Measurement Of The Z Resonance Parameters At Lep, R. Barate, M. Thulasidas

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The properties of the Z resonance are measured from the analysis of 4.5 million Z decays into fermion pairs collected with the ALEPH detector at LEP. The data are consistent with lepton universality. The resonance parameters are measured to be MZ=(91.1885±0.0031)GeV/c2MZ=(91.1885±0.0031)GeV/c2, ΓZ=(2.4951±0.0043)ΓZ=(2.4951±0.0043) GeV, σ0had=(41.559±0.058)σhad0=(41.559±0.058) nb and, combining the three lepton flavours, Rℓ=20.725±0.039Rℓ=20.725±0.039. The corresponding number of light neutrino species is Nν=2.983±0.013Nν=2.983±0.013 and the strong coupling constant is αs(MZ)=0.114±0.004±0.002QCD+0.005log10[MH150GeV/c2]αs(MZ)=0.114±0.004±0.002QCD+0.005log10⁡[MH150GeV/c2]. The lepton pair forward-backward asymmetry is measured to be A0,ℓFB=0.0173±0.0016AFB0,ℓ=0.0173±0.0016 from which the effective weak mixing angle is derived: sin2θlepteff=0.23089±0.00089sin2⁡θefflept=0.23089±0.00089. Measurements Of The Structure Of Quark And Gluon Jets In Hadronic Z Decays, R. Barate, M. Thulasidas Jan 2000

Measurements Of The Structure Of Quark And Gluon Jets In Hadronic Z Decays, R. Barate, M. Thulasidas

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

An experimental investigation of the structure of identified quark and gluon jets is presented. Observables related to both the global and internal structure of jets are measured; this allows for tests of QCD over a wide range of transverse momentum scales. The observables include distributions of jet-shape variables, the mean and standard deviation of the subjet multiplicity distribution and the fragmentation function for charged particles. The data are compared with predictions of perturbative QCD as well as QCD-based Monte Carlo models. In certain kinematic regions the measurements are sensitive mainly to perturbatively calculable effects, allowing for a test of QCD. …

Search For R-Parity Violating Decays Of Supersymmetric Particles In E+E- Collisions At Centre-Of-Mass Energies Near 183 Gev, R. Barate, M. Thulasidas Jan 2000

Search For R-Parity Violating Decays Of Supersymmetric Particles In E+E- Collisions At Centre-Of-Mass Energies Near 183 Gev, R. Barate, M. Thulasidas

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Searches for pair-production of supersymmetric particles under the assumption that R-parity is violated via a single dominant LLE¯LLE¯, LQD¯LQD¯ or U¯D¯D¯U¯D¯D¯ coupling are performed using the data collected by the ALEPH collaboration at centre-of-mass energies of 181–184 GeV. The observed candidate events in the data are in agreement with the Standard Model expectations. Upper limits on the production cross-sections and lower limits on the masses of charginos, sleptons, squarks and sneutrinos are derived.

The production rates of D∗±D∗±, D∗±sDs∗±, D±D±, D0/D¯0D0/D¯0, D±sDs±, and Λ+c/Λ¯−cΛc+/Λ¯c− in Z→cc¯Z→cc¯ decays are measured using the LEP I data sample recorded by the ALEPH detector. The fractional energy spectrum of the D∗±D∗± is well described as the sum of three contributions: charm hadronisation, b hadron decays and gluon splitting into a pair of heavy quarks. The probability for a c quark to hadronise into a D∗+D∗+ is found to be f(c→D∗+)=0.233±0.010(stat.)±0.011(syst.)f(c→D∗+)=0.233±0.010(stat.)±0.011(syst.). The average fraction of the beam energy carried by D∗±D∗± mesons in Z→cc¯Z→cc¯ events is measured to be ⟨XE(D∗±)⟩cc¯=0.4878±0.0046(stat.)±0.0061(syst.).⟨XE(D∗±)⟩cc¯=0.4878±0.0046(stat.)±0.0061(syst.). Study Of Fermion Pair Production In E+E- Collisions At 130-183 Gev, R. Barate, M. Thulasidas

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The cross sections and forward-backward asymmetries of hadronic and leptonic events produced in e+e−e+e− collisions at centre-of-mass energies from 130 to 183 GeV are presented. Results for e+e−e+e−, μ+μ−μ+μ−, τ+τ−τ+τ−, qq¯qq¯, bb¯bb¯ and cc¯cc¯ production show no significant deviation from the Standard Model predictions. This enables constraints to be set upon physics beyond the Standard Model such as four-fermion contact interactions, leptoquarks, Z′Z′ bosons and R-parity violating squarks and sneutrinos. Limits on the energy scale ΛΛ of e+e−ff¯e+e−ff¯ contact interactions are typically in the range from 2 to 10 TeV. Limits on R-parity violating sneutrinos reach masses of a few …

