The Twilight Of Comity, Spencer Weber Waller Jan 2000

The Twilight Of Comity, Spencer Weber Waller

Faculty Publications & Other Works

This article analyzes one of the most contentious issues over the past fifty years in international economic law-the extent to which a nation may apply its law on an extra territorial basis and the limits, if any, posed by the doctrine of international comity. This article, based on Professor Waller's paper presented at the 1999 Wolfgang Friedmann conference, examines the reasons why the doctrine of international comity once represented the primary battleground for conflict over the extent of permissible extraterritoriality in United States antitrust law but no longer represents the forefront of current thought on this important issue. The article …

Novel Role Of Nitric Oxide In Pancreatic Signal Transduction, Rhykka L. Panozzo Jan 2000

Novel Role Of Nitric Oxide In Pancreatic Signal Transduction, Rhykka L. Panozzo

Honors Capstones

The exocrine pancreas’ function is to synthesize and secrete a battery of enzymes in response to secretagogues. Nitric oxide (NO) is a biological messenger in a variety of tissue types, eliciting an impressive variety of biological responses. Biosynthesis of NO in the pancreas is catalyzed by two known nitric oxide synthase isoforms, NOS(I) and NOS(II). However, the role of NO in secretion from pancreatic acinar cells has been unclear. The aim of this study was to determine the effects of nitric oxide on pancreatic secretion as well as its effects on enzymes specific to the ERK signaling cascade, which leads …

Portraiture In Italian Renaissance Art : A Celebration Of Marriage, Lineage, And Status, Suze Emma Tegert Jan 2000

Portraiture In Italian Renaissance Art : A Celebration Of Marriage, Lineage, And Status, Suze Emma Tegert

Honors Capstones

In recent Art Historical writing, male and female Renaissance portraiture is frequently discussed as two separate categories, which assume different functions and purposes, based on the position of men and women within Renaissance society. This paper, in particular, analyzes the feminist theory of the function of female portraiture, which sees portraits of women as objects of the male gaze, created in a society in which women’s claims were more limited than they were for men, and women are seen as passive objects of an extreme patriarchy. Here, a closer look is taken at more recent research, which supports a view …

Forensic Accounting In America: A Case Study, Matthew Carlson Jan 2000

Forensic Accounting In America: A Case Study, Matthew Carlson

Honors Capstones

As businesses continue to grow, they open themselves up to the possibility of fraud. During an average year, fraud can cost employers anywhere between $200 and $400 million dollars. A fraud can be extremely devastating to a company, by destroying customer confidence or even cause bankruptcy. The first part of the thesis is devoted to describing fraud, how to deter it from happening, and how to deal with it if it should happen. The second part of the thesis is a case study on the Cendant Corporation. This is a perfect example of how a company is affected when the …

A Comparison Of Accounting Practices Of The United States And Mexico, Kenya Watts

Honors Capstones

With increased globalization the need for more harmonious accounting principles intensifies. Since hope to spend some time working as an accountant in Mexico, he purpose of this project was to acquaint myself with the structure of Mexico's accounting body. I set out to learn and understand the structure ofthe standard-setting body, the certification requirements, the GAAP hierarchy, the conceptual framework and the significant accounting differences. I approached my research using books, the Internet, and periodicals. I was able to locate an abundance of information on Mexico as a whole but accounting related information was more difficult to come by. I …
