Percutaneous Intramyocardial Chemical Ablation: Preliminary Results In The Treatment Of Ventricular Tachycardia Model Of Dogs, Caiyi Lau, Xuanli Liu, Congcun Huang, Xuan Wei

Journal of the Hong Kong College of Cardiology

Sustained ventricular tachycardia simulated by implanted subepicardial pacing microelectrodes in 18 dogs was treated by a novel percutaneous intramyocardial chemical ablation with 100% ethanol. The ablation catheter consists of a specially designed mapping catheter and a steerable chemical ablation catheter. Ventricular tachycardia (VT) mapping and ablating manipulation was taken under the fluoroscopy in a catheterization laboratory.

Results: The success rate of chemical ablation was 100%. The induction rate of new VT was 16.7% at 4 weeks after ablation. The acute response of VT to chemical ablation included: (1) the focus was ablated completely within 3 seconds (73.3%), and (2) VT …

The Wasp-Like Protein Scar Regulates Macropinocytosis, Phagocytosis And Endosomal Membrane Flow In Dictyostelium, David J. Seastone, Ed Harris, Lesly A. Temesvari, James E. Bear, Charles L. Saxe, James Cardelli Jul 2001

The Wasp-Like Protein Scar Regulates Macropinocytosis, Phagocytosis And Endosomal Membrane Flow In Dictyostelium, David J. Seastone, Ed Harris, Lesly A. Temesvari, James E. Bear, Charles L. Saxe, James Cardelli

Publications

Scar, a member of the WASp protein family, was discovered in Dictyostelium discoideum during a genetic screen for second-site mutations that suppressed a developmental defect. Disruption of the scar gene reduced the levels of cellular F-actin by 50%. To investigate the role of Scar in endocytosis, phagocytosis and endocytic membrane trafficking, processes that depend on actin polymerization, we have analyzed a Dictyostelium cell line that is genetically null for Scar. Rates of fluid phase macropinocytosis and phagocytosis are significantly reduced in the scar- cell-line. In addition, exocytosis of fluid phase is delayed in these cells and movement of fluid phase …

Cyclooxygenase-2 And Prostaglandin E(2)(Pge(2)) Receptor Messenger Rnas Are Affected By Bovine Oocyte Maturation Time And Cumulus-Oocyte Complex Quality, And Pge(2) Induces Moderate Expansion Of The Bovine Cumulus In Vitro., M D Calder, A N Caveney, M E Westhusin, A J Watson

Obstetrics & Gynaecology Publications

Expression of cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) and prostaglandin E(2) (PGE(2)) receptor 2 (EP2) are necessary for rodent cumulus expansion in vivo. Prostaglandin E(2) receptor 3 (EP3) has been detected in bovine preovulatory follicles and corpora lutea. The current experiments examined the effect of PGE(2) on bovine cumulus expansion in vitro and expression of COX-2, EP1, EP2, EP3, and EP4 mRNAs in bovine cumulus-oocyte complexes (COCs) at 0, 6, 12, 18, and 24 h time points during maturation in vitro. Concentrations of PGE(2) above 50 ng/ml resulted in moderate cumulus expansion of bovine COCs, but expansion did not occur in the absence of …

Hybrid Organizations And The Alignment Of Interests: The Case Of Fannie Mae And Freddie Mac, Jonathan G.S. Koppell Jul 2001

Hybrid Organizations And The Alignment Of Interests: The Case Of Fannie Mae And Freddie Mac, Jonathan G.S. Koppell

Publications from President Jonathan G.S. Koppell

This article explores the political influence of government-sponsored enterprises (GSEs). Using Congress's overhaul of the regulatory infrastructure for Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac as a case study, the article presents two principal findings: (1) The characteristics that distinguish government-sponsored enterprises from traditional government agencies and private companies endow Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac with unique political resources; and (2) the alignment of interest groups around Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac is subject to strategic manipulation by the GSEs. A triangular model of this alignment is proposed and employed to analyze the legislative outcome. The case has implications for students of …

Mononuclear Phagocyte Differentiation, Activation, And Viral Infection Regulate Matrix Metalloproteinase Expression: Implications For Human Immunodeficiency Virus Type 1-Associated Dementia, Anuja Ghorpade, Raisa Persidskaia, Radhika Suryadevara, Myhanh Che, Xiao Juan Liu, Yuri Persidsky, Howard Gendelman

Nebraska Center for Virology: Faculty Publications

The pathogenesis of human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1)-associated dementia (HAD) is mediated mainly by mononuclear phagocyte (MP) secretory products and their interactions with neural cells. Viral infection and MP immune activation may affect leukocyte entry into the brain. One factor that influences central nervous system (CNS) monocyte migration is matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs). In the CNS, MMPs are synthesized by resident glial cells and affect the integrity of the neuropil extracellular matrix (ECM). To ascertain how MMPs influence HAD pathogenesis, we studied their secretion following MP differentiation, viral infection, and cellular activation. HIV-1-infected and/or immune-activated monocyte-derived macrophages (MDM) and human …

Survival Of Avian Carcasses And Photographic Evidence Of Predators And Scavengers, Richard M. Kostecke, George M. Linz, William J. Bleier

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Scavenging of carcasses may bias estimates of mortality following the use of pesticides. To assess carcass survival, we monitored bird carcasses in crop stubble, grassland, roadside, and wooded habitats in east-central South Dakota in early spring. Survival rates differed among habitat types in 1997 but not in 1998. Survival rates did not differ among species of carcass in 1997 or 1998. Within 5 d, 66% of carcasses had been scavenged in both 1997 and 1998. To assess potential hazards of secondary poisoning, we used infrared-triggered camera systems to identify predators and scavengers of live birds and bird carcasses. Mammals ( …

Moving Icons, Detection And Distraction, Lyn Bartram, Colin Ware, Tom Calvert

Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping

Simple motion has great potential for visually encoding information but there are as yet few experimentally validated guidelines for its use. Two studies were carried out to look at how efficiently simple motion cues were detected and how distracting they were in different task contexts. The results show that motion outperforms static representations and identify certain types of motions which are more distracting and irritating than others.

Paterson's Curse Management Handbook, Amelia Mclarty, Errol Kruger, Peter Stubbs, John Peirce, Chris Hawkins, Paul Wilson, Simon Merewether

Bulletins 4000 -

Paterson’s curse (Echium plantagineum) is one of the most damaging weeds to the Australian meat and wool industries. It infests an estimated 33 million hectares in southern Australia, at an annual cost to the sheep industry of $250 million in lost pasture productivity, control costs and wool contamination. In WA, it is found on about 5000 agricultural properties infesting some 500,000 ha. It is an extremely invasive weed, that reduces pasture productivity and stock carrying capacity by competing with and excluding more beneficial pasture species. The weed is also toxic to stock. It is important to implement control measures on …