An Integrated Data Mining System To Automate Discovery, Cecil Chua, Roger Hsiang-Li Chiang, Ee Peng Lim Jan 2000

An Integrated Data Mining System To Automate Discovery, Cecil Chua, Roger Hsiang-Li Chiang, Ee Peng Lim

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Many data analysts require tools which can integrate their database management packages (e.g. Microsoft Access) with their data analysis ones (e.g. SAS, SPSS), and provide guidance for the selection of appropriate mining algorithms. In addition, the analysts need to extract and validate statistical results to facilitate data mining. In this paper, we describe an integrated data mining system called the Linear Correlation Discovery System (LCDS) that meets the above requirement. LCDS consists of four major sub-components, two of which, the selection assistant and the statistics coupler, are discussed in this paper. The former examines the schema and instances to determine …

Some Remarks On Fair Exchange Protocol, Jianying Zhou, Robert H. Deng, Feng Bao Jan 2000

Some Remarks On Fair Exchange Protocol, Jianying Zhou, Robert H. Deng, Feng Bao

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Fair exchange turns out to be an increasingly important topic due to the rapid growth of electronic commerce. An exchange is deemed to be fair if at the end of exchange, either each party receives the expected item or neither party receives any useful information about the other’s item. Several protocols for fair exchange have been proposed in recent years. In this paper, we first examine a newly published fair exchange protocol and point out its flaws and weaknesses. We then put forward a more efficient and secure protocol and give an informal analysis.

Solving A Supply Chain Optimization Problem Collaboratively, Hoong Chuin Lau, A. L. C. Lim, Q Liu Jan 2000

Solving A Supply Chain Optimization Problem Collaboratively, Hoong Chuin Lau, A. L. C. Lim, Q Liu

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

We propose a novel algorithmic framework to solve an integrated planning and scheduling problem in supply chain management. This problem involves the integration of an inventory management problem and the vehicle routing problem with time windows, both of which are known to be NP-hard. Under this framework, algorithms that solve the underlying sub-problems collaborate rigorously yet in a computationally efficient manner to arrive at a good solution. We will then present two algorithms to solve the inventory management problem: a complete mathematical model integrating integer programming with constraint programming, and an incomplete algorithm based on tabu search. We present experimental …

Nitrogen Isotopic Composition Of Pore Water Ammonium, Blake Ridge, Site 997, Odp Leg 164, Walter S. Borowski, Charles K. Paull

EKU Faculty and Staff Scholarship

Ammonium (NH4 +) concentration profiles in piston-core sediments of the Carolina Rise and Blake Ridge generally have linear concentration profiles within the sulfate reduction zone (Borowski, 1998). Deep Sea Drilling Project (DSDP) Site 533, located on the Blake Ridge, also displayed a linear ammonium concentration profile through the sulfate reduction zone and the profile linearity continues into the upper methanogenic zone to a depth of ~200 meters below seafloor (mbsf), where the first methane gas hydrates probably occur (Jenden and Gieskes, 1983; Kvenvolden and Barnard, 1983). Sediments from the Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Leg 164 deep holes (Sites 994, 995, …

Significance Of Anaerobic Methane Oxidation In Methane-Rich Sediments Overlying The Blake Ridge Gas Hydrates, Walter S. Borowski, Tori M. Hoehler, Mark J. Alperin, Namcy M. Rodriguez, Charles K. Paull

EKU Faculty and Staff Scholarship

A unique set of geochemical pore-water data, characterizing the sulfate reduction and uppermost methanogenic zones, has been collected at the Blake Ridge (offshore southeastern North America) from Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Leg 164 cores and piston cores. The δ13 C values of dissolved CO2(Σ CO2) are as 13 C-depleted as –37.7‰ PDB (Site 995) at the sulfate-methane interface, reflecting a substantial contribution of isotopically light carbon from methane. Although the geochemical system is complex and difficult to fully quantify, we use two methods to constrain and illustrate the intensity of anaerobic methane oxidation in Blake Ridge sediments. An estimate using …

Towards A Defensible Free Exercise Doctrine, Frederick Mark Gedicks Jan 2000

Towards A Defensible Free Exercise Doctrine, Frederick Mark Gedicks

Faculty Scholarship

Almost from the moment that the Supreme Court abandoned the religious exemption doctrine in Employment Division v. Smith, its defenders have worked to bring it back. More than a decade later, however, Smith remains well-entrenched; not only has the Court confirmed Smith's basic holding, but it also struck the Religious Freedom Restoration Act, Congress's first effort to restore the exemption doctrine, at least as it applied to the states.

