Application Of Computer-Based Technology To The Teaching Of Writing In Spanish As A Foreign Language: A Case Study, Nuria Gago Jan 2000

Application Of Computer-Based Technology To The Teaching Of Writing In Spanish As A Foreign Language: A Case Study, Nuria Gago

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Computers are becoming more and more important in today's world. They are part of every sector of our society, including education. Most of the studies done so far on computer integration with educational purposes focus on the classification, and incorporation, from a theoretical point of view, of Computer Mediated Communication in the class. Unfortunately, very little empirical research has been done concerning the students' perspectives and reactions when introduced to the use of multimedia technology in the classroom. The present project was started in an effort to analyze and observer the reactions of a group of learners when exposed, in …

Attribution: A Political Psychology Perspective On The Democratic Peace., Edward Michael Goldcamp Jan 2000

Attribution: A Political Psychology Perspective On The Democratic Peace., Edward Michael Goldcamp

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Currently there appears to be irrefutable evidence of the existence of a democratic peace. The concept of pacific interaction between democratic nations has become a virtual law in the study of Political Science. Many explanations exist, generally following one of two tracts. There are both structural and normative explanations. The premise of this dissertation is that neither current set of explanations is adequate. Therefore, it is necessary to pursue a third type of explanatory theory. This study examines the role of culture and attribution in foreign policy. The notion of polity similarity is replaced with cultural similarity. I examine the …

Hammer And Hand In The Old South: Artisan Workers In Petersburg, Virginia, 1820-1860., L Diane Barnes Jan 2000

Hammer And Hand In The Old South: Artisan Workers In Petersburg, Virginia, 1820-1860., L Diane Barnes

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Petersburg, Virginia presents a unique opportunity to examine the lives of southern artisan workers in the nineteenth century. Ranked as the forty-ninth most industrialized U.S. city in 1860, Petersburg was home to nearly 3,000 skilled white and free black male workers in the antebellum era. Crossed by five railroads, commerce and industry were the backbone of the city's economy. The tobacco factories, iron foundries, cotton textile mills, and smaller workshops attracted skilled workers from Virginia, other parts of the South, northern states, and even Europe. The industrial activity of Petersburg makes it possible to draw comparisons with existing studies of …

An Examination Of The Significance Of Demographic Characteristics On The Preference Of White American Therapy Clients For Counselors: Their Relationship To Within -Group Differences., Justin Leon Boyce Jan 2000

An Examination Of The Significance Of Demographic Characteristics On The Preference Of White American Therapy Clients For Counselors: Their Relationship To Within -Group Differences., Justin Leon Boyce

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This study examined White clients' preference for counselor characteristics. A paired comparison format was used to generate participants' preferences. The study also examined the relationship of clients' within group differences (i.e., level of racial consciousness, age, educational level) to their preference for counselors. The study found that when asked to indicate a preference between a counselor of similar ethnicity and one of dissimilar ethnicity, clients indicated a preference for a counselor of similar ethnicity. However, when other counselor attributes were included in the choice, a counselor of similar ethnicity was not the primary preference. The study was able to demonstrate …

A Comparison Of Collaborative And Individualistic Problem Solving In Younger And Older Adults On An Everyday Task., Suling Cheng Jan 2000

A Comparison Of Collaborative And Individualistic Problem Solving In Younger And Older Adults On An Everyday Task., Suling Cheng

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Researchers examining everyday problem solving in adulthood have focused mainly on age differences in performance (e.g., Denney & Palmer, 1981). Older adults are often found to be poor problem solvers in comparison to younger adults because older adults use problem-solving strategies that are defined as less effective by researchers. Furthermore, researchers have focused on problem solving as a solitary activity and not as a collaborative activity. In addition, the problem-solving tasks researchers have used to measure everyday problem solving often resemble traditional problem-solving tasks. Thus, attention should be directed toward comparing younger and older adults on ecologically valid collaborative problem-solving …

Educators' Views Of Implementing Direct Instruction Curricula: Connections To Students With Disabilities., Brenda Wilson Jan 2000

Educators' Views Of Implementing Direct Instruction Curricula: Connections To Students With Disabilities., Brenda Wilson

