Aluminium Toxicokinetics: An Updated Minireview, Robert A. Yokel, Patrick J. Mcnamara Apr 2001

Aluminium Toxicokinetics: An Updated Minireview, Robert A. Yokel, Patrick J. Mcnamara

Pharmaceutical Sciences Faculty Publications

This MiniReview updates and expands the MiniReview of aluminium toxicokinetics by Wilhelm et al. published by this journal in 1990. The use of 26Al, analyzed by accelerator mass spectrometry, now enables determination of Al toxicokinetics under physiological conditions. There is concern about aluminium in drinking water. The common sources of aluminium for man are reviewed. Oral Al bioavailability from water appears to be about 0.3%. Food is the primary common source. Al bioavailability from food has not been adequately determined. Industrial and medicinal exposure, and perhaps antiperspirant use, can significantly increase absorbed aluminium. Inhalation bioavailability of airborne soluble Al …

When People Are The Means: Negotiating With Respect, Jonathan R. Cohen Apr 2001

When People Are The Means: Negotiating With Respect, Jonathan R. Cohen

UF Law Faculty Publications

Most scholarship on negotiation ethics has focused on the topics of deception and disclosure. In this Article, I argue for considering a related, but distinct, ethical domain within negotiation ethics. That domain is the ethics of orientation. In contrast to most forms of human interaction, a clear purpose of negotiation is to get the other party to take an action on one's behalf, or at least to explore that possibility. This gives rise to a core ethical tension in negotiation that I call the object-subject tension: how does one reconcile the fact that the other party is a potential means …

A Review Of The Benefits Of Flax Supplementation, Samuel P. Held Apr 2001

A Review Of The Benefits Of Flax Supplementation, Samuel P. Held

Theses and Dissertations

We have become a society of convenience. Healthy foods that were staples for thousands of years have become replaced by processed foods with long shelf lives. This has been done to the detriment of our nutrition and health. Flax is one such replaced food item. A staple food for hundreds of generations, flax had become scarce in our diet until recent interest spurred by research found flax to be one of the best sourc es on earth for alpha-linolenic acid an Omega- three fatty acid, plant lignans, and contains a large amount of dietary fiber. Potentially these constituents can have …

Judging In The Days Of The Early Republic: A Critique Of Judge Richard Arnold's Use Of History In Anastasoff V. United States, R. Ben Brown Apr 2001

Judging In The Days Of The Early Republic: A Critique Of Judge Richard Arnold's Use Of History In Anastasoff V. United States, R. Ben Brown

The Journal of Appellate Practice and Process

Judge Arnold writes in his opinion that courts have the power to interpret or find the law but not create it. He argues that this practice was well established during colonial times and that it was adopted at the nation’s creation. The source of law during the formation of the United States is not as clear as Judge Arnold claims. Courts applied their roles differently in each jurisdiction. The complex history of the appropriate role of the judiciary contradicts Judge Arnold’s claim.

Treefall Gaps And The Maintenance Of Species Diversity In A Tropical Forest, Stefan A. Schnitzer, Walter P. Carson Apr 2001

Treefall Gaps And The Maintenance Of Species Diversity In A Tropical Forest, Stefan A. Schnitzer, Walter P. Carson

Biological Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

The maintenance of species diversity by treefall gaps is a long‐standing paradigm in forest ecology. Gaps are presumed to provide an environment in which tree species of differing competitive abilities partition heterogeneous resources. The empirical evidence to support this paradigm, however, remains scarce, and some recent studies even suggest that gaps do not maintain the diversity of shade‐tolerant species. Although there is evidence that gaps maintain the diversity of pioneer trees, most of this evidence comes from studies that did not make comparisons between gaps and intact forest sites (controls). Further, nearly all studies on the maintenance of diversity by …

Adenosine Triphosphate-Dependent Degradation Of A Fluorescent Λ N Substrate Mimic By Lon Protease, Irene Lee, Anthony J. Berdis Apr 2001

Adenosine Triphosphate-Dependent Degradation Of A Fluorescent Λ N Substrate Mimic By Lon Protease, Irene Lee, Anthony J. Berdis