Proponents of religious exemptions cannot ignore the hard truth that they can no longer be defended. During the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, American society viewed the practice of religion-mostly Christian …

"The following is a distillation of a spoken presentation by the author, assisted by the Andrews University choirs, given as the opening event of Faith Ablaze! Hymns of Heart and Heritage, a hymn festival held at Andrews University in November, 1999.1 It is a journey through time, starting with the beginnings of the church and continuing to the present, one in which we hope you, the reader, like those present that evening, can come to a better understanding of how our hymns came about, and what they meant to those who preceded us. Given the constraints in time that evening …

The Integration Of Relationship Instances From Heterogeneous Databases, Ee Peng Lim, Roger Hsiang-Li Chiang Jan 2000

The Integration Of Relationship Instances From Heterogeneous Databases, Ee Peng Lim, Roger Hsiang-Li Chiang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In the process of integrating legacy databases, one has to resolve inter-database conflicts at both the schema and instance levels. In this paper, we discuss relationship conflicts as a special type of conflicts to be resolved during the database integration. Relationships are properties that relate real world objects. So far, most inter-database relationship conflicts are addressed at the schema-level by various schema integration techniques. However, instance-level relationship conflicts are largely neglected. This paper therefore investigates the causes of instance-level relationship conflicts and proposes a taxonomy for classifying instance-level relationship conflicts. In addition, we develop a systematic process to resolve instance-level …

Methodologies. This is the first time we organize this new minitrack on electronic commerce systems development. The flexibility, scalability, user-friendliness, privacy, security, intuitiveness, and other important characteristics of electronic commerce systems make the systems development process of such systems very multifaceted and complex. Today, most electronic commerce systems are built based on intuition and rule of thumbs. Many practitioners have the misconception that there is no need for a systematic modeling and design technique for these systems. The lack of appropriate methods and methodologies to support electronic commerce systems development is another stumbling block. Most of the widely used methods are …

The e+-jet invariant mass spectrum produced in the reaction e+p → e+ X has been studied at a center-of-mass energy of 300 GeV. The data were collected using the ZEUS detector operating at the HERA collider, and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 47.7 pb-1. The observed mass spectrum is in good agreement with Standard Model expectations up to an e+-jet mass of 210 GeV. Above this mass, some excess is seen. The angular distribution of these events is typical of high-Q2 neutral current events and does not give convincing evidence for the presence of a narrow scalar or vector …

The production of D*± (2010) mesons in deep inelastic scattering has been measured in the ZEUS detector at HERA using an integrated luminosity of 37 pb-1. The decay channels D*+ → D0π+ (+c.c.), with D0 → K-π+ or D0 → K-π-π+π+, have been used to identify the D mesons. The e+p cross section for inclusive D*± production with 1 < Q2 < 600 GeV2 and 0.02 < y < 0.7 is 8.31±0.31(stat.)+0.30-0.50 (syst.) nb in the kinematic region 1.5 < pT(D*±) < 15 GeV and \η(D*±)\ < 1.5. Differential cross sections are consistent with a next-to-leading-order perturbative-QCD calculation when using charm-fragmentation models which take into account the interaction of the charm quark with the proton remnant. The observed cross section is extrapolated to the full kinematic region in pT(D*±) and η(D*±) in order to determine the charm contribution, Fcc̄2 (x, Q2), to the proton structure function. The ratio Fcc̄2/F2 rises from ≃10% at Q2 ≃ 1.8GeV2 to ≃30% at Q2 ≃130GeV2 for x values in the range 10-4 to 10-3.

Correlations between charged particles in deep inelastic e+ p scattering have been studied in the Breit frame with the ZEUS detector at HERA using an integrated luminosity of 6.4pb-1. Short-range correlations are analysed in terms of the angular separation between current-region particles within a cone centred around the virtual photon axis. Long-range correlations between the current and target regions have also been measured. The data support predictions for the scaling behaviour of the angular correlations at high Q2 and for anti-correlations between the current and target regions over a large range in Q2 and in the Bjorken scaling variable x. …

The e+p charged-current deep inelastic scattering cross sections, dσ/dQ2 for Q2 between 200 and 60000 GeV2, and dσ/dx and dσ/dy for Q2 > 200 GeV2, have been measured with the ZEUS detector at HERA. A data sample of 47.7 pb-1, collected at a center-of-mass energy of 300 GeV, has been used. The double-differential cross-section dσ/dQ2 falls by a factor of about 50000 as Q2 increases from 280 to 30000 GeV2. The double differential cross section d2σ/dxdQ2 has also been measured. A comparison between the data and Standard Model (SM) predictions shows that contributions from antiquarks (ū and c̄) and quarks (d …

Predicting Turnover And Retention In Nursing Home Administrators: Management And Policy Implications, Douglas A. Singh, Robert C. Schwab

Faculty Publications

Administrator turnover and its impact on the quality of patient care are important concerns in the nursing home industry. This study evaluates a model to determine which factors, attitudes, and personal characteristics can predict tenure. Responses to a survey from 290 nursing home administrators (NHAs) who furnished data on their previous positions were analyzed using logistic regression methods. The extracted model correlates tenure with the administrator's past patterns of stability, community attachment, organizational commitment, and facility performance. The model is particularly effective (85% accuracy) in flagging NHAs who are likely to depart within their first 3 years of employment. Implications …