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The purpose of this study was to examine the process of the first year of implementation of Direct Instruction curricula as seen through the eyes of the educators implementing it. The study also attempted to determine if general educators' knowledge and use of Direct Instruction techniques while implementing a published curriculum would translate into more effective practices toward students with disabilities in the general education classroom. Seventeen teachers at a small rural elementary school were studied as they implemented Direct Instruction curricula for the first time. The teachers used the Reading Mastery, Corrective Reading and Language for Learning programs published …

The Effects Of Social Support On Men's Exercise-Related Cardiovascular Reactivity., Daniel Benjamin Hollander Jan 2000

The Effects Of Social Support On Men's Exercise-Related Cardiovascular Reactivity., Daniel Benjamin Hollander

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

A predictor of cardiovascular disease is increased heart rate and blood pressure reactivity to physical tasks. One psychological factor that is associated with a reduced cardiac (i.e., heart rate) and vascular (blood pressure) reactivity has been social support. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to examine the effects of social support on exercise-related CV reactivity. It was hypothesized that participants would demonstrate lower CVR in the Partner Present condition than in the Alone condition and that level of intimacy would be related to CVR. Male participants (N = 32) who were in an enduring romantic relationship (i.e., minimum duration …

Anthropological Differences Between Contraception And Natural Family Planning, Richard J. Fehring, William Kurz Jan 2000

Anthropological Differences Between Contraception And Natural Family Planning, Richard J. Fehring, William Kurz

College of Nursing Faculty Research and Publications

Almost twenty years ago, Pope John Paul II in his apostolic exhortation Familiaris Consortio called on scholars to study the anthropological and moral differences between the recourse to the natural rhythms of a woman’s menstrual cycle (i.e., natural family planning) and contraception (1). Although natural family planning (NFP) and contraception can both be used to prevent pregnancy, there are conspicuous differences between use of natural methods and contraception. Most people, however, have difficulty in distinguishing what the differences are and in understanding why some religious groups, health professionals, and other members of society consider contraception (but not natural family planning) …

Do The Rich Get Richer? A Meta-Analysis Of Methodological And Substantive Moderators Of Couple Enrichment, Terry L. Hight

Theses and Dissertations

This study examined the effectiveness of couple enrichment using currently-accepted standards of meta-analytic research, including analysis based upon both fixed-effects and random effects models. Ninety published and unpublished studies comparing enrichment groups to control groups were included in the analyses. The overall mean effect size (0.23) for couple enrichment was heterogeneous, positive, and significantly different than 0. Mean effect sizes for both post-treatment and follow-up did not differ significantly. Methodological and substantive moderator variables associated with publication date, publication source, program type, program length, latency of measurement, mode of measurement, measure type, measure/program congruence, design quality, and researcher allegiance were …

The Relationship Between Childhood Sexual Abuse And Revictimization In Adulthood Among Uni College Students, Kristine R. Wroblewski

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The purpose of this study was to determine if there was a relationship between childhood sexual abuse and adult revictimization. Two hypotheses were examined. It was hypothesized that childhood victims of sexual abuse were more likely to be revictimized as adults. It was also hypothesized that there would be significant differences in demographic and psychosocial correlates between victims of childhood sexual abuse and those who did not report childhood sexual abuse.

The Health and Safety Survey was administered to 589 students at the University of Northern Iowa. There were 398 female respondents and 182 male respondents. The Health and Safety …

Psychology And The Church: An Exemplar Of Psychologist-Clergy Collaboration, Kathryn M. Benes, Joseph M. Welsh, Mark R. Mcminn, Amy W. Dominguez, Daniel C. Aikins

Faculty Publications - Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) Program

Despite the increasing attention being given to clergy-psychologist collaboration, many psychologists may wonder what clergy-psychologist collaboration looks like in actual practice. The authors describe an example of clergy-psychologist collaboration involving a careful needs-assessment phase followed by the development of a wide spectrum of preventive, consultative, and direct services. Current challenges include funding, establishment of trust, and the integration of psychology and spirituality. Implications for professional psychologists are discussed.

