Journal of Music Theory Pedagogy

Gary Karpinski, Aural Skills Acquisition: The Development of Listening, Reading, and Performing Skills in College-Level Musicians. Oxford University Press, 2000. Reviewed by David Butler. The book makes an ironic first impression. When you pick it up initially, you can't help thinking that its massive title (truncated from this point on to Aural Skills Acquisition) seems misplaced on anoctavo-sized book, not quite two centimeters thick. But the title is much more appropriate than you first suspect.Aural Skills Acquisition is not just one more aural skills manual, filled to the edges with specimens for sight-singing and dictation. Rather, its focus is the …

Environmentally Friendly Ranching? An Interview On The High Desert, Lisa Johnson

Animal Law Review

The following is an interview with Doc Hatfield about his views on raising cattle and his association with Oregon Country Beef, a cooperative organization that his wife, Connie, helped start in 1986. Doc was on his cell phone while we talked, as he and Connie were on their way to Portland from their High Desert Ranch in Brothers, Oregon to give a talk to an agricultural group. Connie was driving while Doc and I spoke. They have a rule against driving and talking on the phone at the same time. I agreed that was probably a good policy.

Feedlots -- Rural America's Sewer, Marilyn Lee Nardo

Manure spills poison rivers, lakes, and ponds, seep into groundwater, causing fishkills, human disease, and death. The United States Environmental Protection Agency, reports that AFOs are a primary factor in the impairment of forty percent of the nation's waterways. Despite these conditions, there are no federal standards for the storage, application, or management of animal waste. Animal Custody Disputes: A Growing Crack In The "Legal Thinghood" Of Nonhuman Animals, Barbara Newell

Animal Law Review

Despite the traditional view of animals as mere chattels, courts are increasingly viewing animals as more than "things," recognizing the intrinsic value of animal companions. With the help of organizations such as the Animal Legal Defense Fund, case law, local ordinances, and popular attitudes are changing, reflecting the understanding that animals have the capacity to live full mental and emotional lives. This essay tracks these changes, arguing that the time has come to recognize a different legal status for companion animals.

Seasonal And Spatial Variation Of Subgrade Response, Mustaque Hossain, Stefan Romanoschi, Andrew J. Gisi

Civil Engineering Faculty Publications - Archive

Temperature, subgrade moisture content, and Falling Weight Defleetometer (FWD)-deflection data were collected monthly on four asphalt pavement test sections in Kansas for a year. The subgrade moduli were baekealeulated using the elastic layer theory. It was found that for almost all sites, the monthly variation in subgrade moisture content was not very significant over the seasons. The patterns of subgrade response, in terms of subgrade moduli versus time, simulated sine-shaped forms signifying a possible temperature effect. Higher variabilities across the site were associated with the extreme temperature conditions, usually very low or high average pavement temperatures. In all cases, the …

Remote Sensing Of Fractures And Karstic Infiltration Features In The Kankakee River Basin Near Bourbonnais, Illinois, Rebecca Vershaw

Honors Capstones

The Kankakee River in Illinois is structurally influenced and not channelized as it is in Indiana. Therefore, structural data taken from outcrops along the river basin and from remote sensing data can be used to infer the groundwater flow direction along the river. Karst topography is associated with the Kankakee River Basin near Bourbonnais, Illinois. It it thought that the recharge and discharge of the river segment is probably dependent on rainfall and thus, the karst conduits in the region. Pollutatns can also be distributed through karst conduits and enter the river this way. Identifying the relationship and orientation of …
