Kinetic Parameters And Organic Phosphorus Remineralization Potential Of Alkaline Phosphatase Activity In The Tropical Seagrass Thalassia Testudinum And Associated Epiphyton, Samantha Lorraine Evans Jan 2000

Kinetic Parameters And Organic Phosphorus Remineralization Potential Of Alkaline Phosphatase Activity In The Tropical Seagrass Thalassia Testudinum And Associated Epiphyton, Samantha Lorraine Evans

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Tropical carbonate estuaries are P-limited due to high carbonate sorption of DIP, therefore alternative P sources may represent an important contribution to the nutrient requirements of submerged aquatic vegetation. Alkaline phosphatase (AP'ase) is a cell-surface enzyme that allows aquatic plants to utilize the organic-P pool, and its activity (APA) may generate a significant portion of plant P-requirements in oligotrophic environments. Seasonal APA of the seagrass Thalassia testudinum and its epiphytic community was measured in NE Florida Bay. APA was higher for T. testudinum leaves with intact epiphytes (TTE) than for T. testudinum leaves alone (TT) in all seasons, and the …

The analytical investigations were as follows: (i) extrapolation of the long-term performance at ambient temperature, based on …

Mobility Pattern-Based Routing Algorithm For Mobile Ad Hoc Wireless Networks, Nirav. Vyas Jan 2000

Mobility Pattern-Based Routing Algorithm For Mobile Ad Hoc Wireless Networks, Nirav. Vyas

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

This thesis describes routing in mobile ad hoc wireless networks. Ad hoc networks lack wired backbone to maintain routes as mobile hosts move and power is on or off. Therefore, the hosts in ad hoc networks must cooperate with each other to determine routes in a distributed manner. Routing based on a Location is a frequently used approach, where the searching space for a route is reduced to smaller zone by defining request zone and expected zone. We propose a mobility pattern based algorithm to reduce the overhead, then evaluate the proposed algorithm through simulation. We have implemented two mobility …

Modeling Of A Storm Water System: Village Of Tequesta Level Of Service Study, Wayne Andrew Sharp

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

The Village of Tequesta typifies an older storm water system. The infrastructure for the system has not kept up with development within the community. The design was for the conditions at the time of initial development. The levels of services provided are pertinent to establishing a direction and long term goals under current conditions. The existing seven and a half miles of conduit was modeled for a 25 year 24 hour storm. The rainfall amount simulated for the Tequesta area is 10.48 inches within a tidal area. The effects of the tide and the conditions of the conduit system lead …

Metaphorical Worlds In Samuel Beckett's "Endgame" And Harold Pinter's "Ashes To Ashes", Robin M. Fiedler Jan 2000

Metaphorical Worlds In Samuel Beckett's "Endgame" And Harold Pinter's "Ashes To Ashes", Robin M. Fiedler

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Harold Pinter's debt to Samuel Beckett is not a matter of direct copying or replication, but a natural progression of the postmodern dramatic form. Both Pinter and Beckett examine human violence, companionship, game playing, religion, and philosophy, culminating in a world-as-stage metaphor where characters are subtly aware of being both spectators and players. Pinter's and Beckett's mimetic representations, whether successful or not, capture the essence of existence as a continuous creative process: characters examine dreamlike memories of experiences for meaning and narrate the past in their present existence in order to bring purpose to their future. The creative process of …

Narrative Technique In Graham Greene's "The Power And The Glory", Kathie Suzanne Russell Jan 2000

Narrative Technique In Graham Greene's "The Power And The Glory", Kathie Suzanne Russell

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Although the preponderance of modern criticism about The Power and the Glory focuses only on religious themes and concerns, the formal narrative technique of Graham Greene deserves equal consideration. Greene very deliberately and consistently constructs a narrative that uses specific formal devices and linguistic techniques that further enhance a formal rhetorical study of the novel and that augment a thematic analysis of the novel. Greene's formal techniques include shifts in narrative point of view, precise forms of language, changing levels of diction, and specific grammatical devices. By analyzing the narrative techniques and linguistic markers that Greene employs, in conjunction with …

