Agricultural Exports To China: Time For A Reality Check?, William Scheideler Sep 2001

Agricultural Exports To China: Time For A Reality Check?, William Scheideler

Business in Nebraska

Many believe that China's admission to the World Trade Organization (WTO) early next year will boost export opportunities for Midwestern agriculture. Analysts at the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) expect China's WTO membership to add $2 billion to the U.S. $50 billion agricultural export market by boosting exports ofgrain, oilseeds and oilseed products. and cotton by 2005.

Since 1995 when an eye-opening forecast predicted China would need 200 million metric tons (MMT) of imported grain annually by the year 2015, Midwest farmers have looked forward to helping feed China. Others have observed that China supports 22 percentoftheworld's population on just …

Infrared Spectroscopy Of H-Bonded Bridges Stretched Across The Cis-Amide Group: Ii. Ammonia And Mixed Ammonia/Water Bridges, A. V. Fedorov, John R. Cable, Joel R. Carney, Timothy S. Zwier

Chemistry Faculty Publications

Clusters of two model cis amides, oxindole and 3,4-dihydro-2(IH)-quinolinone, containing one and two ammonia molecules have been studied in the IR hydride stretch region using resonant ion-dip IR spectroscopy. The spectra confirm that ammonia is able to form hydrogen-bonded bridges across the adjacent amide N-H and C=O sites in a manner very similar to that of water. Such bridged structures require that ammonia assume the role of a hydrogen bond donor. Further similarities of the hydrogen bonding capabilities of ammonia and water have been revealed by investigations of ternary clusters containing an amide, one ammonia, and one water molecule. Experimentally, …

Free Trade, Sovereignty, Democracy: The Future Of The World Trade Organization, Claude E. Barfield

Chicago Journal of International Law

The World Trade Organization ("WTO"), only six years old, faces two formidable challenges. First, it must mobilize support to confront determined and growing attacks from outside groups and individuals who proclaim that the organization lacks democratic accountability and is merely a front for multinational corporations and dehumanizing capitalist values. Second, even as it attempts to mobilize its resources to meet these onslaughts, the WTO finds its own institutional viability jeopardized by internal constitutional flaws that play into the hands of opponents: namely, the pressure to "legislate" new rules-through a highly efficient new dispute settlement system-that flout the mandate that dispute …

Site-Dependent Differences In Artificial Reef Function: Implications For Coral Reef Restoration, Robin L. Sherman, David S. Gilliam, Richard E. Spieler

Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles

There is an increasing use of artificial structure in coral reef restoration (for references, see Spieler et al., this volume). Often artificial reef structures are chosen for a restoration project simply because they were used elsewhere. However, it is questionable whether the results obtained at one restoration site can be extrapolated to another. In recent years, several studies have examined the effect of artificial reef site selection on formation of associated fish, algae, and/or invertebrate assemblages (Alevizon et al., 1985; Blinova et al., 1994; Bombace et al., 1994; Caley and St. John, 1996; Chang, 1985; Haughton and Aiken, 1989; Hixon …

Artificial Substrate And Coral Reef Restoration: What Do We Need To Know To Know What We Need, Richard E. Spieler, David S. Gilliam, Robin L. Sherman

Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles

To use artificial substrate effectively in coral reef restoration certain basic knowledge is required: (1) what is the artificial substrate expected to accomplish relative to the goals of the restoration effort and (2) what are the expected interactions of the selected substrate’s composition, texture, orientation, and design with the damaged environment and the biota of interest. Whereas the first point is usually clear, at least in general terms, the second is not. In this review, we examine: the functions of artificial substrate in restoration and some of the physical (i.e., composition; surface texture; color and chemistry; and design in terms …
