Low levels of physical activity and fitness substantially increase risk of several chronic diseases, reduce longevity, and lead to loss of function. The strength and relation of inactivity to health problems and the high prevalence of sedentary habits in most countries of the world make lack of exercise a major public health problem. Fortunately, there is now good consensus regarding public health recommendations for physical activity from many important medical, scientific, and public health organizations. Recent research on physical activity interventions provides additional approaches to helping sedentary adults become more physically active.

The Politics Of Meaning: Law Dictionaries And The Liberal Tradition Of Interpretation, Gary L. Mcdowell Jan 2000

The Politics Of Meaning: Law Dictionaries And The Liberal Tradition Of Interpretation, Gary L. Mcdowell

Law Faculty Publications

At least since John Cowell's Interpreter was adjudged by the Committee on Grievances of the House of Commons in 1610 to be "very unadvised, and undiscreet, tending to the disreputation of the honour and power of the common laws" have law dictionaries been objects of occasional controversy. Yet legal dictionaries, as well as dictionaries more generally, have remained a constant resource in American law for those seeking to give meaning to the words of both statutes and constitutional provisions. They have appeared in the pages of the reports since the beginning of the republic; a majority of the justices of …

Remembering Societal Trauma : Catastrophic Events Of The Twentieth Century In The Soviet Union And The Shaping Of Cultural Memory In Soviet Children's Political Literature, Sean Ozzie Simpkins Jan 2000

Remembering Societal Trauma : Catastrophic Events Of The Twentieth Century In The Soviet Union And The Shaping Of Cultural Memory In Soviet Children's Political Literature, Sean Ozzie Simpkins

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Since the collapse of communism in Eastern Europe, there have been several waves of interest in establishing more contemporary relations with Russia, punctuated by failure and frustration. Many who would deal with the Russians have little factual information concerning Russian history, and are guided largely by some combination of good will, self interest, and outmoded structural assumptions concerning Russia and the Russian experience (Wedel 1998). This ignorance, in turn, contributes to negative perceptual and behavioral responses on the part of the Russians to these overtures, and any that may follow. The result can lead to a misreading of intent and …

Into The Wind: Rhett Butler And The Law Of War At Sea, John Paul Jones Jan 2000

Into The Wind: Rhett Butler And The Law Of War At Sea, John Paul Jones

Law Faculty Publications

In this article, Prof. Jones reviews Scarlett O'Hara reported in the novel Gone with the Wind about Rhett Butler's career as a blockade runner for the Confederacy, and speculates about what the law of war at sea might have meant for Captain Butler's commercial operations. He focuses on three aspects of the law of war at sea-capture or prize, blockade, and neutrality.

The White Commission And The Federal Circuit, Carl W. Tobias Jan 2000

The White Commission And The Federal Circuit, Carl W. Tobias

Law Faculty Publications

The Commission on Structural Alternatives for the Federal Courts of Appeals, or White Commission, ("the Commission") recently issued a report and recommendations for Congress and the President after studying the appellate courts for a year. The Commission investigation emphasized the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, as Congress had instructed. The centerpiece of the Commission's recommendations was a divisional arrangement for the Ninth Circuit and the remaining appellate courts as their caseloads increase. Notwithstanding this focus on the Ninth Circuit, the commissioners compiled a substantial amount of objective empirical data and some subjective information on the other …

Taking Regulatory Takings Personally: The Perils Of (Mis)Reasoning By Analogy, Michael Allan Wolf Jan 2000

Taking Regulatory Takings Personally: The Perils Of (Mis)Reasoning By Analogy, Michael Allan Wolf

Law Faculty Publications

In a troublesome area of the law, it is hard for a legal academic to resist the temptation to attempt to "enlighten" the judiciary. It has not been the author's practice to date, in ruminating on the profound puzzle of regulatory takings, to instruct judges concerning the errors of their ways. Because only an insider can be truly familiar with the nuances of a specific legal challenge and owing to a deep respect for the judicial craft, this writer has resisted the urge to preach. It has been a sufficiently provocative challenge to interpret the meanings and implications of decisions …

Computational Fluid Dynamics Modeling Of A Lithium/Thionyl Chloride Battery With Electrolyte Flow, W. B. Gu, C. Y. Wang, John W. Weidner, Rudolph G. Jungst, Ganesan Nagasubramanian Jan 2000

