Constitutional Approaches To Privatization: An Inquiry Into The Magnitude Of Neo-Liberal Constitutionalism, David Schneiderman Oct 2000

Constitutional Approaches To Privatization: An Inquiry Into The Magnitude Of Neo-Liberal Constitutionalism, David Schneiderman

Law and Contemporary Problems

Schneiderman discusses whether constitutional rules in the state capitalist mode that redistribute property ownership more widely can survive the pressures generated by the neo-liberal model of constitutionalism. Schneiderman considers privatization programs that concern the divestiture of state assets, or denationalization through the sale of shares or assets to employees and employee associations.

Taxing The Market Citizen: Fiscal Policy And Inequality In An Age Of Privatization, Lisa Philipps Oct 2000

Taxing The Market Citizen: Fiscal Policy And Inequality In An Age Of Privatization, Lisa Philipps

Law and Contemporary Problems

Focusing on Canada, Philipps argues that recent efforts to revise important facets of the income tax system are best understood through the lens of privatization. By promoting personal responsibility, the tax code is contributing to the erosion of the ideal of social citizenship and replacing it with a new model of market citizenship.

Liberalization And Democratization: The Forum And The Hearth In The Era Of Cosmopolitan Post-Industrial Capitalism, Sol Picciotto Oct 2000

Liberalization And Democratization: The Forum And The Hearth In The Era Of Cosmopolitan Post-Industrial Capitalism, Sol Picciotto

Law and Contemporary Problems

Rather than the desire for economic liberalization bringing about political democratization, the struggles against autocracy have created an opening for economic liberalization. While undermining partriarchy and hierarchy, anti-authoritarian movements have also paved the way for post-industrial capitalism, with its emphasis on information management, flexible working conditions, and a global outlook.

The 2000 Presidential Election In Louisiana, Susan E. Howell Oct 2000

The 2000 Presidential Election In Louisiana, Susan E. Howell

Survey Research Center Publications

The University of New Orleans Survey Research Center interviewed 658 registered voters by telephone between October 15 and 22. Results are reported for both the complete cross-section of registered voters and for the subset of likely voters, identified by the Gallup likely voter scale, which asks seven questions about voting habits. Regardless of whether you consider likely voters or all registered voters, George W. Bush enjoys a comfortable lead in Louisiana as of October 22. The margin is largely based on the 40% lead he has among white voters, who comprise over 70% of the electorate. Predictably, black voters overwhelmingly …

Book Review: Jean De Sponde, Méditations Sur Les Pseaumes. Édition Critique Par Sabine Lardon., Russell J. Ganim Oct 2000

Book Review: Jean De Sponde, Méditations Sur Les Pseaumes. Édition Critique Par Sabine Lardon., Russell J. Ganim

Department of Modern Languages and Literatures: Faculty Publications

This edition of the Méditations is a noteworthy project that will prove a valuable research tool. Part of Lardon’s suc¬cess stems from the fact that she preserves the integrity of the original 1588 La Rochelle edition by making only the slight¬est and most obvious changes in orthography and punctua¬tion for purposes of enhanced readability. The volume is more remarkable, however, for the ways in which it goes beyond Alan Boase’s 1954 and 1978 editions of the Médita¬tions.

Book Review: Sabine Lardon. L’Écriture De La Méditation Chez Jean De Sponde., Russell J. Ganim

Department of Modern Languages and Literatures: Faculty Publications

Sabine Lardon’s monograph commands attention for the precision with which it analyses Sponde’s rhetorical tech¬nique in his Méditations sur les Pseaumes. Basing the need for her book on the critics’ preference for writing about Sponde’s lyric offerings rather than his prose, Lardon pro¬duces a study that yields great insight into Sponde’s ad¬ap¬tation of language and form within the context of bibli¬cal exegesis. Lardon’s work makes a valuable contribution to Spondian studies, and will no doubt help renew interest in baroque devotional literature.

