Better-Off Walking: Wyoming V. Houghton Exemplifies What Acevedo Failed To Rectify, Erin Morris Meadows Jan 2000

Better-Off Walking: Wyoming V. Houghton Exemplifies What Acevedo Failed To Rectify, Erin Morris Meadows

University of Richmond Law Review

Over the years the United States Supreme Court attempted to produce bright-line rules governing the automobile exception to the Fourth Amendment's warrant requirement. However, the Court's numerous, often confusing decisions in the past eight decades served only to blur those lines. With each attempt to fashion rules that would be workable for both law enforcement in application and lower courts in administration, citizens' Fourth Amendment rights were narrowed. Each time the Court attempted to clarify a rule, it expanded police power to conduct virtually limitless warrantless searches, consistently eviscerating personal privacy rights. The result is an exception originally intended to …

National Sovereignty And Economic Globalization: An Analysis Of The Role Of The Imf In The Changing World, Olga Vladimirovna Kuznetsova Jan 2000

National Sovereignty And Economic Globalization: An Analysis Of The Role Of The Imf In The Changing World, Olga Vladimirovna Kuznetsova

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Chapter 1 outlines empirical and normative theories of national sovereignty. A comprehensive analysis of the origins and evolution of sovereignty is offered. We suggest that the notion of absolute sovereignty is antiquated and needs scientific reassessment; Chapter 2 discusses theories of the nation-state , while keeping in mind that the conceptualization of the nation-state is intertwined with that of sovereignty; Chapter 3 gives a comprehensive overview of contending theories of globalization ion and definitional confusion associated with the concept. We conceptualize globalization in general and economic globalization in particular; Chapter 4 takes the International Monetary Fund as a case study …

An Empirical Investigation Of Antecedents And Consequences Of Loyalty For Local Casino Customers, Junjian Sui

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The primary purpose of this exploratory study was to examine the antecedents and consequences of loyalty relationship in the gaming industry. Building upon a conceptual framework of loyalty, this study proposed and tested a reduced model to investigate the relationship between the loyal behavior and its three antecedents: confidence, emotion, and switching cost. This study also looked at the variation of customer' spending across service lines relative to customer loyalty. Data were collected from 250 local casino customers who are members of a frequent player program in Las Vegas, Nevada. Multiple regression analysis and t test were employed to analyze …

Re-Visionary Bodies: Feminist/Brechtian Theory In The Plays Of Paula Vogel, Shannon Kay Hammermeister Jan 2000

Re-Visionary Bodies: Feminist/Brechtian Theory In The Plays Of Paula Vogel, Shannon Kay Hammermeister

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Paula Vogel adapts Bertolt Brecht's Verfremdungseffekt, social gestus, historicization and episodic structure in the plays The Baltimore Waltz, And Baby Makes Seven, Hot 'N' Throbbing , and Desdemona: a play about a handkerchief to re-vision constructions of gender, sexuality and feminine desire, to re-define the American theatrical canon, and to create her own gestic, feminist theater. In The Baltimore Waltz, Vogel re-visions the AIDS virus in order to expose and critique stereotypes surrounding AIDS. In And Baby Makes Seven, Vogel engages in a revisionary dialogue with Edward Albee's classic Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? in order to question and reinvent …

Partitioning Of Large Hdl Asic Designs Into Multiple Fpga Devices For Prototyping And Verification, Nilesh V Dhavlikar Jan 2000

Partitioning Of Large Hdl Asic Designs Into Multiple Fpga Devices For Prototyping And Verification, Nilesh V Dhavlikar

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The ASIC (Application specific Integrated Circuit) designs grow continuously bigger and bigger. This causes dramatic increase in the simulation run time. It is very hard to simulate these designs because the simulation time has risen from hours to days and weeks. Hardware Embedded Simulation (HES) is a technology that facilitates incremental design verification of ASICs. The FPGAs (Field Programmable Gate Arrays) can play an important role in ASIC design cycle. But it is not possible to fit an entire ASIC design into a single FPGA device. This problem can be solved by partitioning the given design into multiple small size …

The Problem Areas In Diabetes Scale: A Follow-Up Study, Roslyn M Collins Jan 2000

The Problem Areas In Diabetes Scale: A Follow-Up Study, Roslyn M Collins

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Currently many support and educational services are available for persons with type 2 diabetes mellitus. Yet there are still numerous people with less than desirable long-term outcomes in terms of overall health status. The Problem Areas in Diabetes scale is a newly developed instrument designed to measure emotional distress associated with the diagnosis of diabetes mellitus. Results of its use have been previously published for three different population groups. The primary focus of this study was to describe the relationship between the scores on the Problem Areas in Diabetes scale and HbA1C laboratory test results for persons with type 2 …

The Dynamics Of Faith-Based Organizations And Their Effects On Educational Standardization, Patricia Gail Haase Jan 2000

The Dynamics Of Faith-Based Organizations And Their Effects On Educational Standardization, Patricia Gail Haase

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Remnants of Christian tradition exist in American culture although we live in a pluralistic society. Faith-based schools seek to restore elements of the Christian tradition, believing those values essential for their children. Some in the greater community look to such schools for elements and practices to translate and apply into the greater systems; Private faith-based education is considered overall successful, but there are problems that warrant discussion. Most of the dynamics are typical of all organizations, but perhaps not expected because of the moral representation. Others dynamics are unique or exaggerated in faith-based organizations; Non-profit organizations, including faith-based, exist to …

Be An American Reconstructioneer Of Culture, John Sikula Jan 2000

Be An American Reconstructioneer Of Culture, John Sikula

Mid-Western Educational Researcher

In this presentation the author argues that improvement in schooling and teacher education in the United States will be successful to the extent that educators establish via research and practice and make known to the public and to budget controlling authorities the clear relationships which exist between investment in education and productive citizenship. Until educators become more proactive, demanding, political, and willing to serve as American Reconstructioneers of Culture (ARCs), our educational institutions will continue to drift with a tide of mediocrity as resources flow to other more viable and vocal areas.

Traditional Vs. "Resampling" Approaches To Statistical Inferences Regarding Correlation Coefficients, Thomas R. Knapp, Gerald L. Noblitt, Sunanta Viragoontavan Jan 2000

Traditional Vs. "Resampling" Approaches To Statistical Inferences Regarding Correlation Coefficients, Thomas R. Knapp, Gerald L. Noblitt, Sunanta Viragoontavan

Mid-Western Educational Researcher

With the ever-increasing use of computers in data analysis, there has been a movement to abandon traditional parametric approaches, with all of their restrictive assumptions, in favor of computer-intensive nonparametric inferential statistical procedures such as the jackknife and the bootstrap that are based upon resampling of the sample data. In this article these techniques are compared and contrasted with the parametric approach, with special emphasis on inferences regarding correlation coefficients.