Their Promises Of Paradise: Will Olmstead V. L.C. Resuscitate The Constitutional Least Restrictive Alternative Principle In Mental Disability Law, Michael L. Perlin Jan 2000

Their Promises Of Paradise: Will Olmstead V. L.C. Resuscitate The Constitutional Least Restrictive Alternative Principle In Mental Disability Law, Michael L. Perlin

Articles & Chapters

This article argues that the Supreme Court's decision in Olmstead v. L.C., 119 S. Ct. 2176 (1999), finding a qualified right to community treatment and services for certain institutionalized persons under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and endorsing an "integration mandate," forces us to reconsider the role of the "least restrictive alternative" in institutional mental disability law, and may serve to resuscitate and revitalize the constitutional foundations of that principle in this area of the law. In this context, Olmstead has the capacity to be the Supreme Court's most therapeutic mental disability law decision since that Court decided, in …

I Ain't Gonna Work On Maggie's Farm No More: Institutional Segregation, Community Treatment, The Ada, And The Promise Of Olmstead V. L.C., Michael L. Perlin

Articles & Chapters

Olmstead v. L.C., 119 S. Ct. 2176 (1999), qualifiedly affirming a decision that the Americans with Disabilities Act entitled plaintiffs - residents of Georgia State Hospital - to treatment in an "integrated community setting" as opposed to an "unnecessarily segregated" state hospital, potentially has the capacity to transform and revolutionize institutional mental disability law. Whether that potential is realized depends on multiple factors, especially the extent to which courts, legislatures and the public are willing to confront the extent to which sanism (an irrational prejudice of the same quality and character of other irrational prejudices that cause and are reflected …

For The Misdemeanor Outlaw: The Impact Of The Ada On The Institutionalization Of Criminal Defendants With Mental Disabilities, Michael L. Perlin

Articles & Chapters

This article argues that the Supreme Court's decision in Olmstead v. L.C., 119 S. Ct. 2176 (1999), finding a qualified right to community treatment and services for certain institutionalized persons under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), causes us to reconceptualize state policies that mandate that all defendants in four categories - those being evaluated for competency to stand trial, those found permanently incompetent to stand trial under the Supreme Court's decision in Jackson v. Indiana, 406 U.S. 715 (1972), those being evaluated for insanity, and those found not guilty by reason of insanity - be treated and housed in …

Johnny's In The Basement/Mixing Up His Medicine: Therapeutic Jurisprudence And Clinical Teaching, Keri K. Gould, Michael L. Perlin Jan 2000

Johnny's In The Basement/Mixing Up His Medicine: Therapeutic Jurisprudence And Clinical Teaching, Keri K. Gould, Michael L. Perlin

Articles & Chapters

Clinical legal education is both more exhilarating and more stressful than "traditional" legal education. It forces students to confront their pre-existing assumptions about the practice of law and the representation of clients (frequently, indigent and marginalized individuals), and it similarly forces them to integrate new doctrine, theory, and practice in a very different way than "regular" law classes demand.

Therapeutic jurisprudence considers the role of the law as a therapeutic agent, and examines all aspects of the legal system in an effort to determine whether it is operating therapeutically or anti-therapeutically, and suggests that legal decision-makers consider the potential impact …

Globalization, Human Rights And Critical Race Feminism: Voices From The Margins, Penelope Andrews Jan 2000

Globalization, Human Rights And Critical Race Feminism: Voices From The Margins, Penelope Andrews

Articles & Chapters

South Africa and Australia, albeit markedly different in their demographics, politics, and history, share a colonial past, where race was the fault line throughout the society. Although there were marked differences in the colonial structure and various policies of the colonial administrators, both societies shared certain patriarchal attitudes that cemented during the colonial period and left a particular legacy of violence against black women. In both, the incidence of violence against women was so systemic and so ubiquitous that it has been described as a continuing violation of their human rights. The intersection of colonialism, patriarchy and violence and its …

Computerized Training Methods: Effects On Retention And Rate Of Responding., Finnur Oddsson Jan 2000

Computerized Training Methods: Effects On Retention And Rate Of Responding., Finnur Oddsson

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The purpose of this dissertation was to evaluate the difference between two methods for presenting training stimuli, Single- and Multi-trials procedures. The former presents one stimulus in a single workspace and the latter presents many stimuli. Experiment 1 attempted to explain why Multi-trial methods sustain higher rates of responding than Single-trials. The results showed that the primary reason for the high rates of responding to Multi-trials is the presence of multiple stimuli, which allow subjects to read ahead to a consecutive stimulus while responding to a previous one. Experiment 2 evaluated the generality of the findings of previous research that …