Numerical Simulation Of Wave Energy Dissipation In Turbulent Boundary Layers, Stephanie Sylvie Moneris Jan 2000

Numerical Simulation Of Wave Energy Dissipation In Turbulent Boundary Layers, Stephanie Sylvie Moneris

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Shoaling surface waves create turbulent shear flows at the sea-bed and thereby contribute to wave energy dissipation in the bottom boundary layer. Turbulent boundary layers are examined using a high-resolution time-dependent three-dimensional numerical model. Simulations estimate the wave energy dissipation in the boundary layer. Results indicate that turbulence levels are coupled to the wave cycle; accelerating flow organizes the boundary layer structure, decelerating flow destabilizes it and flow reversal induces the strongest turbulent bursts. Details of the flow are functions of the Reynolds number, wave frequency, wave complexity, presence of a mean current, and the flow history of the preceding …

New Woman Before She Was New: Olive Schreiner's "The Story Of An African Farm" And Fanny Fern's "Ruth Hall", Dana Jo Richardson Jan 2000

New Woman Before She Was New: Olive Schreiner's "The Story Of An African Farm" And Fanny Fern's "Ruth Hall", Dana Jo Richardson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Despite the designation of Olive Schreiner's Lyndall in The Story of an African Farm as the first "New Woman" in literature, the nineteenth-century New Woman, with her high ideals and belief in an androgynous compromise of sex roles, is exemplified by Fanny Fern's heroine Ruth in the novel Ruth Hall. While Lyndall speaks of social injustice done to women, the limitations of her provincial setting preclude her protests from achieving the level of social activism; however, Ruth's protests, in the form of newspaper articles, do reach the level of social activism. Schreiner's androgynous ideal becomes lost in a role reversal …

Potential Attenuation And Anode Current Output Determination Alternatives For Galvanic Anode Cathodic Protection Upon Offshore Pipelines, Keith P. Bethune Jan 2000

Potential Attenuation And Anode Current Output Determination Alternatives For Galvanic Anode Cathodic Protection Upon Offshore Pipelines, Keith P. Bethune

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

A recently developed equation governing cathodic polarization attenuation along a pipeline protected by galvanic anodes is first solved. The solution is based upon a numerical finite difference method (FDM). The resulting subroutine computes the polarization along the cathode and the corresponding anode current output based upon the physical design variables and electrochemical properties of the cathode. Validation of this method is accomplished through comparisons with a proven existing method for attenuation prediction, namely the Boundary Element Method (BEM). As both the FDM and BEM solutions are mathematically complex and time consuming, it is then demonstrated that a modified form of …

Quest For Selfhood In Ursula Le Guin's "The Wizard Of Earthsea" And "The Farthest Shore", Jerry K. Durbeej Jan 2000

Quest For Selfhood In Ursula Le Guin's "The Wizard Of Earthsea" And "The Farthest Shore", Jerry K. Durbeej

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

In A Wizard of Earthsea and The Farthest Shore, Ursula K. Le Guin presents the theme of selfhood, of maturity, and of identity through the character heroes of Ged and Arren. Of these two, Ged experiences the quest for selfhood on two levels: first, from boy to manhood, and then from manhood to the awareness of death. Both novels deal with the struggle to create, which is primarily a struggle with self, with one's own powers, and with the need to control these powers and their consequences. I have examined WOE through the perspective of Ged's coming of age, his …

Reaching A New Breed Of Donors: Strategic Communication For Attracting Baby Boomers As Major Donors To Public Institutions Of Higher Education, Katie Gustafson Stephens

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Maturing baby boomers are moving into prime giving years and, if history repeats itself, this generation will change the "philosophy of giving." These aging baby boomers will amass significant wealth either through inheritances or their successful businesses. It is therefore critical that professional fundraisers identify how to effectively communicate with the affluent members of this generation to develop them into major donors. Using a qualitative approach through in-depth interviews, this research examines characteristics and traits of baby boomers, identifying seven common themes that can be used to develop communication strategies. It concludes that affluent baby boomers demand accountability from charitable …

Resiliency Enhancement: A Comparison Of After-School Child Care Programs For Selected Elementary School Students, James F. Martin Jan 2000

