A Smile And A Handshake Are Not Enough: Moving Toward The Need, Patricia J. Mintz Jul 2001

A Smile And A Handshake Are Not Enough: Moving Toward The Need, Patricia J. Mintz

Student Scholarship

As an undergraduate in 1966, I studied the Fortran and Cobol programming languages on a mainframe computer. At that time, I could not have predicted the personal computer on the desktop. In 1982, we took the plunge and bought an Apple IIe personal computer for use in our home and for the development of my mathematics teaching materials. I was amazed by the power and ability of 64K of memory in that first Apple computer. Over the past eighteen years, the development of powerful personal computers has changed the daily lives of many people in their home and in their …

The Foraging Ecology Of The Juvenile Gopher Tortoise, Gopheruspol Yphemus, Terri Anne Stilson Jul 2001

The Foraging Ecology Of The Juvenile Gopher Tortoise, Gopheruspol Yphemus, Terri Anne Stilson

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Food plant preferences of juvenile gopher tortoises, Gopherus polyphemus, were investigated in a west central Florida population. The juvenile gopher tortoises were free-ranging and were located in a sandhill habitat subject to yearly prescribed burns. Diet was determined by foraging observations, in which the number of bites taken per taxon, the number of plants sampled per taxon, and the amount of each taxon available along the foraging path were recorded. Preference was determined with Manly's alpha index of preference and Jacob's D electivity index. Selected plants in the habitat were analyzed for relative nitrogen content to investigate whether preferred …

Law And The Danger Of Freedom, Steven D. Paulson Jul 2001

Law And The Danger Of Freedom, Steven D. Paulson

Faculty Publications

Proposing a “third use of the law”—a law for Christians after faith—arises from a fear of freedom. It is finally a christological problem, since Christ put an end to the law not only in himself but also in us.

Consumer Perceptions Of Three Food Safety Interventions Related To Meat Processing, Christiane Schroeter, Karen P. Penner, John A. Fox Jul 2001

Consumer Perceptions Of Three Food Safety Interventions Related To Meat Processing, Christiane Schroeter, Karen P. Penner, John A. Fox

Agribusiness

A focus group study with 37 residents of Manhattan, Kansas, was conducted to examine consumers' risk perceptions of foodborne illnesses from eating beef. The four focus-group sessions were designed to determine (1) relative preferences for alternative combinations of public food safety measures (Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points [HACCP], carcass pasteurization, irradiation) and private protection (home preparation of rare, medium, and well-done hamburgers); (2) how who is at risk (children vs. adults) influences preferences; (3) whether consumers would pay a premium for increased product safety arising from the adoption of three different innovations in processing plants; and (4) how to improve …

Classroom Influences On First-Grade Students’ Oral Narratives, Judy A. Abbott, Sarah J. Mccarthey

Faculty Publications

As apart of a longitudinal project examining first-grade reading instruction in 4 districts across the state of Texas, this study explored the nature of students' oral narratives and the connections between teachers' instructional practices and students' narratives. Using an adaptation of Hudson & Shapiro's (1991) narrative categories, we examined 166 narratives generated by firstgrade students, categorizing each as an event-script, a less-developed narrative, a well-developed narrative, or an "other" An exemplar narrative from each of the 4 categories and 2 other narratives that represented the diversity of student responses and the complexity of the relationships between student performance and teacher …

Review Of The Risk Screening Assessment For The Mixed Waste Landfill, Swmu76, Citizen Action (Through New Mexico Community Foundation), Marvin Resnikoff, Ph.D. Jul 2001

Review Of The Risk Screening Assessment For The Mixed Waste Landfill, Swmu76, Citizen Action (Through New Mexico Community Foundation), Marvin Resnikoff, Ph.D.

Citizen Action (through New Mexico Community Foundation)

Citizen Action commissioned Dr. Marvin Resnikoff, Radioactive Waste Management Associates, New York, to review Sandia National Laboratories’ risk assessment for the Mixed Waste Landfill and evaluate whether the objectives identified under the Phase 2 RCRA Facility Investigation to “determine thoroughly the contaminant source, define the nature and extent of contamination, identify potential contaminant transport pathways, evaluate potential risks posed by the levels of contamination identified, and recommend remedial action, if warranted, for the landfill” were satisfied. A copy of Dr. Resnikoff’s curriculum vitae is included with this report.

This research was completed money allocated during Round 2 of the Citizens’ …

Application Of Neuro-Fuzzy Technique+2:9s To Predict Ground Water Vulnerability In Northwest Arkansas, B. Dixon, H. D. Scott, J. V. Brahana, A. Mauromoustakos

Arkansas Water Resources Center Technical Reports

Contamination of ground water has been a major concern in recent years of local, state and federal agencies involved with the management, quality, and quantity of water and their relationships with human health. The Springfield Plateau aquifer, which lies beneath the study area in northwest Arkansas, has been shown to have higher nitrate-N (NO3-N) concentrations than the national median. The dominant landuse (LULC) of this area is agriculture (primarily pasture/cattle and woodlands) and an encroaching urbanization. The major sources of nitrogen in the study area are poultry/cattle wastes, inorganic fertilizers (Peterson et. al., 1998) and septic filter fields. Many of …

Differential Contributions Of The Basolateral And Central Amygdala In The Acquisition And Expression Of Conditioned Relapse To Cocaine-Seeking Behavior, Paul J. Kruzich, Ronald E. See Jul 2001

Differential Contributions Of The Basolateral And Central Amygdala In The Acquisition And Expression Of Conditioned Relapse To Cocaine-Seeking Behavior, Paul J. Kruzich, Ronald E. See

MUSC Faculty Journal Articles

The amygdala is known to be a critical mediator of emotional learning in aversive and appetitive conditioning. Here we show for the first time that distinct subregions of the amygdala play unique roles in the acquisition and expression of cocaineseeking behavior maintained by drug-paired cues in a model of relapse. Reversible inactivation of the basolateral amygdala with the sodium channel blocker tetrodotoxin disrupted both the acquisition and expression of the conditioned reinforcing effects maintained by drug-paired stimuli. However, inactivation of the central amygdala disrupted only the expression, but not the acquisition, of the conditioned reinforcing effects of drug-paired stimuli. Our …
