Lower Columbia College Enrollment Forecast, 2000 – 2010, Barry Edmonston, Risa Proehl
Lower Columbia College Enrollment Forecast, 2000 – 2010, Barry Edmonston, Risa Proehl
Publications, Reports and Presentations
This report provides a student enrollment forecast, including background demographic information and analysis, for Lower Columbia College (LCC). The report considers several factors that are likely to affect the College’s enrollment between 2000 and 2010, including and the geographical areas within and surrounding the service district (Cowlitz and Wahkiakum Counties, the cities of Longview, Kelso, Woodland and others in the vicinity). Five different scenarios of population, housing, and enrollment participation changes were developed to demonstrate their effects on enrollments. Three scenarios rely on different rates of housing and population growth, and two depend on changes of enrollment participation in the …

Gender On The Line: Technology, Restructuring And The Reorganization Of Work In The Call Centre Industry, Policy Report, Ruth Buchanan, Sara Koch-Schulte
Commissioned Reports, Studies and Public Policy Documents
This project, a case study of the emerging call centre industry in Canada, examines the impacts of restructuring on those in the lower tiers of the labour market. The first stage of the study surveyed managers at call centres in three sites in Canada: New Brunswick (St. John, Moncton and Fredericton), Winnipeg, Manitoba, and Toronto, Ontario. Issues surveyed included types of call centre applications, labour force composition (age, gender, race and disability), wage rates, hiring, training and promotion. The survey results clearly established that women and youth make up the majority of the call centre work force across Canada. The …

Forecasting New Zealand's Real Gdp, Aaron F. Schiff, Peter C.B. Phillips
Forecasting New Zealand's Real Gdp, Aaron F. Schiff, Peter C.B. Phillips
Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers
Recent time series methods are applied to the problem of forecasting New Zealand’s real GDP. Model selection is conducted within autoregressive (AR) and vector autoregressive (VAR) classes, allowing for evolution in the form of the models over time. The selections are performed using the Schwarz (1978) BIC and the Phillips-Ploberger (1996) PIC criteria. The forecasts generated by the data-determined AR models and an international VAR model are found to be competitive with forecasts from fixed format models and forecasts produced by the NZIER. Two illustrations of the methodology in conditional forecasting settings are performed with the VAR models. The first …
The Effect Of Bidders’ Asymmetries On Expected Revenue In Auctions, Estelle Cantillon
The Effect Of Bidders’ Asymmetries On Expected Revenue In Auctions, Estelle Cantillon
Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers
Bidders’ asymmetries are widespread in auction markets. Yet, their impact on behavior and, ultimately, revenue and profits is still not well understood. In this paper, I define a natural benchmark auction environment to which to compare any private value auction with asymmetrically distributed valuations. I show that the expected revenue from the benchmark auction always dominates that from the asymmetric auction, both in the first price auction and the second price auction. These results formalize and make transparent the idea that competition is reduced by bidders’ asymmetries. The paper also contributes to a better understanding of competition and the nature …
Entry And Vertical Differentiation, Dirk Bergemann, Juuso Välimäki
Entry And Vertical Differentiation, Dirk Bergemann, Juuso Välimäki
Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers
This paper analyzes the entry of new products into vertically differentiated markets where an entrant and an incumbent compete in quantities. The value of the new product is initially uncertain and new information is generated through purchases in the market. We derive the (unique) Markov perfect equilibrium of the infinite horizon game under the strong long run average payoff criterion. The qualitative features of the optimal entry strategy are shown to depend exclusively on the relative ranking of established and new products based on current beliefs. Superior products are launched relatively slowly and at high initial prices whereas substitutes for …

Theoretical Investigation On Dynamics Of Photopolymerization-Induced Phase Separation And Morphology Development In Nematic Liquid Crystal/Polymer Mixtures, Domasius Nwabunma, Hao-Wen Chiu, Thein Kyu
College of Polymer Science and Polymer Engineering
A theoretical investigation of the dynamics of photopolymerization-induced phase separation (PIPS) and morphology development in a nematic liquid crystal (LC) polymer network mixture has been undertaken by incorporating photopolymerization kinetics into the coupled time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau (TDGL-Model C) equations. The simulation on the spatio-temporal evolution of the coupled LC concentration and orientation order parameters reveals that both morphological and scattering patterns for the orientation order parameter initially lag behind those of the concentration order parameter. However, the two fields evolve to the same spatial topologies with the progression of time. The PIPS dynamics is characterized only by the late stage of …

We characterized a novel 28S rRNA cleavage in cells infected with the murine coronavirus mouse hepatitis virus (MHV). The 28S rRNA cleavage occurred as early as 4 h postinfection (p.i.) in MHV-infected DBT cells, with the appearance of subsequent cleavage products and a decrease in the amount of intact 28S rRNA with increasing times of infection; almost all of the intact 28S rRNA disappeared by 24 h p.i. In contrast, no specific 18S rRNA cleavage was detected in infected cells. MHV-induced 28S rRNA cleavage was detected in all MHV-susceptible cell lines and all MHV strains tested. MHV replication was required …

Based on various guild charters, most of which have never been studied before, this monograph analyzes the different ways in which artisans and merchants organized themselves during the Ottoman period, and asks whether these forms of organization changed during the first half of the nineteenth century.

Police Accountability And Early Warning Systems: Developing Policies And Programs, Geoffrey P. Alpert, Samuel Walker
Police Accountability And Early Warning Systems: Developing Policies And Programs, Geoffrey P. Alpert, Samuel Walker
Faculty Publications
The identification of police officers who have potential problems has emerged as a popular approach for curbing police misconduct and achieving accountability. Early warning (EW) systems are data-driven programs whose purpose is to identify officers whose behavior is problematic and to subject those officers to some kind of intervention, often in the form of counseling or training. Because of their potential for providing timely data on officer performance and giving police managers a framework for correcting unacceptable performance, early warning systems are consistent with the new demands for performance evaluation raised by community policing and the effective strategic management of …
