A Comparison Of Ground Reaction Forces During Running And Form Skipping, Samuel Thomas Johnson

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Following lower extremity injury an athlete may be able to walk within days, however they may not be capable of running for weeks or even months. During this time, the athletic trainer provides the athlete with progressions to running. One activity that has been used successfully in this progression is the form skip. It remains unknown why the athlete is capable of successfully performing the form skip before they can run; The purpose of this study was to investigate the ground reaction forces (GRF) during form skipping and running. Healthy subjects (N = 9) ran and skipped across the force …

Pedogenic Gypsum Of Southern New Mexico: Genesis, Morphology, And Stable Isotopic Signature, John Grant Van Hoesen Jan 2000

Pedogenic Gypsum Of Southern New Mexico: Genesis, Morphology, And Stable Isotopic Signature, John Grant Van Hoesen

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Recent work in Canada and Iran (Dowuona et al., 1992 and Khademi et al., 1997a; 1997b) suggested a correlation exists between the delta18 O and deltaD ratios of the hydration water of pedogenic gypsum and the delta18O/deltaD ratios of meteoric water. However, a pedogenic origin for the sampled gypsum was not clearly supported and the results from this procedure were not compared to other paleoclimatic indicators. Therefore, the goals of this study were, (1) evaluate the genesis and soil morphology of pedogenic gypsum in and to semi-arid regions and (2) determine the applicability of pedogenic gypsum as a paleoclimatic indicator; …

Effects Of A 30-Minute Walk On Ground Reaction Forces During Walking With An External Load, Cheryl M Cardillo

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

To investigate effects of a 30-minute walk on kinetics of walking with an external load, ten subjects performed five walking trials across a force platform for five conditions. Walking speed was 1.57m/s for all conditions. The first two conditions had subjects walk without (C1) and with (C2) backpack load. Subjects then walked on a treadmill at 1.57m/s for 30 minutes. At 10 minute intervals GRF data were collected. In comparing C1 and C2, dependent variables F1, F2, and Favg revealed increases of 10.45%, 13.68%, and 11.75% respectively (p < 0.01) indicating a mechanical response. No effect for time was observed for any variable tested. Therefore, the null hypothesis that load does not have an effect on vertical GRF was rejected. The null hypothesis that time does not have an effect on vertical GRF was not rejected. Overall, forces were elevated during load carrying, which may result in added stress on anatomical structures.

Since BGP has an impact on routing in the global Internet, the design and implementation of …

The Ban On Reason: Gays In The Military, Justin Cohen Jan 2000

The Ban On Reason: Gays In The Military, Justin Cohen

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This thesis seeks to explain how and why President Bill Clinton's 1993 attempt to drop the ban on homosexuals serving in the military was vehemently opposed by key stakeholders, even though empirical evidence strongly indicates that the ban is unwarranted and conflicts with America's democratic ethos; The theoretical framework for this paper is based on Roger Cobb and Charles Elder's writings on the political use of symbols. By manipulating cultural symbols, such as that of the masculine warrior, opponents of policy change forced Clinton into a compromise, the unsuccessful "don't ask, don't tell" policy. In torpedoing Clinton's effort, these antagonists …

Tainted Perceptions: Liberal-Democracy And American Popular Images Of China, Thomas Laszlo Dorogi Jan 2000

Tainted Perceptions: Liberal-Democracy And American Popular Images Of China, Thomas Laszlo Dorogi

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The primary thesis of this study is that beginning with the pre-Tiananmen Square incident of 1989, American popular and institutional images of China focused on the reformist nature the government, but following the military crackdown in June 1989, this optimism dwindled and resulted in the creation of an ambivalent cross-cultural atmosphere toward the Chinese for the next half decade. When Chinese leaders decided to undertake military exercises in the Taiwan Strait in mid-1995, America's perception of the PRC swung even further in a distinctly negative direction; an event that marked the outset of a three year period during which Chinese …

The problem presented deals with determining the shortest tree connecting Steiner nodes in a graph that has no direct connections between the Steiner nodes. Both algorithms are described and analyzed in detail with an appropriate running …

The Gamma Distribution As An Alternative To The Lognormal Distribution In Environmental Applications, Ross Joseph Iaci Jan 2000

The Gamma Distribution As An Alternative To The Lognormal Distribution In Environmental Applications, Ross Joseph Iaci

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

In environmental applications dealing with data from contaminated sites the positively skewed lognormal distribution has been the most commonly used model. The upper confidence limit (UCL) of the arithmetic mean of a lognormal population is computed by using the H-statistics. Recent concerns have arisen to the effectiveness of the H-Statistic based UCL for the mean of the lognormal distribution in instances of moderately to highly skewed data sets. In this paper the positively skewed Gamma distribution is considered as an alternative to the lognormal distribution and is shown to produce more reasonable UCL's for the mean.

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of a twelve-hour diabetic education program on self-care behaviors and level of integration of diabetes in patients with type 1 & type 2 diabetes. Using the Theory of Integration (Hernandez, 1995) as the study's conceptual framework, an outcomes study was conducted. Thirty-five questionnaires were distributed to subjects at the initial class of the diabetes education program, with 22 being able to be utilized for analysis; The results of this study showed that there was a significant increase in the level of integration of diabetes (t(21) = 2.998, p < .005). When individual statements of integration were assessed, three areas were found to have a significant increase. These included, understanding how diabetes affects one's body by living with diabetes (t(21) = 2.890, p < .005), being aware of bodily cues that distinguish blood glucose levels (t(21) = 2.822, p < .005), and knowing more about taking care of one's diabetes more than anyone (t(21) = 3.044, p < .005); Analysis of individual statements of self-care behavior included significant changes in eating the foods according to a diabetes meal plan (t(22) = 2.802, p < .005), eating snacks at the right time of day (t(21) = 3.049, p < .005), knowing how to treat a hypoglycemic reaction (t(22) 3.323, p < .005) and carrying a sugar source to treat those hypoglycemic reactions (t(22) = 3.045, p < .005). Significant increases were also noted in the logging of blood glucose results (t(22) = 3.239, p < .005), and in obtaining the amount of exercise needed for diabetes (t(22) = 3.023, p < .005). This study is an important initial evaluation of the effects of a diabetes education program on diabetes patients' selfcare behaviors and level of integration.

The Removal Of Perchlorate From Waters By A Membrane-Immobilized Biofilm, Jian Liu Jan 2000

The Removal Of Perchlorate From Waters By A Membrane-Immobilized Biofilm, Jian Liu

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This thesis investigated the feasibility of using a membrane-immobilized biofilm reactor to remove perchlorate from waters. Perchlorate (ClO4 -) is easily reduced under anaerobic conditions to harmless chloride (Cl-). In this system, the perchlorate-contaminated water is physically separated from the biofilm by the membrane. Perchlorate diffuses, without the need of external energy, to the degrading biofilm, thereby minimizing the contamination of the product water by microbes. A mixed microbial culture capable biologically of reducing perchlorate was enriched and attached to the membrane surface. The results demonstrated the feasibility of using a membrane-immobilized biofilm reactor to remove perchlorate from waters. In …
