Impact Assessment Of Microfinance And Organizational Learning: Who Will Survive?, James G. Copestake Sep 2000

Impact Assessment Of Microfinance And Organizational Learning: Who Will Survive?, James G. Copestake

Journal of Microfinance / ESR Review

To what extent is it possible for organizations to reflect honestly on their own performance, draw appropriate conclusions, and then act on them? For many microfinance organizations this is now a question of survival. This paper argues that formal impact assessment can assist in the transition from donor-controlled replication projects to autonomous and adaptable organizations--but it often fails to do so. Pitfalls include inadequate attention to methodological detail and to the links between impact assessment and wider aspects of organizational change. The paper starts by highlighting the complexity of the overall task to which impact assessment is expected to contribute. …

Distant Smiles: Painting Of Yishai Jusidman, Ken Gonzales-Day Sep 2000

Distant Smiles: Painting Of Yishai Jusidman, Ken Gonzales-Day

Scripps Faculty Publications and Research

Jusidman's eclectic mix of imagery spans everything from geisha and clowns to nameless psychiatric patients in Mexico City. Part of his ongoing exploration of the interrelationship between "distance" and "presence," his work explores the in-between spaces that separate objects from their representations, For Jusidman, this discrepancy "constitutes the soul of painting." It could be said that he uses paint the way others use language. His command of the grammar of painting and the vocabulary of its technique allows him to work beyond a singular style. (As might be expected, many are seduced by Jusidman's Virtuosity, as an artist but also …

Spatial And Temporal Changes In Land Use And Land Cover From 1988 To 1992 In The Upper White River Watershed, H. D. Scott, J. M. Mckimmey

Arkansas Water Resources Center Technical Reports

Changes in Land Use and Land Cover (LULC) in the upper White River Watershed from 1988 to 1992 were analyzed and plotted using the geographic information system known as Geographic Resources Analyses Support System (GRASS). This portion of the White River Watershed includes two sub-basins the East Fork and the Middle Fork. In addition, LULC changes were determined for two smaller sub-basins, Shumate Creek and Cannon Creek, located in the East Fork of the White River. Copyrights And Beyond In The Digital Age, Thomas G. Field Jr. Sep 2000

Copyrights And Beyond In The Digital Age, Thomas G. Field Jr.

Law Faculty Scholarship

At one time, only works visible to the naked eye were copyrightable, but that has long since changed. Now, works capable of perception only by use of VCRs or computers, for example, enjoy the same protection as books, paintings and sculpture. In 1994, William S. Strong reported that he had "heard Chicken Littles say that the sky is falling in on copyright owners" in the digital age and predicted to the contrary. He was right; publishers' problems may have changed in degree but not in kind. For important, if not critical, internet needs to be met, providers must recoup costs.
