Synthesis And Structural Characterization Of Organotin And Group Ivb Metallocene Dichlorides With Kinetin, Donna M. Chamely-Wiik

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Metal containing polymers were synthesized by reaction of organotin and group IVB metallocene dichlorides with kinetin, a plant growth hormone (PGH), via the interfacial polycondensation process. Product yields were in the range of 40--63% and degrees of polymerization were from 20 to 150. The structures of the products were determined using infrared and mass spectroscopy. Further characterization involved determination of solubility, degree of polymerization and electrical conductivity. The biological potential of the products was tested against selected microorganisms and Balb/3T3 cell lines. One of the products showed activity in the 0.2mug/ml range, one hundredth of that of similar compounds. Germination …

The Effect Of Filtered Roadway Lighting On Nesting By Loggerhead Sea Turtles (Caretta Caretta L.), Jeffrey P. Pennell Jan 2000

The Effect Of Filtered Roadway Lighting On Nesting By Loggerhead Sea Turtles (Caretta Caretta L.), Jeffrey P. Pennell

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

The purpose of this study was to determine if filtered street lighting affected the nesting behavior of loggerhead sea turtles ( Caretta caretta L.). My study site was a nesting beach at Carlin Park, Jupiter, Florida. During the 1999 nesting season, portions of the beach were either kept dark or were illuminated by four 70 W high-pressure sodium (HPS) streetlights, each housed in a cut-off fixture covered by an acrylic (model #2422) filter. These filters excluded all light wavelengths below 540 nm. The excluded wavelengths repel nesting females. Daily counts of nesting and non-nesting crawls were made. Data from the …

Test Of Bem's Model Of The Development Of Sexual Orientation, Priscilla Ann Rouse Jan 2000

Test Of Bem's Model Of The Development Of Sexual Orientation, Priscilla Ann Rouse

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

This study tested Bem's (1996) "Exotic Becomes Erotic" theory of sexual orientation. Participants were 182 4th- through 8 th-graders. In accord with Bem's theory, sex-typing (i.e., sex-typed traits, interests, and playmate preferences) and goodness-of-fit with one's gender predicted heterosexual identity. However, goodness-of-fit did not mediate relations of sex-typing to heterosexual identity; instead, sex-typing mediated the relation of felt similarity to heterosexual identity. Implications for alternative models are discussed.

These two products were characterized with fourier transform infrared spectrometry, ultraviolet spectrometry, mass spectral analysis and elemental analysis. Their complexes of Cu+2 were prepared.

Study On Atm Multiplexing And Threshold-Based Connection Admission Control In Connection-Oriented Packet Networks, Xiaohong. Yuan Jan 2000

Study On Atm Multiplexing And Threshold-Based Connection Admission Control In Connection-Oriented Packet Networks, Xiaohong. Yuan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

The research reported in this dissertation studies ATM multiplexing and connection admission control schemes for traffic management in connection-oriented packet networks. A new threshold-based connection admission control scheme is proposed and analyzed. The scheme uses effective bandwidth to make decision whether to accept or reject the connection request. This threshold specified effective-bandwidth method is first simulated on a simple 4-node connection-oriented packet network model, and then extended to a more complex 8-node network model under a variety of environments. To reduce the cell-loss ratio when the arrival rates of the connection requests are large, the dynamic effective bandwidth mechanism is …

Wallace Stevens: Tale Teller Of The Soul, Denise Marie Frusciante Jan 2000

Wallace Stevens: Tale Teller Of The Soul, Denise Marie Frusciante

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

In his work Re-Visioning Psychology, Jungian depth psychologist James Hillman defines the soul as "a perspective rather than a substance, a viewpoint toward things rather than a thing itself"(xvi). This definition helps to show the existence of a nontraditional, but not anti-Christian, soul in the works of Wallace Stevens. From the swirling chaos of "The Pleasures of Merely Circulating" to the underworld liminal irreality displayed in "Yellow Afternoon," we find psyche flourishing in the poetry of Stevens. She dwells in an underworld existence surrounded by archetypal Gods, such as Hermes, Hades, Dionysus, Priapus, and Zeus. While Stevens does not use …

Theory Of Political Analysis Utilizing Power-Based Matrices, John R. Batey Jan 2000

