Since the Civil Rights Act of 1964, the federal government has played a significant role in reducing invidious discrimination against individuals on the basis of race, religion, color, and national origin. In the wake of even broader state laws against discrimination lie many private organizations treading to stay afloat in what has become a tumultuous sea of clashing constitutional rights. These private organizations justify discriminatory membership policies on the grounds they engage in expressive association protected by the First Amendment, while individuals denied membership to these organizations claim equal protection of the law under the Fourteenth Amendment and under state …

Lifting The Veil: The Arts, Broadcasting And Irish Society, Brian O'Neill

This article examines the role played by broadcasting in Irish artistic and cultural life from independence in 1922 to 1960 with the onset of formal modernization. It examines the cultural context for the arts in early independent Ireland in which a mood of ambivalence and sometimes outright hostility to high culture prevailed. Rather than a profound disjunction between pre- and post-modernizing phases of Irish history, however, this article argues that there were important lines of continuity in cultural experience, in particular middle-class experience of the arts, which continue to inform Irish cultural life up to the present. Defining The Field: Revisiting The Aca 1995 Definition Of Communication Studies, Charles J. Korn, Sherwyn P. Morreale, Don M. Boileau

Journal of the Association for Communication Administration

This article deals with the problem of defining communication studies in higher education. In 1995, the Association for Communication Administration (ACA) convened a summer conference that produced a two-sentence definition of the field of communication. More than 100 conferees voted their unanimous approval of the definition, which was then disseminated nationally and used by communication scholar/teachers for a multiplicity of purposes. Given the potential utility of that definition and the expansion of communication studies since 1995, the present study surveyed ACA's current members to determine whether they are aware the definition exists, how they have used it, and the extent …

Assessing The Perceived Effectiveness Of The Basic Communication Course: An Examination Of The Mass-Lecture Format Versus The Self-Contained Format, Timothy S. Todd, Lou Davidson Tillson, Stephen A. Cox, Barbara K. Malinauskas

Journal of the Association for Communication Administration

This article evaluates the most effective and efficient instructional format for basic communication courses. The results of the analysis lend support to the use of the mass-lecture/laboratory format. Although B. Erikson and D. Strommer indicated that feelings of anonymity, common in the large lecture class, diminished motivation, commitment and personal responsibility of the students, this study did not find similar results. Students indicated, across both instructional formats, comparable perceptions of student motivation, teacher nonverbal immediacy and teacher credibility. It appears that the mass-lecture/laboratory format was perceived by students as being as effective as self-contained sections of basic courses.

This article explores the impact of the academic changes in the higher education in the U.S. on the relationship among administrators, chairs and faculty. Times have changed in higher education in the U.S. In the 1960s and 1970s higher education grew rapidly. State and local governments, as well as private donors, willingly and enthusiastically supported higher education. But the Vietnam conflict brought changes in that colleges were often considered the training grounds for protesters as well as escape routes from military conscription. College writing teachers often consider the reading and writing experiences students have had in elementary and high school classes as their only relevant discursive influences. When they do so they risk ignoring what is perhaps the most powerful and ubiquitous form of public discourse and communication in our society: television. This dissertation explores how the pervasive discourse of popular culture on television influences the ways in which incoming college students perceive and engage in writing and reading when they enter a first-year composition course. There are two preliminary things to be stated at the outset of any philosophical consideration of enchantment. First, traditional philosophy has been antagonistic toward the idea of enchantment: as a foundational discipline of reason, philosophy has defined itself in opposition to the non-rational. The main traditions of philosophy have regarded any form of discourse other than that centered in reason as alien, the other, as something which obscures or undermines those procedures which alone can determine knowledge and value. I presume here that enchantment would be considered “non-rational”, and also that such a designation is problematic in a number …

Assessment Of The Repeated Speech Performance As A Pedagogical Tool: A Pilot Study, Mark A. Gring, Jera W. Littlejohn

Basic Communication Course Annual

Realizing the ongoing need to develop pedagogy in public speaking, these researchers investigated the learning achieved by asking students to repeat one of their speech assignments. They assessed the value of this practice from the students' viewpoint as well as the statistical change in performance outcomes. Across the eight competencies evaluated, students' average scores increased significantly on the repeated speech. Students who scored in the lower quartile on the first speech benefited most from the second opportunity. The researchers conclude that allowing students to repeat a speech appears to have pedagogical and practical merit.

The last few decades have seen a torrent of legal commentary supporting gay equality and attacking the punishment, failure to protect, and refusal to affirm gay conduct and identity. William Eskridge, a prominent voice in this fin-de-siecle literature, now draws together and expands on his previous work in Gaylaw: Challenging the Apartheid of the Closet.
