- ternal trade, education, police, and the judiciary. …

First Record Of A Reddish Egret For Nebraska, Stephen J. Dinsmore
First Record Of A Reddish Egret For Nebraska, Stephen J. Dinsmore
Nebraska Bird Review
On 27 September 2000, I was birding the west end of Lake McConaughy from Marina Landing. At 2:15 p.m., I noticed a few egrets farther east off Cedar Vue. By 2:30 p.m. I had arrived at Cedar Vue and began looking over the egrets. The egrets were loosely scattered in a small area with numerous Great Blue Herons, approximately 400m from the north shore of the lake. There were six egrets present--4 Great Egrets, 1 Snowy Egret, and an intermediate-sized bird that I identified as a white morph Reddish Egret. The Reddish Egret foraged for about half an hour and …

First Confirmed Records Of Dusky Flycatcher For Nebraska, Stephen J. Dinsmore, W. Ross Silcock
Nebraska Bird Review
Prior to the fall of 2000, there were no accepted records of Dusky Flycatcher for Nebraska. With the exception of a single sight record by Silcock (17 May 1992) judged "Hypothetical" by the Nebraska Ornithologists' Union Records Committee, this species had been unreported in Nebraska. Dusky Flycatchers breed locally in the Black Hills of South Dakota (Peterson 1990) and were presumed to occur in western Nebraska. Here, we report the capture of three Dusky Flycatchers in Kimball County and three additional sight records from western Nebraska.
On 31 August 2000, we were mist netting below the dam of Oliver Reservoir …

Winter Field Report, December 2000 To February 2001, W. Ross Silcock
Nebraska Bird Review
What a difference a year makes! After all sorts of unusual midwinter reports last winter, this winter seemed more normal, as entire species actually left the state for a while. Although not extremely cold, the cool temperatures were persistent in November and December, flushing out many of the semi-hardy species and freezing most bodies of water.
There were, nevertheless, some notable tardies: a first Panhandle winter Wood Duck; a Spotted Sandpiper in December at Harlan County Res; a first December Eastern Phoebe; a third January Gray Catbird; a second December Pine Warbler; a 3rd overwintering Yellow-headed Blackbird; and the farthest …

Differentiation Of Two Bovine Lentiviruses By A Monoclonal Antibody On The Basis Of Epitope Specificity, Ling Zheng, Shucheng Zhang, Charles Wood, Sanjay Kapil, Graham E. Wilcox, Thomas A. Loughlin, H. C. Minocha
Nebraska Center for Virology: Faculty Publications
Bovine immunodeficiency virus (BIV) and Jembrana disease virus (JDV) are bovine lentiviruses that are closely related genetically. A recombinant fusion protein containing the capsid protein of BIV expressed in Escherichia coli was used to immunize mice and produce monoclonal antibodies. Six hybridomas specific for BIV capsid protein were identified, and one antibody, designated 10H1, was characterized further. Competitive binding assays were performed to analyze the topography of antigenic determinants by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay and demonstrated the existence of at least three distinct antigenic determinants on capsid protein. The monoclonal antibody reacted specifically with both BIV capsid and the recombinant fusion …

Background. The total cavopulmonary connection (TCPC) design continues to be refined on the basis of flow analysis at the connection site. These refinements are of importance for myocardial energy conservation in the univentricular supported circulation. In vivo magnetic resonance phase contrast imaging provides semiquantitative flow visualization information. The purpose of this study was to understand the in vivo TCPC flow characteristics obtained by magnetic resonance phase contrast imaging and compare the results with our previous in vitro TCPC flow experiments in an effort to further refine TCPC surgical design.
Methods. Twelve patients with TCPC underwent sedated three-dimensional, multislice …

The Forgotten Origins Of The Ecumenical Movement In England: The Grindelwald Conferences, 1892-95, Christopher Oldstone-Moore
History Faculty Publications
Ruth Rouse, writing in A History of the Ecumenical Movement, made an extraordinary claim about the origins of modern ecumenism. She identified two factors in the 1890s that, in her words, "changed the course of Church history and made possible the modern ecumenical movement." One was the Student Christian Movement, established m 1895 by the American Methodist layman, John R. Mott. The other factor was the Grindelwald (Switzerland) Reunion Conferences, an assembly mostly of English church leaders organized by a Methodist minister, Henry Lunn, between 1892 and 1895. Mott's movement is very well known to modern readers. The Grindelwald Conferences, …

The Catholic Teacher: Our Greatest Resource, John King Mussio
Journal of Catholic Education
The 56th annual meeting of the National Catholic Educational Association was held in Atlantic City, New Jersey, in 1959. The following essay is a transcript of a talk delivered at that meeting on March 31, by the then Bishop of Steubenville, Ohio, the Most Reverend John King Mussio. He was speaking to the Secondary School Department about the importance of Catholic high schools and the vital role of teachers in the education and formation of youth. Although over 40 years have passed, Mussio cites many problems and challenges facing Catholic educators that are still with us today. His praise of …
