The Large Cosmological Constant Approximation To Classical And Quantum Gravity: Model Examples, Rodolfo Gambini, Jorge Pullin Nov 2000

The Large Cosmological Constant Approximation To Classical And Quantum Gravity: Model Examples, Rodolfo Gambini, Jorge Pullin

Faculty Publications

We have recently introduced an approach for studying perturbatively classical and quantum canonical general relativity. The perturbative technique appears to preserve many of the attractive features of the non-perturbative quantization approach based on Ashtekar's new variables and spin networks. With this approach one can find perturbatively classical observables (quantities that have vanishing Poisson brackets with the constraints) and quantum states (states that are annihilated by the quantum constraints). The relative ease with which the technique appears to deal with these traditionally hard problems opens up several questions concerning how relevant the results produced can possibly be. Among the questions is …

Suspensions Thermal Noise In The Ligo Gravitational Wave Detector, Gabriela González Nov 2000

Suspensions Thermal Noise In The Ligo Gravitational Wave Detector, Gabriela González

Faculty Publications

We present a calculation of the maximum sensitivity achievable by the LIGO gravitational wave detector in construction, due to limiting thermal noise of its suspensions. We present a method to calculate thermal noise that allows the prediction of the suspension thermal noise in all of its six degrees of freedom, from the energy dissipation due to the elasticity of the suspension wires. We show how this approach encompasses and explains previous ways to approximate the thermal noise limit in gravitational wave detectors. We show how this approach can be extended to more complicated suspensions to be used in future LIGO …

Long-Term Regulation Of Neuronal High-Affinity Glutamate And Glutamine Uptake In Aplysia, J Levenson, S Endo, L S. Kategaya, R I. Fernandez, D G. Brabham, J Chin, J H. Byrne, A Eskin

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

An increase in transmitter release accompanying long-term sensitization and facilitation occurs at the glutamatergic sensorimotor synapse of Aplysia. We report that a long-term increase in neuronal Glu uptake also accompanies long-term sensitization. Synaptosomes from pleural-pedal ganglia exhibited sodium-dependent, high-affinity Glu transport. Different treatments that induce long-term enhancement of the siphon-withdrawal reflex, or long-term synaptic facilitation increased Glu uptake. Moreover, 5-hydroxytryptamine, a treatment that induces long-term facilitation, also produced a long-term increase in Glu uptake in cultures of sensory neurons. The mechanism for the increase in uptake is an increase in the V(max) of transport. The long-term increase in Glu uptake …

Renaissance Courtesy And Book Vi Of The Faerie Queene, Matthew S. Martini Nov 2000

Renaissance Courtesy And Book Vi Of The Faerie Queene, Matthew S. Martini

Dissertations and Theses

Book VI of Edmund Spenser's The Faerie Queene, with its chivalric and pastoral characteristics, has confounded critics for several generations. This thesis provides a chronological reading of Book VI that addresses many of its problems in the context of conduct manuals such as Baldassare Castiglione's The Book of the Courtier and Stefano Guazzo's Civile Conversation. Rather than dismiss many of the tensions and contradictions in the text, this study seeks to embrace them by interpreting them with Mikhail Bakhtin's theory of dialogism as expressed in The Dialogic Imagination.

In chapter one, connections are made between the opening …
