A >130,000-Year-Long Pollen Record From Pittsburg Basin, Illinois, Rebecca Teed Sep 2000

A >130,000-Year-Long Pollen Record From Pittsburg Basin, Illinois, Rebecca Teed

Earth and Environmental Sciences Faculty Publications

Pittsburg Basin, in south-central Illinois, contains a sediment record extending from the present back to the end of the late Illinoian glaciation, when central Illinois was covered with Picea/Pinus forest. During the last interglaciation, a temperate deciduous forest more diverse than Holocene Quercus/Carya forest replaced the Illinoian late-glacial boreal forest. Prairie pollen types and the charcoal/pollen ratio, indicating fire frequency, temporarily increased. Then forest, with high Juniperus percentages, became dominant once more, as the charcoal/pollen ratio dropped. After the last interglaciation, the charcoal/pollen ratio increased again and prairie and wetland surrounded Pittsburg Basin through the entire Wisconsinan glacial age. The …

Beyond The Red Pen: Clarifying Our Role In The Response Process, Bryan Bardine, Molly Schmitz Bardine, Elizabeth F. Deegan

English Faculty Publications

Describes two research studies with high school teachers and students that examine various aspects of both students' and teachers' perspectives on teacher responses to student writing. Examines how well teachers put their own theory about writing instruction into practice with their response style; analyzes teacher comments and students' understanding of them; and offers the teachers' responses to the studies.

Strain And Strain Relief In Gd(0001) Films On Mo(112), Takashi Komesu, C. Waldfried, Peter A. Dowben Sep 2000

Strain And Strain Relief In Gd(0001) Films On Mo(112), Takashi Komesu, C. Waldfried, Peter A. Dowben

Peter Dowben Publications

The electronic structure of strained and unstrained Gd(0001) has been studied with spin-polarized photoemission spectroscopy and spin-polarized inverse photoemission spectroscopy. In this work, we observed that relaxation of the expansively strained in-plane crystal lattice constant, of Gd(0001) on Mo(112), significantly diminishes the differences in the electronic structure from that observed for Gd(0001) grown on W(110). The defects that are incorporated in the Gd films, with increasing film thickness, lead to an in-plane lattice relaxation. Such thickness dependent strain relief results a loss of net polarization for Gd(0001) grown on Mo(112) compared to the relatively unstrained Gd(0001) films grown on W(110).

Dielectric Tensor For Interfaces And Individual Layers In Magnetic Multilayer Structures, Xiang Gao, Michael J. Devries, Daniel W. Thompson, John A. Woollam Sep 2000

Dielectric Tensor For Interfaces And Individual Layers In Magnetic Multilayer Structures, Xiang Gao, Michael J. Devries, Daniel W. Thompson, John A. Woollam

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications

The magneto-optical Kerr response of metallic magnetic multilayers has been studied by determining the dielectric tensors (dielectric functions) for individual layers, including the magnetic and nonmagnetic interfacial layers. The diagonal components of these tensors were determined using in situ ellipsometric analysis, where the ellipsometric data were taken in real time during multilayer deposition. The off-diagonal components were determined by regression fitting magneto-optic polar Kerr rotation and ellipticity data to models supported by electromagnetic theory. The Voigt parameters (ratio between off-diagonal and diagonal components of dielectric tensors) were determined from these model fits. Higher magnitudes for the Voigt parameters were found …

Nebraska's Employment Growth Slows, John Austin, Nebraska Business Forest Council Sep 2000

Nebraska's Employment Growth Slows, John Austin, Nebraska Business Forest Council

Business in Nebraska

Despite the robust national economy, Nebraska's economy has started an employment growth slowdown.1 The slowdown is the result of tight labor markets across the state and the impact of a continuing decline in the agricultural sector.

The current situation is not unusual. Past studies indicate that, with the possible exception of durables manufacturing, Nebraska's business cycle has little relation to the national business cycle. In contrast, there is a strong tie between the state's overall economic cycle and its agricultural cycle. It is not a case of agriculture dominating the state's economy, but that losses in agriculture will take …
