Exploring Alternative Conceptions In Our Environmental Education Classroom, Gayle A. Buck, Patricia Meduna Sep 2001

Exploring Alternative Conceptions In Our Environmental Education Classroom, Gayle A. Buck, Patricia Meduna

Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications

Teaching is an inexact science. Even experienced teachers have difficulty assessing the effectiveness of their lessons and students mastery of concept. Teachers must be particularly careful to avoid introducing or reinforcing student misconceptions. The following describes how we scrutinized and modified our own environmental education teaching practices to ensure that our students were learning what we were teaching. Our inquiry into students’ alternative conceptions about the environment was a very enlightening experience for both of us. Th e process revealed some beliefs that surprised us. However, the real surprise came when we realized that our own lessons reinforced (and sometimes …

Does The Producer Have An Incentive To Sell Fed Cattle On A Grid?, Scott Fausti, Bashir Qasmi Sep 2001

Does The Producer Have An Incentive To Sell Fed Cattle On A Grid?, Scott Fausti, Bashir Qasmi

Economics Staff Paper Series (1969 - 2017)

Barriers to the adoption of grid pricing by fed cattle producers are investigated over a 206-week period (Jan. 1997 to Dec. 2000). The empirical findings document: I) when fed cattle are evaluated on a grid pricing system versus a dressed weight pricing system, a price differential per cwt. and a per-head revenue differential exists over time, 2) the price differential per cwt. is subject to seasonal variation which contributes to inconsistent price signals transmitted to producers concerning the market value of carcass characteristics over time; 3) grid revenue per-head variability is consistently higher than dressed weight revenue per-head variability over …

Nutrients In Runoff Following The Application Of Swine Manure To Interrill Areas, John E. Gilley, Bahman Eghball, B. J. Weinhold, Phillip S. Miller Sep 2001

Nutrients In Runoff Following The Application Of Swine Manure To Interrill Areas, John E. Gilley, Bahman Eghball, B. J. Weinhold, Phillip S. Miller

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications

The P content of swine manure can be reduced through the addition of feed supplements or the use of selected corn hybrids. This study was conducted to compare interrill runoff losses of P and N from three soils following the application of swine manure obtained from selected diets. The soils used in this investigation included a Hersh sandy loam, Pierre silty clay, and Sharpsburg silt loam. Simulated rainfall was applied during both initial and wet runs to a soil pan on which swine manure produced from low phytate corn (LPC), phytase added to the diet (PHY), or a traditional corn …

Analaysis Of Long-Eared Owl (Asio Otus) Pellets From Eastern Nebraska, Rachel D. Mahan, Emily C. Mahan, Brandon D. Sachtleben

Nebraska Bird Review

A common way to determine the food habits of an owl is to analyze prey remains found within regurgitated pellets, called "owl pellets." We collected and analyzed owl pellets found under a Long-eared Owl (Asio otus) roost in eastern Nebraska as part of two grade school science fair projects. The results are presented here to add to the knowledge about the food habits of this species in Nebraska.

A Bird On The Shoreline, Shelly Clark Sep 2001

A Bird On The Shoreline, Shelly Clark

Nebraska Bird Review

A Bird on the Shoreline

My daughter tells me she doesn't believe in God.

Her words pour onto the supper table like milk spilling.

In measured silence

she waits for what I will say.

The evening news mumbles in the background,

dog scratching at the door.

I look out the window to September sky opening

its dark blue skirt of night. I tell her

the Piping plovers will be leaving soon, if they haven't already.

Asking her, do you remember the first time we saw them through binoculars,

on the broad sandbar new McConaughy?

You were eight or nine.

How …

Small Carrion Beetles (Coleoptera: Leiodidae: Cholevinae) From Burrows Of Geomys And Thomomys Pocket Gophers (Rodentia: Geomyidae) In The United States, Stewart B. Peck, Paul E. Skelley Sep 2001

Small Carrion Beetles (Coleoptera: Leiodidae: Cholevinae) From Burrows Of Geomys And Thomomys Pocket Gophers (Rodentia: Geomyidae) In The United States, Stewart B. Peck, Paul E. Skelley

Insecta Mundi

The cholevine beetles inhabiting burrows of Geomys and Thomomys pocket gophers (Rodentia: Geomyidae) are reviewed. Catops geomysi n. sp. and Ptomaphagus geomysi n. sp. are described. Both of these species and Ptomaphagus schwarzi Hatch appear to be regular and obligate inhabitants of Geomys burrows but are not host specific. Nemadus hornii Hatch, Sciodrepoides ruatsoni hornianus (Blanchard), Catops simplex Say, Ptomaphagus cavernicola Schwarz, Ptomaphagus consobrinus (LeConte), Ptomaphagus fisus Horn, and Ptomaphagus texanus Horn were less frequently collected and are probably facultative inhabitants of Geomys burrows, as well as nests or dens of other small mammals. Ptomaphagus nevadicus Horn is an inhabitant …

Faunal Changes In Bromeliad Tank Communities As A Result Of Throughfall Ph Changes, September 2001, Clay Buchanan Sep 2001

Faunal Changes In Bromeliad Tank Communities As A Result Of Throughfall Ph Changes, September 2001, Clay Buchanan

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

Throughfall in forests is known to increase pH as a result of many neutralizing components on the tree. The purpose of this study was to examine how the change in pH due to Throughfall, affected the faunal composition in bromeliad tank communities. A total of 46 bromeliad tanks were sampled, which contained 2300 protists in 18 morphospecies. No significant correlation was found between pH and height on the tree or pH and volume of the tank sample. A decrease in diversity was noticed with the increase in volume of water in the tanks corresponding to heavy rainfall caused by hurricane …

Strike One—You’Re Out! Wildlife Services Helps Reduce Wildlife Conflicts At Airports

Other Bird Strike and Aviation Materials

Collisions between aircraft and wildlife at airports have risen dramatically in recent years as a result of large population increases in many wildlife species, faster airplanes, and the increase in air transportation traffic. Every year between 1991 and 1997, wildlife strikes cost U.S. civil aviation more than $300 million and 500,000 hours of aircraft downtime. About 2,400 bird strikes to civil aircraft are reported each year, and more than 2,500 are reported by the U.S. Air Force. Since 1990, more than 300 deer collisions with aircraft have been reported to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

The Allocation Of The Commons: Parking And Stopping On The Commons, Richard A. Epstein Sep 2001

The Allocation Of The Commons: Parking And Stopping On The Commons, Richard A. Epstein

Coase-Sandor Institute for Law & Economics Research Paper Series

The economic forces governing transitions between different property rights regimes has been the source of extensive study since Demsetz's path breaking 1967 essay, "Toward a Theory of Property Rights." This paper offers first a general critique of that position, chiefly on the ground that it underestimates the practical difficulties of orchestrating efficient transitions in contexts where strong political forces are at play. Thereafter, the paper explores the movement among various systems that are used to allocate a particular public good, namely parking places on public streets. It examines both bottom-up systems that rely on analogues to the rule of first …
