Land Use, Land Abuse And Land Re-Use: A Framework For The Implementation Of Tmdls For Nonpoint Source Polluted Waterbodies, Paula J. Lebowitz
Land Use, Land Abuse And Land Re-Use: A Framework For The Implementation Of Tmdls For Nonpoint Source Polluted Waterbodies, Paula J. Lebowitz
Pace Environmental Law Review
In July 2000, EPA promulgated new regulations to implement Section 303(d) of the Clean Water Act by requiring states to set Total Maximum Daily Loads (TMDLs) for water bodies that do not meet water quality standards. Primarily, these regulations were meant to address pollution from non-point sources. However, as the result of the settlement of a lawsuit between environmental and agricultural interests and the EPA, the implementation of the regulations was postponed until March 2003. In this comment, the author suggests that the key to implementing TMDLs and to controlling non-point source pollution is through land use management, and further …
The Meaning Of The Phrase ציר המקרש In The Temple Scroll*, Sidnie White Crawford
The Meaning Of The Phrase ציר המקרש In The Temple Scroll*, Sidnie White Crawford
Department of Classics and Religious Studies: Faculty Publications
A minor point of contention in the interpretation of the Temple Scroll has been the meaning of the phrase ציר המקרש [city of the sanctuary] found in the laws concerning the purity of the ideal sanctuary envisioned by the Temple Scroll. This phrase is not a biblical phrase; therefore we cannot fall back on a biblical meaning to help us determine its meaning. The problem is compounded by the fact that the Temple Scroll uses avariety of terms to refer to the Temple building itself, the various buildings and courts which surround it, and the wider area around it; these …
Book Review: Grazing Management, 2nd Ed., Lowell E. Moser
Book Review: Grazing Management, 2nd Ed., Lowell E. Moser
Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications
Grazing management is critical in obtaining optimum production from grasslands and maintaining the grazing resource. Grazing management involves a complex relationship among the herbivores, vegetation, and other biotic and abiotic factors. Proper grazing management of grazing lands has a tremendous importance in agriculture and natural resource conservation because much of the earth’s surface is covered with grazable vegetation. This book is an updated second edition of Grazing Management, which was first published in 1990. This edition is increased in size and coverage compared with the first edition.. A lot of progress in grazing management has been made in the 11 …

The Use Of Landmarks By Clark's Nutcrackers: First Tests Of A New Model, Alan Kamil, Aleida J. Goodyear, Ken Cheng
Papers in Behavior in Biological Sciences
Animals use many different mechanisms to navigate in space. The characteristics of the mechanism employed are usually well-suited to the demands of each particular navigational problem. For example, desert ants navigating in a relatively featureless environment use path integration, birds homing or migrating over long distances use compasses of various sorts, salmon returning to their natal stream home on olfactory cues. The study of navigation requires the study of many different taxa confronting different problems. One interesting case 1 involves scatter-hoarding species that use memory to relocate their hidden food. Such animals face the problem of remembering many locations simultaneously. …

Invited Synthesis Paper: Principles And Practices For Managing Rangeland Invasive Plants, Robert A. Masters, Roger Sheley
Invited Synthesis Paper: Principles And Practices For Managing Rangeland Invasive Plants, Robert A. Masters, Roger Sheley
United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
Invasive plants reduce the capacity of ecosystems to provide goods and services required by society, alter ecological processes, and can displace desirable species. They can reduce wildlife habitat quality, riparian area integrity, rangeland economic value, and enterprise net returns. The invasion process is regulated by characteristics of the invading plant and the community being invaded. The presence and spread of invasive plants is often symptomatic of underlying management problems that must be corrected before acceptable, long-term rangeland improvement can be achieved. Disturbance appears to be important early in the invasion process because it creates vacant niches that alien plants can …

Genotypic Analyses Of Escherichia Coli O157:H7 And O157 Nonmotile Isolates Recovered From Beef Cattle And Carcasses At Processing Plants In The Midwestern States Of The United States, Genevieve A. Barkocy-Gallagher, Terrance M. Arthur, Gregory R. Siragusa, James E. Keen, Robert O. Elder, William Laegreid, Mohammad Koohmaraie
United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
Escherichia coli O157:H7 and O157 nonmotile isolates (E. coli O157) previously were recovered from feces, hides, and carcasses at four large Midwestern beef processing plants (R. O. Elder, J. E. Keen, G. R. Siragusa, G. A. Barkocy-Gallagher, M. Koohmaraie, and W. W. Laegreid, Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. USA 97:2999–3003, 2000). The study implied relationships between cattle infection and carcass contamination within single-source lots as well as between preevisceration and postprocessing carcass contamination, based on prevalence. These relationships now have been verified based on identification of isolates by genomic fingerprinting. E. coli O157 isolates from all positive samples were analyzed …

The Aroid-Scarab Mutualism: Importance Of Floral Temperature For Scarab Attraction And Copulation, September 2001, Lauren Silbert
The Aroid-Scarab Mutualism: Importance Of Floral Temperature For Scarab Attraction And Copulation, September 2001, Lauren Silbert
Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation
Inflorescences of Xanthosoma undipes (Araceae) thermoregulate, heating to temperatures ranging from 36ºC-46°C. Scarab beetles in the genus Cyclocephala spp. (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae), the pollinators of X. undipes, arrive at the inflorescence during heat production and remain for a period of two days, copulating and feeding. In this study I tested the hypothesis that thermogenesis is a mechanism by which to encourage pollinator copulation. Using an experimental design in which beetles were mated under varying temperature conditions to test for an optimal copulating temperature, I expected highest mating frequency to correspond to maximum inflorescence temperature. No correlation was found between temperature and …