Chemistry Faculty Publications

Escherichia coli Lon exhibits a varying degree of energy requirement toward hydrolysis of different substrates. Efficient degradation of protein substrates requires the binding and hydrolysis of ATP such that the intrinsic ATPase of Lon is enhanced during protein degradation. Degradation of synthetic tetrapeptides, by contrast, is achieved solely by ATP binding with concomitant inhibition of the ATPase activity. In this study, a synthetic peptide (FRETN 89-98), containing residues 89–98 of λ N protein and a fluorescence donor (anthranilamide) and quencher (3-nitrotyrosine), has been examined for ATP-dependent degradation by E. coli and human Lon proteases. The cleavage profile of FRETN 89-98 …

Environmental Effects On Yield And Agronomic Traits Of Common Bean (Phaseolus Vulgaris L.), Tadesse Mebrahtu, Teklu Andebrhan, Ali Mohamed

Virginia Journal of Science

Common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) demand is increasing with an alarming rate around the world, especially in Latin America, Africa, and Asia. Therefore, increase bean yield per hectare is the best way to meet the world demand rather than expansion of area under cultivation. The objectives of this experiment were to determine the genotypic variations for green bean and dry seed yield and magnitude of genotype x environment interaction effects on yield and yield components of common bean. Thirteen genotypes were planted during the 1992, 1994, and 1995 growing seasons. Genotypes were evaluated for green pod and seed …

Water In A Changing World, Robert B. Jackson, Stephen R. Carpenter, Clifford N. Dahm, Diane M. Mcknight, Robert J. Naiman, Sandra L. Postel, Steven W. Running

Numerical Terradynamic Simulation Group Publications

Life on earth depends on the continuous flow of materials through the air, water, soil, and food webs of the biosphere. The movement of water through the hydrological cycle comprises the largest of these flows, delivering an estimated I 10,000 cubic kilometers (km^> of water to the land each year as snow and rainfall. Solar energy drives the hydrological cycle, vaporizing water from the surface of oceans, lakes, and rivers as well as from soils and plants (evapotranspiration). Water vapor rises into the atmosphere where it cools, condenses, and eventually rains down anew. This renewable freshwater supply sustains life on …

The Effect Of Food Safety Training On The Knowledge, Behavior/Attitude And Health Of Fourth Graders And Their Parents, Todd W. Tonova

Graduate Student Dissertations, Theses, Capstones, and Portfolios

Education is an important part of a person's daily life. Basic, fundamental skills for daily living should be part of this education. At present, there is no consistent type of food safety training given to all students in the United States public school system. The aforementioned food safety training should involve the basic skills of personal hygiene: including hand-washing; understanding bacteria, their ability to multiply, and travel into our homes and our refrigerators; proper temperatures of food products; and safe steps of food-handling. These safe steps of food handling include: safe cooling procedures, safe thawing procedures, and proper washing of …

Music constitutes the bed-rock, the grass roots of popular consciousness.-Ronnie Graham As long as societies have existed on this planet, music has existed as a shared activity within these societies.Music acts as a mirrow of culture, allowing a more intimate view of the history, traditions, troubles and successes of those people brought together by the music.Whether it is traditional African music or Western pop music, the idea of sharing something withing the sounds and the silence has always remained the driving force behind musical creation. In this paper, I explore the effects of Westernization on traditional Ga music. What is …

The Challenges Food Crops Farmers Face In The Ahanta West District: Friends Of The Nation Demonstration Farm, A Possible Solution., Meghan Crouch

African Diaspora ISPs

This paper seeks to explore the challenges food crop farmers face in the Ahanta West district and some of the programs in place to raise both the productivity and the living standards of the farmers and their families. Through the examination of their current practices, and the factors that hinder their work, the constraints farmers are confronted with will be more fully understood. The Friends of the Nation Demonstration Farm is a possible solution. Their objectives will be presented as well as examples of their current projects designed to educate farmers about new practices. Finally, I attempt to identify the …