Theory Of Political Analysis Utilizing Power-Based Matrices, John R. Batey

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

The existing literature regarding political power, hegemony, and mass-elite relationships could benefit from the utilization of a common theoretical framework. Such an approach calls for the synthesis of extant theories of political power into a theoretical structure that is easily translatable across various systemic contexts. Most political structures are to an extent power-based and hierarchical. The analysis of these power-laden structures is an important component of both political theory and political action. This thesis uses three cases studies to illustrate that these structures are commonplace and to explain certain aspects of their creation and destruction. The chief goal is to …

Visualization Of Search Engine Query Result Using Region-Based Document Model On Xml Documents, Sunish Umesh Parikh Jan 2000

Visualization Of Search Engine Query Result Using Region-Based Document Model On Xml Documents, Sunish Umesh Parikh

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Information access systems have traditionally focused on retrieval of documents consisting of titles and abstracts. The underlying assumptions of such systems are not necessarily appropriate for full text, structured documents. Context and structure should play an important role in information access from full text document collections. When a system retrieves a document in response to a query, it is important to indicate not only how strong the match is (e.g., how many terms from the query are present in the document), but also how frequent each term is, how each term is distributed in the text and where the terms …

Water Tables And Drainage Uniformity In The Everglades Agricultural Area, Raymond Michael Garcia Jan 2000

Water Tables And Drainage Uniformity In The Everglades Agricultural Area, Raymond Michael Garcia

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Drainage waters leaving the Everglades Agricultural Area (EAA) have been implicated as having adverse effects on the receiving Water Conservation Areas (WCAs) and Everglades National Park (ENP). The objectives were to quantify and describe the rainfall and drainage events, characterize their effects on the water table system, and determine any relationships between the open channel drainage system and the field water tables on farms in the EAA. Water table rise in the soil profile from rainfall averaged a ratio of 10.6:1. Traditional expectations of field drainage behavior to channel gradients were not apparent. Field observation well drainage rates showed no …

X-Ray And Neutron Powder Diffraction Studies Of A Biocompatible Apatite, Nearchos I. Papanearchou

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

The problem of the carbonate substitution in bioapatites is studied via x-ray and neutron powder diffraction. A series of samples of low temperature carbonate hydroxyapatites with varying carbonate content was synthesized. The carbonate solubility in the hydroxyapatite system was studied with x-ray diffraction. The detailed crystal structure parameters of the synthetic carbonate hydroxyapatites were studied as a function of temperature and carbonate content from the analysis of Rietveld refinements of neutron powder diffraction data. The phosphate tetrahedron is distorted by the carbonate substitution. The tetrahedral bond lengths P-O1 and P-O2 decrease by 2--3%. The atomic displacement parameters (ADPs) of the …

Variability In Winter Mass Balance Of Northern Hemisphere Glaciers And Relations With Atmospheric Circulation, Gregory J. Mccabe, Andrew G. Fountain, Mark Dyurgerov Jan 2000

Variability In Winter Mass Balance Of Northern Hemisphere Glaciers And Relations With Atmospheric Circulation, Gregory J. Mccabe, Andrew G. Fountain, Mark Dyurgerov

Geography Faculty Publications and Presentations

An analysis of variability in the winter mass balance (WMB) of 22 glaciers in the Northern Hemisphere indicates two primary modes of variability that explain 46% of the variability among all glaciers. The first mode of variability characterizes WMB variability in Northern and Central Europe and the second mode primarily represents WMB variability in northwestern North America, but also is related to variability in WMB of one glacier in Europe and one in Central Asia. These two modes of WMB variability are explained by variations in mesoscale atmospheric circulation which are driving forces of variations in surface temperature and precipitation. …

Entrainment Of Larval Release In An Intertidal Crab ( Uca Thayeri) After Exposure To A Different Tidal Regime: Testing The "Plasticity" Hypothesis, Ann Weaver Jan 2000

Entrainment Of Larval Release In An Intertidal Crab ( Uca Thayeri) After Exposure To A Different Tidal Regime: Testing The "Plasticity" Hypothesis, Ann Weaver

