Tetrops Praeusta (L.) (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae), A Potential Pest?, Henry Howden, Anne Howden

Thanks to Richard G. Dearborn we were able to examine the collection of beetles of the Maine Forest Service, Department of Conservation, Augusta. Our attention was directed to two small (4-6 mm) cerambycids by their collector, Kimberly Foss. The specimens are cylindrical, black bodied with tan, black tipped, setose elytra and tan legs. One specimen had been taken sitting on a maple leaf at Portland, Maine, and the other was collected by sweeping at Augusta, Maine. Subsequently an additional two specimens were collected in our Malaise trap on the Dearborn property 10 mi. S. Mt. Vernon, Maine.

Jeepiulus Flavus Gen. N And Sp. N. (Hemiptera, Auchenorrhyncha, Cicadellidae) From Mato Grosso And Rondonia, Brazil, Rodney Ramiro Cavichioli

Jeepiulus flavus gen. n and sp. n. (Hemiptera, Auchenorrhyncha, Cicadellidae) is described from Mato Grosso and Rondonia, Brazil. This genus is similar to Alocha Melichar and Albiniana Cavichioli, however, Jeepiulus gen. n. has its head produced and male genitalia with paraphyses.

A Preliminary List Of Neuroptera From The Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Lionel A. Stange

The following species of Neuroptera have been identified from the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The names are provided as part of the All Taxa Biodiversity Inventory of the park (ATBI). The material was studied in 2000 at the Natural History Museum at Sugarlands Headquarters (GRSM). Additional material was obtained from two Malaise traps run for over a year (1999-2000) at the Twin Creeks Science Center and specimens obtained by the author during the first week of September, 2000. New Record For Tesarius Rakovic In South America (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae: Aphodiinae: Psammodiini), Paul E. Skelley

The genus Tesarius Rakovic (1981) is an interesting group of wingless, nearly eyeless (yet probably functionally blind), sand dune-dwelling scarabs. There are presently 5 species in the genus, T. sulcipennis (Lea 1904) from Tasmania and 4 species in western North America. One of these native North American species, T. caelatus (LeConte 1857) has been found in Britain (Johnson 1975). The genus is reviewed by Rakovic (1981, 1984), who provides a key to species.

Wolfniana Gen. N. And Redescription Of Wolfniana Limbatula (Osborn, 1926) Comb. N. (Hemiptera, Auchenorrhyncha, Cicadellidae), Rodney Ramiro Cavichioli

Wolfniana gen.n. is proposed to include Cicadella limbatula Osborn, 1926. This species has a head that is more produced than in species of Rotigonalia Young, 1977 and the paraphyses are not V-shaped as in R. concedula (Melichar, 1926), and three new species described by Cavichioli (2000).

Combined Loading Of Composite Box-Beams With Linearized Differential Equations Of Motion, Michael Alan Dupuis

The purpose of the following analysis is to develop a method for determining vertical, horizontal, and torsional displacements of arbitrarily laminated, cantilevered composite box-beam under static, transverse loading. Small deflections are assumed and the differential equations of motion have been linearized for ease of calculation. The Smith and Chopra stiffness matrix is used in the equations of motion, and software was written to solve for the stiffness matrix elements. Comparisons are made with bending slope solutions from previously published results, and the presented analysis is compared to empirical results of a composite box-beam under tip loading. The Global Diffusion of the Internet Project was initiated in 1997 to study the diffusion and absorption of the Internet to, and within, many diverse countries. This research has resulted in an ongoing series of reports and articles that have developed an analytic framework for evaluating the Internet within countries and applied it to more than 25 countries. The legal system should rely much more than it now does on statistical evidence. It should be cautious about the judgments of experts, who make predictable cognitive errors. Like everyone else, experts have a tendency to blunder about risk, a point that has been shown to hold for doctors, whose predictions significantly err in the direction of optimism. We present new evidence that individual doctors' judgments about the ordinary standard of care are incorrect and excessively optimistic. We also show how this evidence bears on legal determinations of negligence, by doctors and others.

To measure attitudes toward justice in access to health care services in managed care plans in a convenience sample of medical professionals at Clark Memorial Hospital in Jeffersonville, Indiana. Methods. A sixteen item, self-administered instrument based on Morreim's four concepts of justice in health care access was administered to 147 health care professionals, representing physicians, allied health, and hospital administration. SPSS was used to analyze the results. Results. The attitudes of the respondents were negative toward managed care. They did not feel that managed care had been a positive development in the United States or that managed care had improved …

Particles are a vital component of many Asian languages. Nonetheless, they typically receive little treatment in grammatical studies. This may be due in part to the theoretical orientations of generative grammar which, intentionally or accidentally, can tend to skew data collection and analysis toward theory-predicted sentence alignments (Chu 1998, Chan 1999). In addition, the exact meaning and usage of many particles can be anything but obvious. Even educated native speakers often claim that particles are not “true words” and have no “real” meaning. Influence Of Habitat Use Patterns On Cooperative Breeding In The Brown-Headed Nuthatch, Albert Herb Jr., D. Brent Burt

Bulletin of the Texas Ornithological Society

We document the habitat use patterns of the Brown-headed Nuthatch (Sitta pusilla). We describe how its habitat use patterns contribute to ecological constraints that may maintain cooperative breeding in this species. Brown-headed Nuthatches are pine specialists. In particularly, Brown-headed Nuthatches forage primarily on the bark and cones in the top distal portions of mature pines. Breeding territories differ considerably in pine density. We suggest that differences in pine density are an indicator of habitat and territory quality. We predict that additional studies will document that helpers are more common on relatively small territories with high tree densities and in habitats …
