Hurricane Mitch Jet Stream, Juan Carlos Ruan

The Journal of Conventional Weapons Destruction

In October-November 1998, Hurricane Mitch wreaked havoc upon the Caribbean and parts of Central America. The damage the storm produced was unprecedented in the affected areas. In Honduras, Guatemala, Nicaragua, El Salvador and Costa Rica, UNICEF compiled these estimates on the human toll: 8,421 killed, 7,671 missing, 10,190 wounded, 1,537,687 evacuated and left homeless and 1,654,000 more affected in some direct way. Furthermore, Hurricane Mitch caused $6 billion worth of damage to the infrastructure of these countries.

Magnetic Properties Of Disordered Ni3C, Lanping Yue, R. Sabiryanov, E.M. Kirkpatrick, Diandra Leslie-Pelecky

The metastable Ni3C phase has been produced by mechanically alloying Ni and C. Ni3C particles of diameter 10 nm are produced after 90 h of mechanical alloying with no evidence of crystalline Ni in x ray or electron diffraction. Linear muffin-tin orbital band-structure calculations show that Ni3C is not expected to be ferromagnetic due to strong Ni-C hybridization in the ordered alloy; however, the introduction of even small amounts of disorder produces locally Ni-rich regions that can sustain magnetism.
