An Efficient Algorithm To Determine The Periodic Steady-State Solutions Of Nonlinear Systems Using Extended Spectral Analysis, Gülay Tohumoğlu Jan 2000

An Efficient Algorithm To Determine The Periodic Steady-State Solutions Of Nonlinear Systems Using Extended Spectral Analysis, Gülay Tohumoğlu

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

A new method for the solution of nonlinear periodic systems was developed. It avoids the time domain calculations of the whole network equations. In the proposed method, by forming the augmented network as linear and nonlinear subnetworks these subnetworks are formulated in complex frequency and time domain respectively. Using spectral analysis the steady-state periodic solution of the whole nonlinear network is reached by an iterative approach. The method can be applied efficiently to weak and strong nonlinear circuits equally well. When we divide the network into a large linear subnetwork and a small nonlinear subnetwork, this method can be applied …

The Debiasing Of Judgmental Errors Associated With Anxiety., Bret Gavin Bentz Jan 2000

The Debiasing Of Judgmental Errors Associated With Anxiety., Bret Gavin Bentz

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

It was the goal of the current study to investigate one debiasing technique and its ability to reduce judgmental errors. In addition, a rival hypothesis of demand characteristics was examined as a possible explanation of any findings of the reduction of judgmental errors. Participants were randomly assigned to either a control group or a debiasing group and asked to rate the likelihood of several hypothetical events in a 2 x 2 x 2 x 2 (Gender x Anxiety Group x Treatment Group x Repeated Measure) repeated measures experimental design. Level of anxiety responsiveness was measured to arrange subjects into a …

Articles

The Amateur Sky Survey (TASS) is a loose confederation of amateur and professional astronomers. We describe the design and construction of our Mark III system, a set of wide-field drift-scan CCD cameras which monitor the celestial equator down to thirteenth magnitude in several passbands. We explain the methods by which images are gathered, processed, and reduced into lists of stellar positions and magnitudes. Over the period October, 1996, to November, 1998, we compiled a large database of photometric measurements. One of our results is the tenxcat catalog, which contains measurements on the standard Johnson-Cousins system for 367,241 stars; it contains …

Seduced By Science: How American Religion Has Lost Its Way, Jay Tidmarsh Jan 2000

Seduced By Science: How American Religion Has Lost Its Way, Jay Tidmarsh

Journal Articles

For a Whiteheadian such as me, Steven Goldberg's Seduced by Science: How American Religion Has Lost Its Way starts with some correct and some incorrect premises and ends, not surprisingly, with some apposite and some inapposite conclusions. The burden of Goldberg's book is to argue that American religion, rather than making the distinctive contribution to American political and social life that it can and should, has instead been derailed into addressing questions on the terms of and with the language or methods of modern science. His argument proceeds in three parts. First, he describes three circumstances in which religion has …

A Dialogic Defense Of Alden, Jay Tidmarsh Jan 2000

A Dialogic Defense Of Alden, Jay Tidmarsh

Journal Articles

The opening paragraphs of the essay:

I find myself in the odd position of arguing that Alden v. Maine' is right, or at least not wrong. Do not misunderstand-I do not like the result in Alden any more than the next guy. But to not like the result and to argue that Alden is wrong as a matter of constitutional principle are two different matters. I am willing to argue that Alden is consistent with, albeit not compelled by, constitutional principle.

Implicit in the last sentence is the assumption that, had Alden been decided in accordance with Justice Souter's rather …

Catholic Health Care And The Diocesan Bishop, John J. Coughlin Jan 2000

Catholic Health Care And The Diocesan Bishop, John J. Coughlin

Journal Articles

Over the course of the last decade, the provision of health care in the United States has been undergoing a radical transformation. The days when an insurer, such as Blue Cross and Blue Shield, paid a standard fee to a physician who provided a specified service to an individual patient are passing rapidly. This fee-for-service concept, which characterized American health care from the end of World War II until the 1990s, is being supplanted by a variety of arrangements that fall under the general rubric of "managed care." The fundamental approach of managed care is to provide the patient with …

What Are The Limits On Warrantless Drug Testing Of Pregnant Women?, Richard W. Garnett Jan 2000

What Are The Limits On Warrantless Drug Testing Of Pregnant Women?, Richard W. Garnett

Journal Articles

From the Issue

Does the special-needs doctrine permit warrantless drug tests of pregnant women at a public hospital when the hospital's testing policy is designed in cooperation with police and prosecutors, and when test results are shared with law-enforcement officials and used to present women with a choice between treatment and arrest?

Choosing The Lesser Evil: Comments On Besharov's "Child Abuse Realities", Margaret F. Brinig Jan 2000

Choosing The Lesser Evil: Comments On Besharov's "Child Abuse Realities", Margaret F. Brinig

Journal Articles

Determining the degree of state intervention into intra-family decision making requires an unhappy choice between allowing abuse to continue or interfering with some families that would be better left alone. Mr. Besharov introduces the possible harms associated with the increased involvement of the state but fails to fully comprehend the circumstances that necessitate such involvement. Evils bracket the phenomenon discussed in Mr. Besharov's paper and this one. The difference in our approach lies in the choice we think is the lesser evil of the two, not that we think that either the harms associated with state involvement or the risk …

"I Am No Mean Player Myself": Games And Recreation In Irish Mythology, Julie Lynn Perenchio Jan 2000

"I Am No Mean Player Myself": Games And Recreation In Irish Mythology, Julie Lynn Perenchio

