Greenaway's Books, Steven Marx Sep 2001

Greenaway's Books, Steven Marx

English

Peter Greenaway's adaptation of The Tempest is titled Prospero's Books, renaming and representing Shakespeare's play as a work made of books. Prospero begins imagining, speaking and writing The Tempest in his bath while turning the pages of "The Book of Water." It and the other 23 books which inspire and empower him appear in Greenaway's version both as props in the narrative and as "real" documents located in a separate picture plane, where they are described by a donnish voice distinct from that of the protagonist-author.

The Undersea World Of Foreign Relations Federalism, Edward T. Swaine Sep 2001

The Undersea World Of Foreign Relations Federalism, Edward T. Swaine

Chicago Journal of International Law

Long before 'Judge Wapner's Animal Court," commercial television broadcast a nature series perhaps equally relevant to the law-"The Undersea World of Jacques Cousteau." The show was popular because of what it revealed about a world still mysterious to many of us. It also appealed, however, because it managed to maintain that air of mystery-the sense of a truly distinct world that could not be wholly disclosed, a sense conveyed even more plainly in the tites of Cousteau's Oscar- winning documentaries, "Le Monde du Silence" and "Le Monde sans Soleil." This theme undoubtedly owed a great deal to its narrator: more …

Long-Billed Hummingbird Specificity To Long Corolla Flowers, September 2001, Laura Anne Kefauver Sep 2001

Long-Billed Hummingbird Specificity To Long Corolla Flowers, September 2001, Laura Anne Kefauver

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

Long-billed hummingbirds prefer long corolla flowers, although structurally they can readily visit short corollas (Feinsinger 1983; Mayzel 1997). This study examined how facultative long-billed hummingbird preferences are to corolla length as well as the role of interference competition. Red and orange plastic tubes of two sizes (short = 2 cm, long = 4 cm) were attached to the holes of eight hummingbird feeders to mimic short and long corollas. A total of 64 thirty-minute observations were made counting visits to "corollas" of different color and length, species, and competitive interactions were also noted. The color of the corolla did not …

Opilionids: Social Behavior As A Defense Mechanism, September 2001, Scott Rosenthal Sep 2001

Opilionids: Social Behavior As A Defense Mechanism, September 2001, Scott Rosenthal

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

Four environments were created with varying populations of opilionids and experienced hourly mass disturbances to observe if there is a relationship between sex and tibia length in grouping in Monteverde, Costa Rica. The ratio of males to females was five to seven and a significant size difference in tibia among sexes was noticed (T-test male mean = 3.719mm; female mean = 3.382mm, P < 0.0001). Additionally males in groups were significantly larger while females showed no difference (male mean tibia length = 3.678mm (solitary), 3.741mm (group), T-test P = 0.0003; female mean = 3.383mm (solitary), 3.381 mm (group), T-test P = 0.9324). As the amount of disturbance increased, the group size would decrease. Yet the percent of return changed little among varying population sizes. Grouping among opilionids may be used to decrease predation. Their chemical defense will have a stronger effect and they may use individuals as barriers from predators with the competitively superior individuals occupying the center of the group.

Testing The Impact Of Corporate Farming Restrictions On The Nebraska Hog Industry, Holger Matthey, Jeffrey S. Royer Sep 2001

Testing The Impact Of Corporate Farming Restrictions On The Nebraska Hog Industry, Holger Matthey, Jeffrey S. Royer

Department of Agricultural Economics: Presentations, Working Papers, and Gray Literature

This paper evaluates the implications of corporate restrictions on production agriculture using the case of the Nebraska hog industry. Corporate farming restrictions prohibit the acquisition or operation of agricultural land by nonfamily farm or ranch corporations. A partial adjustment model with a variable coefficient of adjustment is used to study the policy change. The results of the study support the hypothesis that the corporate farming restrictions in Nebraska have reduced the Nebraska hog industry’s ability to adjust its inventory to target levels. A significant shift in inventory adjustment behavior is shown to coincide with the enactment of the corporate restrictions.

