Verruciform Xanthoma, Kittipong Dhanuthai
Verruciform Xanthoma, Kittipong Dhanuthai
Chulalongkorn University Dental Journal
Verruciform xanthoma is a rare, benign entity which preferentially affects the oral mucosa than any other tissue. The most frequent site of involvement is the gingiva. It affects mostly the middleaged person with a predilection for male gender. Clinically, verruciform xanthoma appears as papillary or verrucous, flat or slightly raised lesions. Aggregates of lipid-laden foam cells confined to the connective tissue papillae between epithelial rete ridges in association with papillary or verrucous epithelial hyperplasia are the histolopathologic hallmark of this lesion. These foam cells are actually of macrophage/monocyte lineage. The histopathological distinction of verruciform xanthoma from other lesions, which it …

Giant Cell Fibroma Of The Oral Cavity. Ii. An Immunohistochemical Study, Somporn Swasdison, Kittipong Dhanuthai
Chulalongkorn University Dental Journal
Objective The purpose of this study was to investigate the phenotype of the mononuclear and the multinucleated cells in the oral giant cell fibroma. Materials and methods The study was performed in thirty-one cases of the oral giant cell fibroma. The surgical specimens of the lesions were stained with a panel of antibodies using indirect immunoperoxidase technique. Results The mononuclear and multinucleated giant cells of the giant cell fibroma showed positive staining by antibodies against vimentin and proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) while demonstrating negative staining by antibodies against S-100 antigen, leukocyte common antigen (LCA), macrophage marker (LNS), smooth muscle …

Carotid Cavernous Sinus Fistula: A Literature Review, Poramate Pitak-Arnnop
Chulalongkorn University Dental Journal
Carotid cavernous sinus fistula is an uncommon complication of craniocervical trauma which is usually associated with a skull base, frontal or midface fractures; besides it may also be a spontaneous phenomenon of a congenital, degenerative or iatrogenic origin. The blood shunts from either internal or external carotid arteries to the cavernous sinus resulting the blurred vision, ophthalmoparesis, pulsating exophthalmos, glaucoma, ocular ischemic syndrome, orbital headache and periorbital pain. The diagnosis is made by clinical features and radiography for differentiating from superior orbital fissure syndrome, orbital apex syndrome, retrobulbar hematoma and cavernous sinus thrombosis. In unspontaneous closure cases with progressive findings, …

Moving Microenterprises Beyond A Subsistence Plateau, Beth C. Haynes, Kristie K. Seawright, William C. Giauque
Journal of Microfinance / ESR Review
Enthusiasm for microcredit programs has increased during the past decade. The attention these programs have drawn stems philosophically from progress in cultivating self-sufficiency among those in abject poverty, and practically from the viability and high loan repayment rates of many microfinance institutions. The programs assume that lack of capital is the main barrier to the economic progress of the poor. The lack of entrepreneur business management experience and training, however, may create a barrier equally powerful and limit the growth potential of microenterprises. Microcredit programs could foster even greater economic progress by ensuring that clients receive appropriate human capital development. …

Microfinance In The United States: The Working Capital Experience— Ten Years Of Lending And Learning, Jeffrey Ashe
Microfinance In The United States: The Working Capital Experience— Ten Years Of Lending And Learning, Jeffrey Ashe
Journal of Microfinance / ESR Review
Working Capital is the United States' largest peer-group lending program. This article reviews what Working Capital has learned about the market, its customers, program impact, and service delivery over its ten year history. It presents a model for understanding how participating in peer lending groups develops “social and economic capital” in poor communities. The article then discusses how participants judge the group model as they identify the characteristics of successful groups and the impact of the group on their businesses, on themselves personally, and on the larger community. The rest of the article discusses how Working Capital evolved from a …
Capital Enhancement Guarantees And Risk Management By Capital-Constrained Lenders, J.D. Von-Pischke
Capital Enhancement Guarantees And Risk Management By Capital-Constrained Lenders, J.D. Von-Pischke
Journal of Microfinance / ESR Review
Commercial lenders require capital to bear risk. The capital enhancement guarantee (CEG) encourages lenders to make loans they would not otherwise make, such as microenterprise loans. The CEG is auctioned and awarded to bidders who promise the greatest amount of new lending for a given increment of permanent capital. Whether the incremental lending causes losses or gains for the lender, the incremental capital is free. The CEG subsidizes innovation in risk management. It places the analytical focus on risk and its cost, supports the key party to the lending decision, promotes skill in managing risk, is transparent, minimizes moral hazard, …

Ouabain Interaction With Cardiac Na+/K+-Atpase Initiates Signal Cascades Independent Of Changes In Intracellular Na+ And Ca2+, Jiang Liu, Jiang Tian, Michael Haas, Joseph I. Shapiro, Amir Askari, Zijian Xie
Pharmaceutical Science and Research
We have shown previously that partial inhibition of the cardiac myocyte Na+/K+-ATPase activates signal pathways that regulate myocyte growth and growth-related genes and that increases in intracellular Ca2+ concentration ([Ca2+]i) and reactive oxygen species (ROS) are two essential second messengers within these pathways. The aim of this work was to explore the relation between [Ca2+]i and ROS. When myocytes were in a Ca2+-free medium, ouabain caused no change in [Ca2+]i, but it increased ROS as it did when the cells were in …
