Interpretation Of Cone Penetration Test Data For Underconsolidated Clay, Jeffrey Alec Moss Jan 2000

Interpretation Of Cone Penetration Test Data For Underconsolidated Clay, Jeffrey Alec Moss

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

In this study, cone penetration test data is correlated to vane shear and triaxial undrained shear strength test data for a saturated and underconsolidated marine clay. It is shown that cone penetration test data not corrected for pore pressures underestimates undrained shear strength. Additionally, small increases in the degree of consolidation of the underconsolidated clay increases the undrained shear strengths.

Sodium Metasomatism And Magnesio-Riebeckite Mineralization In The Wilson Ridge Pluton, Deborah Ann Potts

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The Wilson Ridge pluton contains a rare occurrence of hydrothermal sodic amphibole. hydrothermal amphibole occurs as fracture coatings, veinlets, dense stockwork-type networks, and diffusive alteration fronts. Electron microprobe analyses of the hydrothermal amphibole reveal a range of Na-rich compositions, most notably magnesio-riebeckite. Magnesio-riebeckite in the Wilson Ridge pluton formed by Na-metasomatism related to subsolidus hydrothermal alteration involving Na-rich fluids of meteoric origin. Whole-rock geochemistry of samples from zones of hydrothermal amphibole show enrichment of Na2O (>9.6 wt. %) and depletion of K2O (0.15 wt. %) and CaO (2.4 wt. %) relative to unaltered host rock. Secondary fluid inclusions associated …

Automated Mammographic Mass Shape Classification Using Wavelets And Neural Networks, Nithya Shanmugam Jan 2000

Automated Mammographic Mass Shape Classification Using Wavelets And Neural Networks, Nithya Shanmugam

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The objective of the thesis is to demonstrate the utility of wavelet transforms with artificial neural networks for the classification of mammographic mass shapes. A fully automated mammographic classification system has been developed to distinctly classify mass shapes as either round, which typically indicates the absence of breast cancer, or irregular, which typically indicates the presence of cancer. First, a wavelet transform was applied to the radial distance measure (RDM) of the mass shapes to obtain multiscale decomposition. The discrete wavelet transform and wavelet packet decompositions were investigated. The second step was the computation of scalar-energy features from the wavelet …

An Application Of Optimal Control Theory In Welfare Economics, Steven Ernest Scroggin Jan 2000

An Application Of Optimal Control Theory In Welfare Economics, Steven Ernest Scroggin

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

We consider the maximization of a functional representing social welfare over continuous time. A social welfare functional (SWF) is an integral that models social welfare as a function of individual consumption, individual utility of consumption and the value of utility aggregated across individuals. A SWF may be subject to constraints in the form of differential or integral equations and inequalities, which represent the production possibilities of the economy. We solve the optimization problem by applying the Pontryagin maximum principle. We consider an autarky and a command economy. We explore the interaction of impatience and productivity in autarky and the implications …

United States Population Policies And Environmental Ethics: Addressing Population Growth From The Biocentric Perspective, Philip Davis Macwilliams Jan 2000

United States Population Policies And Environmental Ethics: Addressing Population Growth From The Biocentric Perspective, Philip Davis Macwilliams

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

When the environmental movement began to surge in the 1960s, concerns were raised over the prospects of the U.S. population growing to an unsustainable level and causing irreparable harm to the environment and our quality of life. Unfortunately, population growth has not been given the priority it deserves not because it is not an important issue, but because of our failure to view population growth, and all environmental issues, from a biocentric outlook. It is this paradigm shift towards biocentrism that we as moral agents should be making and which will subsequently cause us to view population growth in a …

Sex, Gender And Genesis: A Cixousian Exploration Of Language In The Gay Marriage Debates, Nancy Jean Martin Jan 2000

Sex, Gender And Genesis: A Cixousian Exploration Of Language In The Gay Marriage Debates, Nancy Jean Martin

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

How does language structure patriarchy? How are gendered language and creation story imagery evidenced in contemporary debates on gay marriage? Helene Cixous suggests that Western thought is organized around binary, hierarchical oppositions---the most fundamental of which are male over female and masculine over feminine. Language and its connections to psychological and her/historical origins are central to her work. Cixous suggests that the separation of male and female, masculine and feminine, result in a war of sexual difference. I explore these themes with a feminist deconstruction of Internet sites in support of and against gay marriage. I then utilize Cixous's feminine …

Evidence Of The Chumash Plank Canoe At Ca-Sba52, Santa Barbara County, California, Suzan Faye Rose

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The Chumash plank canoe or tomol, was an important part of the maritime subsistence pattern of the Chumash as well as an important element in the maintenance of a complex heirarchical socio-political structure. The placement in time of the origin of the tomol is critical to many models of culture change and cultural ecology in the Santa Barbara Channel area. The assemblage of artifacts and features at CA-SBa-52 on the Goleta Slough adds to the body of data regarding the development of the tomol and indicates that it may have had a longer history in the area than previously suspected.

Heat Shock Protein 27 Inhibition Of The Caspase Cascade In Human Breast Cancer Cells, Lewis Joe Stafford Jan 2000

Heat Shock Protein 27 Inhibition Of The Caspase Cascade In Human Breast Cancer Cells, Lewis Joe Stafford

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Cells may die via a programmed cell death called apoptosis. Apoptosis can be triggered by many death signals, some of which cause cytochrome c to be released from the mitochondria initiating the caspase cascade. When there is an over-expression of Heat Shock Protein 27 (HSP27), the cell does not obey the death signals that it receives. In this study, the molecular mechanism for the HSP 27 inhibition of the caspase cascade is described in human breast cancer cells that were engineered to constitutively express HSP 27. HSP 27 directly bound to cytochrome c and inhibited the activation of caspase 9 …

Bioinformatic Analysis: Retroposon Sequences Containing Multiple Putative Endonucleases, Seanna Kathleen Corro

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Among the retroposons, the source of the endonuclease activity is known to be variable. We investigated whether any retroposon genomes encode potential multiple endonuclease functions. Amino acid alignments were generated to reveal the presence of the characterized ordered-series-of-motifs (OSM) that define four different endonuclease functions. These endonuclease functions include a retroviral-like integrase (IN), an apurinic-apyrimidinic endonuclease (APE), the PDD endonuclease recently identified in the R2BM retroposon and an HNH endonuclease signature conserved by the group 11 intron sequences. The results indicate that the spliced l eader associated conserved sequences (SLACS) of T. brucei, c ruzi-associated retrotransposon (CZAR) of Trypanosoma cruzi, …