Masters Theses

Superhuman heroics in myth certainly succeed in capturing our immediate attention, but it takes a more human touch of talent and fallibility to make heroes personally appealing to readers. In Irish mythology, immortals and humans engage in a marvelous variety of recreational activities, and show universally-felt emotions and tendencies, like competitive spirits, creativity, and tenacity. Far from being idle entertainment, play makes significant impacts on the lives of Irish heroes, individually, socially, and culturally. For example, chess games, even between complete strangers, can cause the upheaval of one's lifestyle and test not only the intellectual powers of players, but also …

The Effects Of Empathy On Speech Ratings, Jill Mcnamara Jan 2000

The Effects Of Empathy On Speech Ratings, Jill Mcnamara

Masters Theses

This research project tests whether empathy has an affect upon ratings of speeches. First the rater' s individual level of empathy is surveyed. Next, the many different definitions of empathy are broken down into cognitive and affective perspectives and altruistic motivations. The likelihood of empathy being a dispositional or situational trait is discussed. Various methods used to train individuals to enhance their empathic skills through behavior observation and schools and how effective these methods have proven to be is identified. Empathy was then examined as to gender affects an individual's ability to experience that emotion. Using two different speeches, one …

A Time Resolved Laser Spectroscopy Study Of Resonance Energy Transfer Between Tb(Iii) And An Organic Dye: 6-Hydroxy-5-[(2-Methoxy-5-Methyl-4-Sulfophenyl)Azo]-2-Naphthalenesulfonic Acid Disodium Salt, Ronald Wesley Tennis Jan 2000

A Time Resolved Laser Spectroscopy Study Of Resonance Energy Transfer Between Tb(Iii) And An Organic Dye: 6-Hydroxy-5-[(2-Methoxy-5-Methyl-4-Sulfophenyl)Azo]-2-Naphthalenesulfonic Acid Disodium Salt, Ronald Wesley Tennis

Masters Theses

Intermolecular energy transfer is a process of crucial importance to photochemistry and photophysics. Complexed lanthanide ions are well suited as energy transfer donors because they display dependable absorption and luminescence qualities with narrow rare-earthion emission in addition to relatively long excited-state lifetimes.

This project used a pulsed nitrogen laser and high speed digital techniques to study energy transfer dynamics between excited state Tb(acac)3 and an ionic organic dye called Red 40. Luminescence decay profiles of excited terbium atoms in the presence of the quencher were measured in both high and low viscosity solvents. The effects of solvent viscosity and …

Victorian Philosophies Of Useless Work Versus Work For The Mind: Carlyle, Ruskin, Morris, And Marx, Marlaina Easton Jan 2000

Victorian Philosophies Of Useless Work Versus Work For The Mind: Carlyle, Ruskin, Morris, And Marx, Marlaina Easton

Masters Theses

In my Thesis, I will investigate the dominant perceptions of work that spanned the Victorian Period. One of the most important authors of criticism dealing with work in the early part of the Victorian Period was Thomas Carlyle (1845). John Ruskin then became a counterpoint to Carlyle throughout the middle of the century (1862). And although he agreed with much of what Carlyle said, he brings new notions of work to the Victorian Period. William Morris then offered a completely different point of view on the issue of work at the latter part of the Victorian Period (1885). I will …

Equilibrium And Kinetic Studies Of Isomerization Of (Co)5w[Η1-Pph2ch2p(P-Tol)2] And (Co)5w[Η1-P(P-Tol)2ch2pph2], Deliang Chen

Masters Theses

Unsymmetrical diphosphine tungsten complexes, (CO)5W[η1-PPh2CH2P(p-tol)2] and (CO)5W[η1-P(p-tol)2CH2PPh2], were prepared from (CO)5W(NH2Ph) and Ph2PCH2P(p-tol)2. Two approaches were successfully used to synthesize Ph2PCH2P(p-tol)2. The first utilized PPh2CH2Cl, prepared from PPh2H, CH2Cl2, and KOH under phase transfer conditions, from which Ph2PCH2P(p-tol)2 was …

Effects Of Apolipoprotein E On Olfactory Neuron Plasticity In Mice, Rafia Nisar Jan 2000

Effects Of Apolipoprotein E On Olfactory Neuron Plasticity In Mice, Rafia Nisar

Masters Theses

Previous studies have shown that apoE is upregulated in injured nerves, and that it may participate in nerve regeneration by recycling lipids from the degenerating myelin sheath to axonal growth cones. However, these studies fail to differentiate apoE function in degeneration and regeneration, because of temporal juxtaposition of degeneration and regeneration in these models. In this study, we characterized the apoE expression during olfactory nerve regeneration in mice, which occurs over an extended seven week period. Olfactory nerves were lesioned in 2-3-month-old mice by intransal irrigation of Triton X-100. Following lesioning the olfactory bulbs were collected at 0, 3, 7, …

Relationship Between Protective Effects Of Estrogen, Apoe And Alzheimer's Disease, Sara M. Ludwig Jan 2000

Relationship Between Protective Effects Of Estrogen, Apoe And Alzheimer's Disease, Sara M. Ludwig

Masters Theses

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a neurodegerative disorder characterized by progressive memory loss and loss of cognitive function. The pathogenesis and progression of AD is poorly understood. Recently, several risk factors have been determined, however, how these risk factors function to induce AD onset has yet to be elucidated.

Apolipoprotein E genotype has been clearly demonstrated to be a risk factor for AD. The apoE2 and apoE3 isoforms appear to be protective against AD, whereas the apoE4 isoform has been implicated in the development of AD. The apoE4 allele works in a dosage-dependent fashion; that is, the greater the expression of …
