Structural Transformation And Economic Growth In Hong Kong : Another Look At Young's "A Tale Of Two Cities", Hiroyuki Imai Jan 2000

Structural Transformation And Economic Growth In Hong Kong : Another Look At Young's "A Tale Of Two Cities", Hiroyuki Imai

CAPS Working Paper Series

Young (A Tale of Two Cities, 1992 and the Tyranny of Numbers, 1995) demonstrated, based on the data from the 1960s to the 1980s, that the total factor productivity (TFP) growth since the mid-1980s owed much to the establishment of the cross-border division of labor in which Hong Kong relocated manufacturing to the Mainland and provided support and entrepot trade services in the form of service exports. Nevertheless, growth since the 1980s came largely from the declining manufacturing sector. The expanding services sector’s TFP growth, whether tradable or not, has been low. Hong Kong’s annual TFP growth rate dropped below …

A Case Study Of Economic Ecology : The Hong Kong Economy's Plunge Into A Deep Recession In 1998, Lok Sang Ho Jan 2000

A Case Study Of Economic Ecology : The Hong Kong Economy's Plunge Into A Deep Recession In 1998, Lok Sang Ho

Centre for Public Policy Studies : CPPS Working Paper Series

This paper argues and provides statistical evidence that the very serious recession that Hong Kong underwent in 1998 was not the direct result of the Asian Financial

Crisis but rather the result of the “ecological consequences" of misguided housing policy adopted by the Hong Kong SAR Government. By selling public housing cheaply to tenants, the attractiveness of Home Ownership Scheme housing was reduced dramatically. Prices declines of HOS housing spread to housing of a more superior quality because the latter depends on HOS owners trading up. Lacking buyers from among HOS owners, the owners of these units could not trade …

Safety Climate And Employee Health Among Blue Collar Workers In Hong Kong And China : Age And Gender Differences, Oi Ling Siu, Lan Donald, David Rosser Phillips, Kwok Hung, Billy She Jan 2000

Safety Climate And Employee Health Among Blue Collar Workers In Hong Kong And China : Age And Gender Differences, Oi Ling Siu, Lan Donald, David Rosser Phillips, Kwok Hung, Billy She

Centre for Public Policy Studies : CPPS Working Paper Series

The present study administers a Chinese version of the Safety Attitude Questionnaire (SAQ) to blue collar Chinese workers in Hong Kong (N=120, 44 males, 66 females) and China (N=313, 83 males, 223 females); it examines relations among safety climate (safety attitudes and communication), work stress (job strains) and safety performance (accident rates and occupational injuries). The study also aims at comparing safety climate and safety performance between older and younger workers, and between male and female workers. The results show that the Chinese SAQ is a moderately reliable instrument; some safety attitude scales are related to accident rates for both …

Jing Huang Jan 2000

Jing Huang

Dissertations from all years

APIAS Research Report

In response to the perceived housing needs of single elderly people, the "Housing for Senior Citizens" Scheme has been developed by the Hong Kong Housing Authority since the mid-1980s to provide shared housing for unrelated elderly people. Under this scheme, they live together in an apartment unit with individual bedrooms, but sharing certain facilities. This group is fairly numerous and, in Hong Kong in 1998, there were about 110,000 elderly people living alone for various reasons, among whom 34,000 were tenants in public housing estates. Despite some advantages, shared living for any age group can however lead to potential problems.

Identical Particle Scattering From A Weakly Coupled Bose-Einstein Condensed Gas, A. Wynveen, A. Setty, A. Howard, J. W. Halley, C. E. Campbell

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

We calculate the scattering states and cross sections for a Bose-Einstein condensed dilute gas trapped in a spherical square well of finite depth. The interactions are treated in the scattering length approximation. We solve the Gross-Pitaevskii equation and the Bogoliubov equations for bound and scattering states. The results show that there are transparency effects reminiscent of those conjectured to occur for strongly coupled systems. When incident particle wavelengths λ are comparable to the well size a, exchange induced transparency enhancement is dramatic only for particular combinations of well depth, interaction strength, and particle number. For particles with large momenta (a/λ≫1),however, …

Development Of Magnetism In Strongly Correlated Cerium Systems: Non-Kondo Mechanism For Moment Collapse, Eric Collins, Nicholas Kioussis, Say Lim, Bernard Cooper

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

We present an ab initio-based method which gives clear insight into the interplay between the band-f hybridization, the band-f Coulomb exchange, and the crystal-field interactions, as the degree of 4f localization is varied across a series of strongly correlated cerium systems. The predictions for the ordered magnetic moments, magnetic structure, and ordering temperatures are in excellent agreement with experiment, including the occurrence of a moment collapse of non-Kondo origin. In contrast, spin- and orbitally polarized ab initio density functional calculations and local density approximation +U calculations fail to predict, even qualitatively, the trend of the unusual magnetic properties.

Office Rent Determinants During Market Decline And Recovery, Barrett A. Slade Jan 2000

Office Rent Determinants During Market Decline And Recovery, Barrett A. Slade

Faculty Publications

This article empirically examines office rent determinants in distinct periods of a market cycle. The study uses a dataset of office properties located in a large metropolitan area and spanning a six-year period. During this period, office rents experienced a significant decline and recovery. A time-varying parameter rent index identifies three distinct periods of the cycle: decline, trough and recovery. Tests of structural change conclude that market participants value the determinants of office rents differently during the periods. A microexamination of each rent determinant over the periods of the market cycle provides a greater understanding of how rents vary over …

Interstate Highway Travelers, Timeshares And Coastal Resorts--Are They Related?, Simon P. Attle, James D. Bigley

Visions in Leisure and Business

Interstate highways provide access to virtually every region of the contiguous United States. While destination oriented travelers may or may not make stops in intermediate regions, those travelers do form images of non-destination regions and may be enticed to make leisure-based stops in regions they deem to be "attractive." Hence, understanding the behavior of interstate travelers is of great importance to tourism- and leisure-based endeavors located in traditional "drive-through" interstate highway corridors. This paper presents the findings of a study based on coastal Georgia Interstate 95 travelers that utilized side-trip behavior and non-destination attractiveness variables as components of a predictive …