Magnetic Properties Of Ni Nanowires In Self-Assembled Arrays, M. Zheng, L. Menon, H. Zeng, Yi Liu, Supriyo Bandyopadhyay, Roger D. Kirby, David J. Sellmyer Oct 2000

Magnetic Properties Of Ni Nanowires In Self-Assembled Arrays, M. Zheng, L. Menon, H. Zeng, Yi Liu, Supriyo Bandyopadhyay, Roger D. Kirby, David J. Sellmyer

Department of Physics and Astronomy: Faculty Publications

Magnetic properties of Ni nanowires electrodeposited into self-assembled porous alumina arrays have been investigated. By anodizing aluminum in sulfuric acid and immersing the as-anodized template into phosphoric acid for different lengths of time, we are able to vary the diameters of the subsequently deposited nanowires between 8 and 25 nm. The coercivity measured along wire axis first increases with the wire diameter, reaches a maximum of 950 Oe near a diameter of 18 nm, and then decreases with further increase of wire diameter. The dependence of the magnetization of Ni nanowires is found to follow Bloch’s law at low temperature …

Two Large-Insert Soybean Genomic Libraries Constructed In A Binary Vector: Applications In Chromosome Walking And Genome Wide Physical Mapping, K. Meksem, K. Zobrist, E. Ruben, D. L. Hyten, T. Quanzhou, H-B. Zhang, D. A. Lightfoot

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

Large DNA insert libraries in binary T-DNA vectors can assist in the isolation of the gene(s) under-lying a quantitative trait locus (QTL). Binary vectors facilitate the transfer of large-insert DNA fragments containing a QTL from E. coli to Agrobacterium sp. and then to plants. We constructed two soybean large-insert libraries from cv. Forrest in the pCLD04541 (V41) binary vector after partial digestion of genomic high-molecular-weight DNA with BamHI or HindIII. The libraries contain 76,800 clones with an average insert size of 125 kb, and therefore represent 9.5-fold haploid genome equivalents. Colony hybridization using a chloroplast-specific probe infers that …

Superspin Glass Behaviour Of Interacting Ferromagnetic Nanoparticles In Discontinuous Magnetic Multilayers, Christian Binek Oct 2000

Superspin Glass Behaviour Of Interacting Ferromagnetic Nanoparticles In Discontinuous Magnetic Multilayers, Christian Binek

Christian Binek Publications

Discontinuous magnetic multilayers [Co80Fe20(t)/Al2O3(3nm)]10 with t = 0.9 and 1.0nm are studied by SQUID magnetometry and ac susceptibility. Owing to dipolar interaction the superparamagnetic cluster systems undergo collective glass-like freezing upon cooling. While both samples exhibit very similar glass temperatures Tg » 45 K and critical exponents zn » 10 and g » 1.4 as obtained from the temperature dependencies of the relaxation time, t, and the nonlinear susceptibility, c3, dynamical scaling reveals different critical exponents, b(0.9nm) »1.0 and b(1.0nm) » 0.6, respectively.

All published data on benign prostatic hyperplasia in Saudi Arabia was reviewed. The age of presentation of the benign prostatic hyperplasia Saudi patient is between 60 and 70 years. Until the introduction of medical therapy for benign prostatic hyperplasia, presentation by complication was common, mainly by retention of urine in 40-50% of the cases. Diagnostic modalities are improving and both biochemical and imaging techniques are now available. Medical therapy for benign prostatic hyperplasia is widely used but studies on only 2 alpha adrenergic blocking agents out the 5 pharmacological preparations currently in the field were reported. Those are Prazosin and …

Female Circumcision Oct 2000

Female Circumcision

Saudi Medical Journal

It is uncertain when female circumcision was first practiced, but it certainly preceded the founding of both Christianity and Islam. A review of past and current historical, popular and professional literature was undertaken, and 4 types of female circumcision were identified. Typically female circumcision is performed by a local village practitioner, lay person or by untrained midwives. Female genital mutilation is not accepted by any religious or medical opinion, and is a violation of human rights against helpless individuals who are unable to provide informed consent and who must therefore be protected through education and legislation. Complications of female circumcision …

Saudi Medical Journal

We report a case of Crohn9s disease in a 32-year old Saudi male. The disease presented with severe, life-threatening ileal bleeding necessitating an urgent laparotomy and 100 cm of ileum and ascending colon was resected. The bleeding source was several ulcers in an inflamed ileum and histopathologic examination revealed typical findings of Crohn9s disease with a chronic, transmural inflammation, non-caseating granuloma and the Ziehl-Neelsen stain was negative. The postoperative course was uneventful. On follow-up he is doing well on medical treatment with mesalamine and substitution therapy with vitamin B12.