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Endogenous rhythms allow most organisms to synchronize their behavior and physiology with physical cycles that vary on a daily, lunar or annual cycle. Populations within species often show variation in the timing of functionally identical rhythms. This variation occurs because physical cycles may differ with geography. The purpose of this study was to determine whether hatching rhythms shown by fiddler crabs (Genus Uca) on one coastline could be entrained by the different tide patterns present at another coastline. To test this I transferred breeding females (Uca thayeri) from mangroves on the west coast of Florida to mangroves on the east …

Fast-Floquet Method Of Hingeless-Rotor Trim And Stability Including Comparisons With Experiments And Approximate Methods, Guifa. Ma Jan 2000

Fast-Floquet Method Of Hingeless-Rotor Trim And Stability Including Comparisons With Experiments And Approximate Methods, Guifa. Ma

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

The trim and stability of an isolated hingeless rotor in forward flight are predicted for two coning angles with advance ratio, shaft angle and collective pitch variations. These predictions are correlated with measurements from a test model with four soft-inplane, soft-torsion blades. The test was conducted by the U.S. Army Aeroflightdynamics Directorate at Ames. The collective pitch and shaft angle are set prior to each test point, and the rotor is trimmed as follows: the longitudinal and lateral cyclic pitch controls are adjusted through a swashplate to minimize the 1/rev flapping moment at the 12% radial station. The database includes …

Enforcing Budgetary And Legal Compliance In The Government Sector: An Assessment Of Preauditing In The State Of Kuwait, Yousef Mohammad Almutairi

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Auditing has become both a vital activity that validates correct operations of an accounting system and is an important tool to measure financial and public accountability. Preauditing implementation in Kuwait since 1994 has been designed to ensure and improve compliance with budgetary laws and regulations by governmental units before budget execution. The purpose of this study is to examine whether compliance has been improved in those governmental units that apply preauditing and to determine the factors that affect compliance with budgetary laws and regulations. The research framework is based on a literature review of governmental auditing, enforcement research, and the …

Frequency-Dependent Characteristics Of Microstrip Transmission Lines, Settapong. Malisuwan Jan 2000

Frequency-Dependent Characteristics Of Microstrip Transmission Lines, Settapong. Malisuwan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

This dissertation is concerned with the studies on the frequency-dependent characteristics of microstrip line structures. Relevant considerations are applied to evaluate crosstalk in symmetric, coupled and lossy (dispersive) microstrip transmission lines. The technique adopted supplements the wide-range of semi-empirical expressions available in the literature on the frequency-dependent even- and odd-mode effective dielectric constants as well as the characteristic impedances of coupled microstrip lines. The accuracy of a crosstalk transfer function deduced is verified with theoretical and experimental results. The behavior of crosstalk versus line-spacing, dielectric substrate characteristics, and line-length is analyzed. This study is also extended to address the influence …

Feasibility Study On Using Lonworks Power Line Transceivers For Underwater Communications, Jennifer Cairns Powell Jan 2000

Feasibility Study On Using Lonworks Power Line Transceivers For Underwater Communications, Jennifer Cairns Powell

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

This project consisted of a feasibility study to ascertain whether or not an inexpensive acoustic modem for an Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV) could be developed using low cost commercially available products. Our AUV's at Florida Atlantic University currently use LonWorks for their internal control networks, so we have plenty of experience with their parts. The LonWorks Power Line Transceivers are capable of generating a signal that can be sent to a transducer for communication through the water. The PLT-30 Power Line Transceiver generates a direct sequence spread spectrum signal (DSSS) that offers many useful operating features; such as anti-jam, interference …

Flexural Failure Of Curved Sandwich Beams With Implanted Interfacial Debonds, Andrew Maxwell Layne Jan 2000

Flexural Failure Of Curved Sandwich Beams With Implanted Interfacial Debonds, Andrew Maxwell Layne

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Effects of face/core debonding on the structural integrity of curved sandwich beams subjected to opening bending moments has been examined experimentally. Curved beams of glass/polyester faces and PVC H30 foam core were manufactured. Various sizes of debonds were created using thin Teflon sheets inserted at the outer face/core interface during processing. A fixture for testing curved beams in flexure was designed, manufactured and evaluated. Surface strains at the middle of the curve were recorded. Buckling of the debonded face sheet occurred followed by face/core propagation of the debond. Strength reduction of the beams under opening moments due to face/core debonding …