A Mutation In The Latency-Related Gene Of Bovine Herpesvirus 1 Leads To Impaired Ocular Shedding In Acutely Infected Calves, Melissa Inman, Luciane Lovato, Alan R. Doster, Clinton J. Jones Sep 2001

A Mutation In The Latency-Related Gene Of Bovine Herpesvirus 1 Leads To Impaired Ocular Shedding In Acutely Infected Calves, Melissa Inman, Luciane Lovato, Alan R. Doster, Clinton J. Jones

School of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences: Faculty Publications

Bovine herpesvirus 1 (BHV-1) is an important pathogen of cattle, and infection is usually initiated in the ocular or nasal cavity. Like other alphaherpesviruses, BHV-1 establishes latency in sensory neurons but has the potential of reactivating from latency and spreading. The only abundant viral transcript expressed during latency is the latency-related (LR) RNA, which is alternatively spliced in trigeminal ganglia during acute infection (L. R. Devireddy and C. Jones, J. Virol. 72:7294–7301, 1998). LR gene products inhibit cell cycle progression (Y. Jiang, A. Hossain, M. T. Winkler, T. Holt, A. Doster, and C. Jones, J. Virol. 72:8133–8142, 1998) and chemically …

The Good Food Guide For Sheep : Feeding Sheep For Meat Production In The Areas Of Western Australia, Keith Croker, Peter Watt, Department Of Agriculture And Food, Western Australia Sep 2001

The Good Food Guide For Sheep : Feeding Sheep For Meat Production In The Areas Of Western Australia, Keith Croker, Peter Watt, Department Of Agriculture And Food, Western Australia

Bulletins 4000 -

The Good Food Guide for Sheep has been produced to provide Western Australian farmers with a concise compilation of current information on feeding sheep for meat production. Although there are already numerous publications about sheep nutrition, many of them relate to wool production, reproduction or drought feeding, or they concentrate on particular feeds or feeding systems.

This book contains information on a wide range of feeds and feeding methods. Just as there is no single ‘best’ sheep breed for meat production, there is no ultimate feed regime for sheep for growth.

The Arithmetic Of Arsenic, Cass R. Sunstein Sep 2001

The Arithmetic Of Arsenic, Cass R. Sunstein

Coase-Sandor Institute for Law & Economics Research Paper Series

What does cost-benefit mean, or do, in actual practice? When agencies are engaging in cost-benefit balancing, what are the interactions among law, science, and economics? This Article attempts to answer that question by exploring, in some detail, the controversy over EPA’s proposed regulation of arsenic in drinking water. The largest finding is that science often can produce only “benefit ranges,” and wide ones at that. With reasonable assumptions based on the existing science data, the proposed arsenic regulation can be projected to save as few as 0 lives and as many as 112. With reasonable assumptions, the monetized benefits of …

Eicosanoids Act In Nodulation Reactions To Bacterial Infections In Newly Emerged Adult Honey Bees, Apis Mellifera, But Not In Older Foragers, Jon C. Bedick, Hasan Tunaz, A. R. Nor Aliza, Sean Putnam, Marion D. Ellis, David W. Stanley Sep 2001

Eicosanoids Act In Nodulation Reactions To Bacterial Infections In Newly Emerged Adult Honey Bees, Apis Mellifera, But Not In Older Foragers, Jon C. Bedick, Hasan Tunaz, A. R. Nor Aliza, Sean Putnam, Marion D. Ellis, David W. Stanley

Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications

Nodulation is the first, and qualitatively predominant, cellular defense reaction to bacterial infections in insects. We tested the hypothesis that eicosanoids also mediate nodulation reactions to bacterial challenge in adults of a social insect, the honey bee, Apis mellifera. Treating newly-emerged experimental bees with the eicosanoid biosynthesis inhibitor, dexamethasone, impaired nodulation reactions to bacterial infections, and the influence of dexamethasone was reversed by treating infected insects with arachidonic acid, an eicosanoid precursor. Several other eicosanoid biosynthesis inhibitors, including the cyclooxygenase inhibitor, indomethacin, and the dual cyclooxygenase/lipoxygenase inhibitor, phenidone, also impaired the ability of experimental honeybees to form nodules in …

The Effects Of Habitat Structural Complexity On Bird Species Richness And Composition, September 2001, Alison Jane Duff Sep 2001

The Effects Of Habitat Structural Complexity On Bird Species Richness And Composition, September 2001, Alison Jane Duff

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

With the increasing rate of human activities in tropical regions, it is imperative that we understand the effects of habitat change on biodiversity, and develop appropriate conservation methods. A general trend of increasing bird species richness with increasing habitat structural complexity has been observed by a number of ecologists. The purpose of this study was to test whether this relationship holds for cloud forest bird communities in structurally complex primary forest as compared with simpler secondary forestdominated by Conostegia oerstediana (Melastomataceae). I predicted a strong positive correlation between bird species richness and habitat structural complexity, and bird species compositional differences …

A Medicinal Plant Analysis In Premontane Wet/Moist And Premontane Wet Life Zones In Monteverde, Costa Rica, September 2001, Ryan Pjesky Sep 2001

A Medicinal Plant Analysis In Premontane Wet/Moist And Premontane Wet Life Zones In Monteverde, Costa Rica, September 2001, Ryan Pjesky

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

This study was completed in Monteverde, Costa Rica on the diversity of medicinal plants in: premontane wet/moist and premontane wet forest. The purpose of this study was to find overall plant diversity and medicinal plant diversity within these two forests. After finding medicinal plant diversity, a conservation value could then be applied for each life zone accordingly. This was done by surveying three, 10-meter square plots in both life zones. It was hypothesized that plant diversities would be different within the two life zones. This hypothesis was not supported: the two plant communities had similar richness (S), diversity (H'), and …

Opportunistic Vibrios In Cultured Taiwanese Soft-Shelled Turtles (Pelodiscus Sinensis), Channarong Rodkhum, Jaennuj Wongtavatchai, Win Surachetpong, Olarn Tonweerapongsiri, Suparp Kumlungpeat, Jirasak Tangtrongpiros

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

One hundred clinically healthy Taiwanease soft-shelled turtles (Pelodiscus sinensis) were sampled by blood sampling and cloacal swabing. Samples were first cultured in a pre-enrichment media and then selective isolation was performed for vibrios on Thiosulfate-Citrate-Bile salts-Sucrose agar (TCBS). Species of the isolated vibrios were identified by standard biochemical procedures. A total of 146 vibrio isolates were found in 83 out of 100 cloacal swabs (83%), whereas none were found in the 50 blood samples. Isolates were identified as Vibrio fluvialis (26.04%), V. anguillarum (21.23%), V. furnissii (18.49%), V. parahaemolyticus (18.49%), Vibrio spp. (6.85%), V. damsela (5.48%) and V. metschnikovii (3.42%). …

The Measurement Of Swamp Buffalo (Bubalus Bubalis) Arterial Blood Pressure By The Steven Hales Method, Ayus Pichaicharnarong, Prapa Loypetjra, Narongsak Chaiyabutr, Atichart Brahmasa, Chollada Buranakarl, Kalaya Youngsukying, Trakan Tasungka

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

Two yearling swamp buffalo (Bubalus bubalis) calves, one male and one female, were used for measuring their carotid blood pressure by the classic Stephen Hales method. The animals were premedicated with xylazine hydrochloride followed by intravenous guaifenesin-thiopental. The systolic blood pressure in the male calf was 145.7 mmHg, while the Statham transducer showed 150 mmHg. The pressure in the female calf was 136.2 mmHg and 140 mmHg by the Stephen Hales and electronic methods, respectively.