Computational Fluid Dynamics Modeling Of A Lithium/Thionyl Chloride Battery With Electrolyte Flow, W. B. Gu, C. Y. Wang, John W. Weidner, Rudolph G. Jungst, Ganesan Nagasubramanian

Faculty Publications

A two-dimensional model is developed to simulate discharge of a lithium/thionyl chloride primary battery. As in earlier one-dimensional models, the model accounts for transport of species and charge, and electrode porosity variations and electrolyte flow induced by the volume reduction caused by electrochemical reactions. Numerical simulations are performed using a finite volume method of computational fluid dynamics. The predicted discharge curves for various temperatures show good agreement with published experimental data, and are essentially identical to results published for one-dimensional models. The detailed two-dimensional flow simulations show that the electrolyte is replenished from the cell head space predominantly through the …

Development Of A New Electrodeposition Process For Plating Of Zn-Ni-X (X = Cd, P) Alloys: Permeation Characteristics Of Zn-Ni-Cd Ternary Alloys, A. Durairajan, B. S. Haran, Ralph E. White, Branko N. Popov

Faculty Publications

It is shown that an electrodeposited Zn-Ni-Cd alloy coating produced from sulfate electrolyte inhibits the discharge of hydrogen on carbon steel. The newly developed ternary alloys have approximately ten times higher corrosion resistance when compared to a Zn-Ni alloy. Hydrogen permeation characteristics of Zn-Ni-Cd alloy coatings were studied and compared with those of a bare and a Zn-Ni alloy coated steel. The transfer coefficient, a, exchange current density, io, thickness dependent adsorption-absorption rate constant, k0, recombination rate constant, k3, surface hydrogen coverage, θH, were obtained by applying a mathematical model to experimental results. Alloys obtained from baths containing higher concentration …

Modeling Lithium Intercalation Of A Single Spinel Particle Under Potentiodynamic Control, Dong Zhang, Branko N. Popov, Ralph E. White Jan 2000

Modeling Lithium Intercalation Of A Single Spinel Particle Under Potentiodynamic Control, Dong Zhang, Branko N. Popov, Ralph E. White

Faculty Publications

A mathematical model is presented for the lithium intercalation of a single spinel particle as a microelectrode under the stimulus of a cyclic linear potential sweep. The model includes both lithium diffusion within the particle and kinetics at the particle/electrolyte interface. The model is used to predict that peak current densities depend linearly on the scan rate to a certain power with a constant term, which is different from the predicted peak current density for a conventional redox system.

Shrinking Core Model For The Discharge Of A Metal Hydride Electrode, Venkat R. Subramanian, Harry J. Ploehn, Ralph E. White Jan 2000

Shrinking Core Model For The Discharge Of A Metal Hydride Electrode, Venkat R. Subramanian, Harry J. Ploehn, Ralph E. White

Faculty Publications

A shrinking core model is presented for the galvanostatic discharge of a metal hydride particle. A quantitative criterion for when the shrinking core can be completely neglected or approximated by a pseudosteady-state solution is presented. The effect of shrinking of the core on the discharge behavior of a metal hydride particle is also studied.

In Vitro Mutagenesis For Structure/Function Studies Of The Bacteriophage T4 Rega Protein And The Murine Ahr Protein, Estel Rick Barbour Jan 2000

In Vitro Mutagenesis For Structure/Function Studies Of The Bacteriophage T4 Rega Protein And The Murine Ahr Protein, Estel Rick Barbour

MUSC Theses and Dissertations

The bacteriophage T4 regA protein translationally represses over 30 T4 early genes, including the regA gene, by binding to the translation initiation region of the T4 mRNAs (Karam et al., 1981). Although the recognition sequence has been at least partially characterized in a number regA sensitive mRNAs, there is no consensus sequence or structural feature that is recognized by regA in all transcripts (Winter et al., 1987; Webster et al., 1989; Unnithan et al., 1990). Recent studies have identified an RNA binding site on regA protein, but there remains a large gap in our understanding of how regA protein functions …

Variation In Boll Weevil (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) Captures In Pheromone Traps Arising From Wind Speed Moderation By Brush Lines, Thomas W. Sappington, Dale W. Spurgeon Jan 2000

