This study took place in the Poroma community, Oropeza province, Chuquisaca Department, in Bolivia, at the so called “red zone”, so named for its extreme poverty. The agricultural system used in this study is unique to the pre-puna area of Bolivia and is located in a meso-thermal valley with wet summers. Reclaiming A Sacred Domain: An Ethnographic Study Of Mormon Women Overcoming The Media-Supported Message Of Acceptable Birth Practice Through Giving Birth At Home, Celeste Elain Witt Jan 2000

Reclaiming A Sacred Domain: An Ethnographic Study Of Mormon Women Overcoming The Media-Supported Message Of Acceptable Birth Practice Through Giving Birth At Home, Celeste Elain Witt

Theses and Dissertations

This study ethnographically explores the experiences of 30 American Mormon women who chose to give birth at home, a practice which differs from the culturally expected birth practice supported by most media birth scenes. The dominant birth practice among American Mormon women aligns with the biomedical birth system nearly universally practiced in the United States.
Recent research indicates that the biomedical model is supported by most media portrayals of birth (Elson 1997b). Mormon women who had given birth at home with a midwife were located and invited to participate. A semi-structured interview guide was used to frame the research process. …

The language anxiety research contains many suggestions for anxiety reduction, one of these being the use of metacognitive language learning strategies. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of a self-monitoring, metacognitive strategy called ASWE on the language anxiety levels of young male and female missionaries in the intensive language learning program at the Missionary Training Center in Provo, Utah. The ASWE …

Parent Dilemmas And Solutions: Perspectives On Work-Family Fit, Eileen M. Brennan, Julie M. Rosenzweig, Alice Myrth Ogilvie, Ann Ward

School of Social Work Faculty Publications and Presentations

The Support for Working Caregivers Project is designed to study the ways in which employed parents whose children have emotional or behavioral disorders fit their work and family responsibilities together. To that end, project investigators have developed a research model of work-family fit by means of an exhaustive literature review of over 350 articles and books on work and family, the secondary data analysis of the North Carolina Family Caregiver Survey (Brennan & Poertner, 1997), and a focus group study with 41 employed parents of children with emotional or behavioral disorders (Rosenzweig, Brennan, & Ogilvie, 1998). The work-family fit research …

Long Run Underperformance Of Initial Public Offerings: An Explanation;, Edward M. Miller Jan 2000

Long Run Underperformance Of Initial Public Offerings: An Explanation;, Edward M. Miller

Department of Economics and Finance Working Papers, 1991-2006

Initial public offerings, even though risky, typically underperform the indices for the first few years after offering. This can be explained by high divergence of opinion raising the initial market price, and by this divergence of opinion declining over time. With time, the valuation of the price setting marginal investor comes closer to the average investor's valuation. This theory also explains why the firms with the greatest underperformance are those with a short operating history, low sales, low prestige underwriters, low institutional ownership, high volatility, high underpricing at the time of issuance, listing on regional exchanges, and those in certain …

Equilibrium With Divergence Of Opinion;, Edward M. Miller Jan 2000

Equilibrium With Divergence Of Opinion;, Edward M. Miller

Department of Economics and Finance Working Papers, 1991-2006

Because the less informed incorrectly estimate asset returns, they anticipate higher returns from their risky investments. They thus over-invest in risky securities. They are rewarded by higher total portfolio returns. Too high a proportion of less informed investors lowers the return on risky assets. Equilibrium requires that the less informed's rate of return equal the informed's. The less informed control a stable equilibrium percentage of total wealth. Because an individual's recent investment experience correlates with his terminal wealth, learning need not reduce the less informed's risky asset exposure. Implications exist for the slope of the return versus systematic risk curve.