Flame In The Grate: The Kullus Character In A Selection Of Harold Pinter's Early Works, Brian Charles Nudelman Jan 2000

Flame In The Grate: The Kullus Character In A Selection Of Harold Pinter's Early Works, Brian Charles Nudelman

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Between the years 1949 and 1955, Harold Pinter was writing not plays, but poems and prose. Three works written during this period are "Kullus," "The Task," and "The Examination." Not only do these works follow chronologically, but also the intricate relationship between the narrator and Kullus established within each seems to continually refer back to a previous work. When read together, with "The Task" central, the three works form a continuing narrative of conflict and personal struggle, and for each to be fully appreciated and understood, one needs that knowledge gained from seeing the progression in relationship that is developed …

The thesis covers background work in this area and discusses the results obtained by other researchers. A neural network is then developed to predict the future values of the USD/GBP and USD/DEM exchange rates. Both single-step and iterated multi-step predictions are considered. The performance of neural networks strongly …

Habitat Suitability And Population Demographics Of The Seagrass, Thalassia Testudinum, In The Northeast Salt Ponds Of Key West, Florida, Cheryl L. Miller Jan 2000

Habitat Suitability And Population Demographics Of The Seagrass, Thalassia Testudinum, In The Northeast Salt Ponds Of Key West, Florida, Cheryl L. Miller

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Reconstructive aging techniques were used to construct the age frequency distributions of T. testudinum short shoots in the Salt Ponds of Key West, FL. Median short shoot age was approximately two years. No evidence of sexual reproductive effort was found. A site-specific leaf emergence rate was not used, which may have contributed error in the reconstructive technique. Gradients in salinity, phosphorous availability, community composition, and leaf width were observed along the water flow pathway through the ponds. Populations of short shoots more distal from the tidal source exhibited an older age structure reflecting higher salinity, temperature, and dissolved oxygen stresses. …

From Policy To Practice To Management: A Restorative Justice Framework, Sandra Pavelka O'Brien Jan 2000

From Policy To Practice To Management: A Restorative Justice Framework, Sandra Pavelka O'Brien

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Two distinct models have guided the juvenile justice system during the past century---individual treatment/rehabilitation and retributive justice. While its historical orientation has been individual treatment, in recent years it has become predominately punitive (Bazemore and Day, 1998; Bazemore, 1993). The organizational mission and goals of the juvenile justice system have become internally inconsistent as it tries to satisfy competing goals, such as punishment, treatment, and protection of public safety. Currently, justice professionals have sought to clarify the aims of juvenile justice management and policy. Several possibilities exist for the future of the juvenile justice system. One proposal for the future …

Functional Stabilization Of Unstable Systems, Patrick Stephen Foo Jan 2000

Functional Stabilization Of Unstable Systems, Patrick Stephen Foo

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Humans are often faced with tasks that require stabilizing inherently unstable situations. We performed four experiments to explore the nature of functional stabilization. In Experiment 1 participants balanced a pole until a time criterion was reached. The geometry, mass, and characteristic "fall time" of the pole were manipulated. Distributions of timing between pole and hand velocities showed strong action-perception coupling. When actions demonstrated a potential for failure, the period of hand oscillation correlated significantly with the "time to balance" (t bal=theta/theta.), where q is pole angle re: the vertical balance point, but not other quantities such as theta and theta. …

Group-Level Consequences Of Communication About Physical Appearance, Donna Jill Schwartz Jan 2000

Group-Level Consequences Of Communication About Physical Appearance, Donna Jill Schwartz

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Recent research has looked at sociocultural standards and social comparison to explain body image disturbances (Thompson, 1996). This study uses Latane's Dynamic Social Impact Theory to explore the emergence of group level consequences of discussing these societal standards of physical appearance. It was hypothesized that there would be more clustering, consolidation, correlation and continued diversity amongst the participants opinions by the end of the five week discussion. These hypotheses were not supported by measures of clustering, consolidation, correlation and continued diversity. These results indicate that Dynamic Social Impact Theory alone may not be useful for studying the consequence of group …
