The Zen Of Corporate Capital Structure Neutrality, Herwig J. Schlunk Nov 2000

The Zen Of Corporate Capital Structure Neutrality, Herwig J. Schlunk

Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications

Given the current tax rate structure - where the marginal tax rate of some persons exceeds the corporate tax rate and the marginal tax rate of others is exceeded by it - corporations are generally well advised to employ both debt and equity in their capital structures. The former will be held by low tax rate taxpayers and will serve to lower the effective aggregate tax rate6 on the corporation's taxable income. The latter will be held by high tax rate taxpayers and will serve to keep low the effective aggregate tax rate on the corporation's unrecognized economic income (such …

Lack Of Cd4+ T Cells Does Not Affect Induction Of Cd8+ T-Cell Immunity Against Encephalitozoon Cuniculi Infection, Magali Moretto, Lori Casciotti, Brigit Durell, Imtiaz A. Khan Nov 2000

Lack Of Cd4+ T Cells Does Not Affect Induction Of Cd8+ T-Cell Immunity Against Encephalitozoon Cuniculi Infection, Magali Moretto, Lori Casciotti, Brigit Durell, Imtiaz A. Khan

Dartmouth Scholarship

Cell-mediated immunity has been reported to play an important role in defense against Encephalitozoon cuniculi infection. Previous studies from our laboratory have underlined the importance of cytotoxic CD8+ T lymphocytes (CTL) in survival of mice infected with E. cuniculi. In the present study, immune response against E. cuniculi infection in CD4+T-cell-deficient mice was evaluated. Similar to resistant wild-type animals, CD4−/− mice were able to resolve E. cuniculi infection even at a very high challenge dose (5 × 107 spores/mouse). Tissues from infected CD4−/−mice did not exhibit higher parasite loads in comparison to …

Cultural Policy In Singapore: Negotiating Economic And Socio-Cultural Agendas, Lily Kong Nov 2000

Cultural Policy In Singapore: Negotiating Economic And Socio-Cultural Agendas, Lily Kong

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

In this paper, I examine the role of cultural policy in a newly industrialised economy, which is at the same time a state with a short history and only nascent beginnings in nation-building and efforts to construct a distinctive cultural identity. Using Singapore as the site of analyses, develop an understanding of the intersection between the economic and socio-cultural agendas behind cultural development policies. I illustrate the hegemony of the economic, supported by the ideology and language of pragmatism and globalisation. At the same time, I explore the reception of and attempts to negotiate (and at times, contest) state policies …

Ccd Speckle Observations Of Binary Stars From The Southern Hemisphere. Ii. Measures From The Lowell-Tololo Telescope During 1999, Elliott P. Horch, Otto Franz, Zoran Ninkov

Articles

Speckle observations of 145 double stars and suspected double stars are presented and discussed. On the basis of multiple observations, a total of 280 position angle and separation measures are determined, as well as 23 high-quality nondetections. All observations were taken with the (unintensified) Rochester Institute of Technology fast-readout CCD camera mounted on the Lowell-Tololo 61 cm telescope at the Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory during 1999 October. We find that the measures, when judged as a whole against ephemeris positions of binaries with very well-known orbits, have root mean square deviations of (1.8+/- 0.3) degrees in position angle and (13+/-2) …

My Journey Through The World In Happiness And Sorrow, Ida Mooser Hattemer, Theodore Alphonse Hattemer

Swiss American Historical Society Review

This is my mother's story of her Swiss family's immigration from Switzerland to Kentucky in 1895, and the story of her own American family. My mother, Ida Mooser Hattemer, dearly loved her native Switzerland, her family, and her Swiss relatives whom she talked about so much that her children felt as if they knew them intimately.

Black & White Tv: An Omaha Case Study Of The Role Of Race In Local Television News Employment., Laura Charlotte Shelton

Student Work

This study is a qualitative inquiry into the role race plays in hiring and promoting in the Omaha television market. By interviewing news directors and on-air talent, the researcher attempted to develop some bases for perceptions of race on the job. There also was an attempt to gather recommendations for ways to change the role of race in TV news. The responses were organized into themes that best summarized the feelings of the respondents. In the area of diversity in hiring, news employees talked about themes of competence and the negative impact race-based hiring can have. The themes that emerged …

Correlation Of A Social Skills Self-Rating Survey And A Teacher Rating Inventory For Students At A Residential School For The Deaf, James Thomas Haley Nov 2000

Correlation Of A Social Skills Self-Rating Survey And A Teacher Rating Inventory For Students At A Residential School For The Deaf, James Thomas Haley

Student Work

Students aged 12 to 15 at a Midwestern residential school for the deaf completed the Matson Evaluation of Social Skills for Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing Youngsters (MESSY- DHH). Faculty at the school completed the Meadow Kendall Social Emotional Assessment Inventory (SEAI) to rate the behavior of the same students. Pearson’s correlations were conducted to determine if relationships existed between scores on the MESSY-DHH and the SEAI. Results indicated inconsistent correlations between scores on the MESSY-DHH and individual scale scores on the SEAI.

Ant Diversity Between Two Methods Of Coffee Farming In The San Luis Valley, November 2000, Joanna Leachman Nov 2000

Ant Diversity Between Two Methods Of Coffee Farming In The San Luis Valley, November 2000, Joanna Leachman

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

Due to herbaceous, fungal, or insectivorous pests, coffee farms are sometimes treated with chemicals throughout the year to eliminate these problems. However, this can impact beneficial insects, like predaceous ants. Using tuna and honey as bait, I captured ants on the ground of three organic and three inorganic coffee farms. I also measured the amount of ground vegetation at each site. I found a significantly higher diversity of both total and predaceous ant species on organic farms (p < 0.001, p <0.005). The amount of ground vegetation on organic farms was also significantly higher (p < 0.0001).

Proactive Legislation And The First Amendment, Stuart Minor Benjamin Nov 2000

Proactive Legislation And The First Amendment, Stuart Minor Benjamin

Michigan Law Review

It is a commonplace that the world is changing rapidly, with whole sectors of the economy being transformed. New forms of communication, like the World Wide Web, e-mail, and satellite television, have risen from obscurity to ubiquity in less than a decade. The speed of these changes has led some to express concern about the ability of governments to respond. The fear is that governments cannot keep up with developments as they occur and thus get hopelessly behind. The solution, according to some, is for the government to act proactively - before a harm has arisen, so that the government …
