By banning antipersonnel landmines, States committed themselves to ending the production, use, stockpiling and proliferation of this weapon. They also committed themselves to providing assistance to those who have been victims or who still suffer from the effects of landmines. Despite the efforts first made and the declarations of intention, much remains to be done in order that the States can honour their obligations as far as assistance is concerned.

A problem arises when different printing systems are used to print images. Different systems have considerably different contrast and resolution capabilities while an individual printing system might have a low resolution capability, the system may have the ability to render low contrast detail. Similarly, if a printing system has a high resolution capability, it does not necessarily mean that such a system has the ability to render low contrast detail well. Knowing this, music can become an indispensable part of outdoor education programs because music summons the basic connections that sustain human life: our fellow humans and the planet Earth. Recognizing nature as the point of origin for sounds in music is to truly touch the roots of music. Recognizing music as a form of communication for humans is to touch the roots of culture. Thus, we have a triad of influences among people, nature and music. This triad is worth exploring in outdoor education programs because of what it can teach participants about themselves and about their world.

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper presents a simplified window glass design procedure (SWGDP) as an alternative to the comprehensive window glass design procedure described in ASTM E 1300, `Standard practice for determining the load resistance of glass in buildings.' Although ASTM E 1300 provides a technically robust treatment of the strength of window glass and window glass constructions, architects and engineers will find ASTM E 1300 difficult to use. The SWGDP presented herein uses the same failure prediction methodology to characterize the annealed window glass strength that underlies ASTM E 1300. At each stop one is compelled to feel compassion for the citizens of the far away region, and for those in our own highly developed nation. Although technologically advanced, the US is not immune to the same ecological, political, and racial predicaments. The narrator illuminates this immunity using rhetoric laced with American pride.

Collaborative Agent Design (CAD) Research Center

This report describes work performed by CDM Technologies Inc. in conjunction with the Collaborative Agent Design (CAD) Research Center of California Polytechnic State University (Cal Poly), San Luis Obispo, for the Office of Naval Research (ONR), on the SEAWAY experimental system for planning, gaming and executing maritime logistic operations from a sea base. SEAWAY incorporates three fundamental concepts that distinguish it from existing (i.e., legacy) command and control applications. First, it is a collaborative system in which computer-based agents assist human operators by monitoring, analyzing and reasoning about events in near real-time. Paper Engineering Senior Theses

Clean pulp is essential to the optimum operation of any paper machine. The hydrocyclone is the most space, energy and cost efficient method to remove both heavy and light contaminants from a papermaking slurry. The efficiency of a hydrocyclone cleaner increases as the amount of removed contaminants increases. An efficient hydrocyclone allows the least amount of usable fiber to be lost in the cleaning process. Bradley devised a mathematical model to measure the efficiency of a hydrocyclone, and it is still the accepted model today. Several problems may exist with the Bradley Model as it applies to paper making slurries. …