Angiotensin Ii And Vegf Are Involved In Angiogenesis Induced By Short-Term Exercise Training, Sandra L. Amaral, Paula E. Papanek, Andrew S. Greene
Exercise Science Faculty Research and Publications
Results from our laboratory have suggested a pathway involving angiotensin II type 1 (AT1) receptors and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) in angiogenesis induced by electrical stimulation. The present study investigated if similar mechanisms underlie the angiogenesis induced by short-term exercise training. Seven days before training and throughout the training period, male Sprague-Dawley rats received either captopril or losartan in their drinking water. Rats underwent a 3-day treadmill training protocol. The tibialis anterior and gastrocnemius muscles were harvested under anesthesia and lightly fixed in formalin (vessel density) or frozen in liquid nitrogen (VEGF expression). In controls, treadmill training …

The Supreme Court's New Federalism: The Authority Of The U.S. Army Corps Of Engineers Does Not Extend Over Isolated Intrastate Wetlands Under The Migratory Bird Rule, Paul Edward Svensson
Pace Environmental Law Review
In Solid Waste of Northern Cook County v. United States Army Corps of Engineers, the Supreme Court found that the Migratory Bird Rule, promulgated by the Army Corps of Engineers, exceeded the authority delegated to the Corps by Congress under the Clean Water Act. In deciding this case on the basis of the plain language of the statute, the Court did not reach the issue of the constitutional limits of federal land use regulation under the authority of the Commerce Clause. This case note reviews that finding and the Court's historical rulings on Congress' exercise of its commerce power. In …

The objective of this study was to develop an X-ray computed tomographic method for measuring pulmonary arterial dimensions and locations within the intact rat lung. Lungs were removed from rats and their pulmonary arterial trees were filled with perfluorooctyl bromide to enhance X-ray absorbance. The lungs were rotated within the cone of the X-ray beam projected from a microfocal X-ray source onto an image intensifier, and 360 images were obtained at 1° increments. The three-dimensional image volumes were reconstructed with isotropic resolution using a cone beam reconstruction algorithm. The vessel diameters were obtained by fitting a functional form to the …
The Theater Of Birth: Scenes From Women's Scripts, Lisa Hanson, Leona Vandevusse, Kathryn Shisler Harrod
The Theater Of Birth: Scenes From Women's Scripts, Lisa Hanson, Leona Vandevusse, Kathryn Shisler Harrod
College of Nursing Faculty Research and Publications
An analogy between theater and birth is drawn from analyses of women's birth stories to describe birth from a fresh perspective. Birth and theater are compared using the theatrical production elements: setting, casting, props, set, behind the scenes, script, and roles. Selected examples from women's birth stories highlight each element. Nurses' roles are significant during labor and birth, but nurses' abilities to fulfill these roles are threatened. This analogy promotes rethinking of nursing actions in the theater of birth. Implications for clinical practice are provided, including altering the birth environment, offering choices, and maintaining the woman's role as star.
Evolutionary Polymorphic Neural Networks In Chemical Engineering Modeling, Li Gao
Evolutionary Polymorphic Neural Networks In Chemical Engineering Modeling, Li Gao
Dissertations
Evolutionary Polymorphic Neural Network (EPNN) is a novel approach to modeling chemical, biochemical and physical processes. This approach has its basis in modern artificial intelligence, especially neural networks and evolutionary computing. EPNN can perform networked symbolic regressions for input-output data, while providing information about both the structure and complexity of a process during its own evolution.
In this work three different processes are modeled: 1. A dynamic neutralization process. 2. An aqueous two-phase system. 3. Reduction of a biodegradation model. In all three cases, EPNN shows better or at least equal performances over published data than traditional thermodynamics /transport or …

Dynamic Friction Of Uhmwpe Angular Compliant Bearing For Joint Implants And Machinery, Max Roman
Dynamic Friction Of Uhmwpe Angular Compliant Bearing For Joint Implants And Machinery, Max Roman
Theses
The feasibility of a unique design of orthopedic- joint implant is investigated. The work focuses on the dynamic friction characteristics of a new joint. This unique design can be also useful in machinery involving oscillating motion similar to that of the hip joint during walking. An elastomeric layer bonded behind the rigid acetubular cup can be beneficial in improving the durability of prosthetic implants. Angular compliance offered by the elastomeric layer reduces relative sliding between the surfaces, lowers contact stresses by distributing pressure more evenly, and reduces the possibility of incongruent loading conditions caused by misalignment. The application of a …

An Historical And Policy Analysis Of The Child Abuse Prevention And Treatment Act (P.L. 93-247) And Amendments With Special Reference To The Crisis Nursery Prevention Model, Lyra L. Peterson
Theses and Graduate Projects
The Child Abuse Prevention and Treatrnent Act of L9l4 (P.L. 93-247) was the federal legislation that included the first definition of child maltreatment and funded both treatment and prevention projects, including crisis nursery demonstration projects.
This social policy and historical analysis examines the legislative policy that was passed by Congress and signed into law by President Nixon (1974). The analysis will include subsequent amendments. This law defines child abuse and sets provisions for reporting, investigating, treating, and preventing child abuse.
This research reveals competition between the provision of treatment and prevention throughout the policy. This competition is driven by two …
