Part Ii, Strategic Management For Mine Action Operations: A Case For Government- Industry Partnering, Alan Childress, Pete Owen
The Journal of Conventional Weapons Destruction
Directed mainly at policy makers and leaders in mine-plagued nations and government and non-government mine action planners, the article argues for holistic mine action strategies, coordinated priorities and best management practices. The authors establish the need for nations to rake charge of their mine action organizations and present strategic management methodology to implement self-determination concepts. They insist that humanitarian demining must start with the end in mind, an integrated and nationally prioritized requirements analysis of each of the mine action areas: mine awareness, mine field assessment and surveys, mine and UXO clearance, victim assistance and information management. Explosives and mines from WWI and WWII still turn up on European and Asian construction sites, backyard gardens, beaches, wildlife preserves and former military training ground. For most countries, these discoveries are not isolated incidents but are the result of hastily cleared ammunition dumps, training ground, bombings and mine fields from these wars. In the United Kingdom, over 20 percent of the entire landmass has, at one time, been used for military training. This military training has resulted in uncovered ordnance that dates from cannon and musket balls to modern weapons. Many of the older U.K. ranges can contain an …

Dosso Dossi, Garofalo, And The Costabili Polyptych: Imaging Spiritual Authority, Giancarlo Fiorenza

Recent debate over the chronology of the Costabili polyptych, painted for the high altar of S. Andrea in Ferrara, has overlooked the broader question of interpretation regarding its genesis following Ferrara's participation in the Cambrai Wars. This essay analyzes how the altarpiece negotiates the concept of "just war" while communicating God's peace and salvation. Especially relevant to interpreting the imagery are the writings of Andrea Baura and Antonio Meli, two contemporary Augustinian friars from S. Andrea, who offered new ways of reading Scripture to overcome Ferrara's historical and spiritual conflicts.

“The Muhlenberg County [Kentucky] Heritage” was published four times a year by the Muhlenberg County Genealogical Society in Greenville, Kentucky, from 1978 to 2001. The cover title sometimes appears as “The Heritage.” The publication’s purpose was to support the society and to publish information about the genealogy, culture, and history of Muhlenberg County. A separate annual index was printed each year for volumes 1-14. Afterwards, each issue was indexed separately. Generally, the index is to surnames only.

The Future Of Environmental Rule Of Law Litigation: Sixth Annual Lloyd K. Garrison Lecture On Environmental Law, A. Dan Tarlock
Pace Environmental Law Review
"Rule of law litigation" is one of the most, if not the, most distinctive features of environmental law. "Rule of law" litigation seeks to convince courts to create new environmental protection rights and duties by strictly construing statutes to hold that an agency action that degrades the environment is ultra vires, by creatively reading statutes to find new substantive or by declaring strict procedural duties in broad delegations of agency discretion. The article asks whether this model of environmental law making can continue to sustain itself as environmental law moves into the second generation. This is an important, if not …

Social And Political Violence In The Medieval Rhineland, Matthew Bryan Gillis

This study is concerned with violence, attitudes toward violence, and how they affected society and politics in the Rhineland during the late twelfth and early thirteenth centuries. It maintains that, through the careful analysis of narrative sources, such as the Dialogus Miraculorum of Caesarius of Heisterbach, and legal sources known as Landfrieden, the attitudes of medieval people toward different forms of violence can be reconstructed, enabling one to understand and to categorize violence from a medieval perspective.
The results of the examination reveal that certain kinds of violence, including feuds, were legally acceptable, while acts of violence outside of …
