Fisheries Research Report No. 126 - A 12-Month Survey Of Recreational Fishing In The Swan-Canning Estuary Basin Of Western Australia During 1998-99, B E. Malseed, Neil R. Sumner Jun 2001

Fisheries Research Report No. 126 - A 12-Month Survey Of Recreational Fishing In The Swan-Canning Estuary Basin Of Western Australia During 1998-99, B E. Malseed, Neil R. Sumner

Fisheries Research Reports

A survey of recreational boat-based and shore-based fishing in the Swan-Canning Estuary Basin was conducted between August 1998 and July 1999. During the survey 1,302 interviews were conducted at boat ramps. The majority of these (62%) were not involved in fishing or crabbing activities, with a further 18 per cent fishing in the adjacent ocean. Of the remainder, 139 boats had been crabbing and 154 angling (29 were both crabbing and angling) within the Swan-Canning Estuary Basin. In addition to the interviews at boat ramps, 378 shore-based fishing parties were interviewed.

The survey estimated the total annual boat-based recreational fishing …

Fisheries Research Report No.128 - Aquaculture And Related Biological Attributes Of Abalone Species In Australia - A Review., Kylie A. Freeman

Fisheries Research Reports

China and Taiwan are the major producers of cultured abalone; with annual production estimated at 3,500 and 3,000 tonnes respectively. The world production of cultured abalone sold in 1999 was 7,775 tonnes. Australian farm production was still relatively low (89 tonne in 1999) but numerous abalone farms have been proposed and many have been constructed. On a national scale, Tasmania and South Australia are the major states involved in temperate abalone culture; however, new projects have commenced in Victoria and considerable interest exists in New South Wales. Pilot scale trials with tropical abalone aquaculture using the Donkey-ear abalone (Haliotis asinina) …

Fish Protection Measures To Ensure Fish For The Future, Jo Bunting Jun 2001

Fish Protection Measures To Ensure Fish For The Future, Jo Bunting

Fisheries Management Papers

The protection of Western Australia's aquatic animals, plants and habitats is important for many reasons. Fish, and many aquatic invertebrates, have significant commercial, recreational and social importance. Aquatic habitats provide food, refuge and breeding areas for fish and other animals. In addition, some habitats, such as rocky reefs and seagrass meadows, act as nursery sites for juvenile animals. Some habitats and their inhabitants (such as coral reefs) also have aesthetic values which support economically and socially important industries, such as tourism.

Inclusive Outdoor Education And Environmental Interpretation, Leo H. Mcavoy And Stuart J. Schleien Jun 2001

Inclusive Outdoor Education And Environmental Interpretation, Leo H. Mcavoy And Stuart J. Schleien

Taproot: A Journal of Outdoor Education

Traditional outdoor education and environmental interpretive facilities and programs rarely include persons with physical and cognitive disabilities and therefore do not serve a major segment of the population. This is significant when one considers that there are approximately 43 million Americans who have some form of disability (National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitative Research, 1998). Most people with disabilities attend educational and recreational programs, including interpretive programs, with family and friends (Mactavish & Schleien, 2000). If a person with a disability is discouraged from attending outdoor education and interpretive programs because of perceived lack of access or accommodation, then that …

Amino Acid Concentrations In Fluids From The Bovine Oviduct And Uterus And In Ksom-Based Culture Media., Y M Elhassan, G Wu, A C Leanez, R J Tasca, A J Watson, M E Westhusin

Obstetrics & Gynaecology Publications

Amino acids in bovine oviductal and uterine fluids were measured and compared with those in modified simplex optimized medium (KSOM) supplemented with either fetal calf serum or Minimum Essential Medium amino acids in addition to bovine serum albumin, fetal calf serum or polyvinyl alcohol. Concentrations of cysteine, threonine, tryptophan, alanine, aspartate, glycine, glutamate, proline, beta-alanine, and citrulline were higher in oviductal fluids than in KSOM-based culture media. Nonessential and essential amino acids were present in ratios of 5:1 and 2:1 in oviductal and uterine fluids, respectively. Concentrations of alanine (3.7 mM), glycine (14.1 mM) and glutamate (5.5 mM) were high …

Roman L. Hruska U.S. Meat Animal Research Center: Reports

Breed differences in performance characteristics are an important genetic resource for improving efficiency of beef production. Diverse breeds are required to exploit heterosis and complementarity through crossbreeding and development of composite populations to match genetic potential with diverse markets, feed resources and climates. Beef producers are under increasing pressure to reduce fat while maintaining or improving tenderness and palatability of products. This report presents preliminary results from Cycle VI of the Germplasm Evaluation Program at the Roman L. Hruska U.S. Meat Animal Research Center (U.S. Meat Animal Research Center) which focuses primarily on characterization of Continental European breeds with a …

Hypertextile Scholarship: Digitally Editing The Bayeux Tapestry, Martin Kennedy Foys Jun 2001

Hypertextile Scholarship: Digitally Editing The Bayeux Tapestry, Martin Kennedy Foys

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979–2011)

The dilemma of studying the Tapestry is twofold. In traditional editions of the textile, the discursive limits of the printed page require either a sacrifice of narrative fluidity for detailed resolution, or the converse. Put another way, in a printed edition, "readers" of the Tapestry either are given the document in gloriously detailed, high-resolution plates that fragment the textile's continuity, or are faced with small-scale reproductions that capture large narrative blocks but lack any comprehensive magnified detail. Additionally, since its rediscovery in the 1720s and like any complex and canonical narrative expression, the Tapestry has generated hundreds of scholarly books …

Comments On Nebraska's Falconiform And Stringiform Bird Fauna, Paul A. Johnsgard Jun 2001

Comments On Nebraska's Falconiform And Stringiform Bird Fauna, Paul A. Johnsgard

Nebraska Bird Review

Owing to a lack of long-term survey data, determining whether Nebraska's raptor numbers are stable, increasing, or decreasing is difficult. Unlike our relatively well-monitored gamebirds, no regular surveys have been performed, and raptors barely register on the state's Breeding Bird Surveys or Christmas Bird Counts, owing to their relative rarity. However, a few data-points of interest do exist, which might be worth summarizing.

In one of the first multi-year surveys of Sandhills avifauna, H. Elliott McClure (1966) summarized raptor abundance data based on three years of study in the Nebraska Sandhills (1 941-1 944). During that period, he typically drove …