Variation In Boll Weevil (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) Captures In Pheromone Traps Arising From Wind Speed Moderation By Brush Lines, Thomas W. Sappington, Dale W. Spurgeon

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Paired trap lines of Þve boll weevil pheromone traps each were placed on opposite sides of a brush line at six different sites on a plantation in the Lower Rio Grande Valley of Texas. Temperature, wind speed, and wind direction were monitored with a nearby weather station. We observed a strong negative relationship between mean daily wind speed and total daily capture of boll weevils. About half of the day-to-day variation in weevil captures was explained by wind speed alone. In addition, our data indicate that much of the variation between traps within days may arise from differences in local …

Production of all classes of wheat grown in the United States totaled 2.5 billion bushels in 1997. Common wheat, Triticum aestivum L. subsp. aestivum, is the primary source of all wheat varieties grown in the United States, with over 200 varieties known and over 100 varieties cultivated. These 100 varieties constitute over 95% of all wheat cultivated in the United States. Five general wheat classes are predominant in the United States: hard red winter, hard red spring, soft red winter, white, and durum.

Improving Warm-Season Forage Grasses Using Selection, Breeding, And Biotechnology, Kenneth P. Vogel Jan 2000

Improving Warm-Season Forage Grasses Using Selection, Breeding, And Biotechnology, Kenneth P. Vogel

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Plant breeding is human-directed evolution. Plant breeders manipulate the genetic resources of a species, i.e., its germplasm, to produce plants that are of increased value to humanity. Although humans have successfully manipulated the genetic resources of plants and animals for several thousand years, the science of genetics was not developed until this century. Breeding work on most forage grasses in the USA did not began until the 1930s and initial work was focused on developing strains that had good establishment capability, persistence, high forage and seed yields, and good insect and disease resistance. These are essential attributes of forages (Burton, …

Response Of Micro-Tom To Low Light, Jonathan M. Frantz, Justin Robinson, Bruce Bugbee Jan 2000

Response Of Micro-Tom To Low Light, Jonathan M. Frantz, Justin Robinson, Bruce Bugbee

Dwarf Crops

Yield is proportional to light absorption, but maximum light cannot always be supplied to crops in either space station production settings or in teaching situations. It is therefore important to determine how crops grow in light-limited conditions. ‘Micro-Tom’ tomato was grown in fluorescent light under shade cloth to provide 100, 200, and 300 µmol m-2 s-1 for 16-h photoperiods at 26/22 °C for 117 days.

Yield and harvest index increased as light increased. There were significant amounts of unripe fruit after 117 days. During ripening, the fraction of dry matter decreases within the fruit.

The higher yield was likely due …

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Karnal bunt of wheat, caused by Tilletia indica, was found in regions of the southwestern United States in 1996. Yield losses due to Karnal bunt are slight, and the greatest threat of Karnal bunt to the U.S. wheat industry is the loss of its export market. Many countries either prohibit or restrict wheat imports from countries with Karnal bunt. In 1997, teliospores morphologically resembling T. indica were isolated from bunted ryegrass seeds and wheat seed washes. Previously developed PCR assays failed to differentiate T. indica from the recently discovered ryegrass pathogen, T. walkeri. The nucleotide sequence of a 2.3 …

Analysis Of Human Skin Emanations By Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry. 2. Identification Of Volatile Compounds That Are Candidate Attractants For The Yellow Fever Mosquito (Aedes Aegypti), Ulrich R. Bernier, Daniel L. Kline, Donald Barnard, Carl Schreck, Richard A. Yost Jan 2000

Analysis Of Human Skin Emanations By Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry. 2. Identification Of Volatile Compounds That Are Candidate Attractants For The Yellow Fever Mosquito (Aedes Aegypti), Ulrich R. Bernier, Daniel L. Kline, Donald Barnard, Carl Schreck, Richard A. Yost

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Volatile compounds emanated from human skin were studied by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/ MS). The purpose of this study was to identify compounds that may be human-produced kairomones which are used for host location by the mosquito, Aedes aegypti (L.). The procedure used to collect volatiles was chosen because of prior knowledge that attractive substances can be transferred from skin to glass by handling. Laboratory bioassays have shown that the residuum on the glass remains attractive to mosquitoes until the compounds of importance evaporate. The sampling and analytical procedures modeled the above-cited process as closely as possible except that the …