Resiliency Enhancement: A Comparison Of After-School Child Care Programs For Selected Elementary School Students, James F. Martin

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

The purpose of this study was to determine whether at-risk elementary school students enrolled in an after-school program offering resiliency training would be positively affected both academically and behaviorally. Survey results and literature reviews indicate that the issue of at-risk, neglected, or abused students is the number one issue facing society and has moved it to the forefront of educational prominence. Although there is a substantial amount of literature on the subject, most is not research based and is focused only on the pathology or risk factors with which children have to cope, rather than on controlled, evaluative studies that …

Rietveld Analysis Of Powder Diffraction Data From A Carbonate Fluorapatite, Hadi Yazdani Moghaddam Jan 2000

Rietveld Analysis Of Powder Diffraction Data From A Carbonate Fluorapatite, Hadi Yazdani Moghaddam

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

The mechanism of the carbonate substitution in the apatite structure is unraveled through analysis of Rietveld refinements of powder diffraction data from a single-phase natural carbonate fluorapatite (francolite). The refined values of the P-O bond lengths give a ~1.6% distortion of the phosphate tetrahedron caused by the carbonate substitution. The two bond lengths P-O1 and P-O2 and their corresponding angles on the mirror plane of the phosphate tetrahedron are mainly disturbed by this substitution. A static positional disorder, mainly of the atoms at the tetrahedral sites, is revealed from the temperature dependence of the atomic anisotropic displacement parameters. A model …

R-Process In Neutrino-Driven Winds, Tatiana Vladimirovna Freund Jan 2000

R-Process In Neutrino-Driven Winds, Tatiana Vladimirovna Freund

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

This thesis considers the neutrino-driven wind that arises from a proto-neutron star following a supernova explosion as a possible site for the synthesis of the heavy elements by the r-process. We first review the conditions necessary to obtain an r-process, the constraints on the r-process yields for each event, and show the neutrino-driven winds from proto-neutron stars are suitable for an r-process. We next discuss some of the modifications of the supernova code that were necessary in order to numerically simulate the neutrino-driven winds and steps necessary to initiate these conditions. Three important parameters of the wind characterizing the nucleosynthesis …

Sediment Phosphorus Fractionation In Calcium Carbonate Sediments Of Northeastern Florida Bay, Robert E Jr Benz Jan 2000

Sediment Phosphorus Fractionation In Calcium Carbonate Sediments Of Northeastern Florida Bay, Robert E Jr Benz

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Different physiochemical processes control phosphorus storage in subtropical versus temperate estuaries; however, few studies are available on sediment phosphorus storage from the subtropics. In this study, solid-phase phosphorus pools of northeastern Florida Bay's sediments were examined by sequential chemical extractions, separating phosphorus into exchangeable, iron-bound, calcium-bound, and residual organic fractions. Calcium-bound phosphorus was the dominant fraction, accounting for approximately 60% of the total phosphorus and 93% of the inorganic phosphorus. Residual organic phosphorus was the second dominant fraction, accounting for 37% of the total phosphorus. In contrast to calcium-bound and residual organic phosphorus, the concentration of iron-bound phosphorus was low, …

Role Of The Writers In The Ballets Russes, Martine Francoise Pionzio Jan 2000

Role Of The Writers In The Ballets Russes, Martine Francoise Pionzio

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

In histories of European Modernism, it is almost axiomatic that the first performance of Serge Diaghilev's Ballets Russes in Paris in 1910 was an aesthetic watershed, culminating earlier experiments by Symbolists and Cubists and forecasting later Modernists' radical syntheses of French arts and literature. Yet the role of French writers in the productions of the Ballets Russes has been neglected by literary critics and historians. Nijinski's choreography of L'Apres-midi d'un Faune stands as the theatrical culmination of Mallarme's poetic. The ballets Sheherazade and The Rite of Spring find a counterpart in the literary work of their admirer Proust, and Cocteau's …

Sally Potter: A Filmmaker's Use Of Deconstruction In Film, Diane Susan Honour Jan 2000

Sally Potter: A Filmmaker's Use Of Deconstruction In Film, Diane Susan Honour

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Hollywood films have a great impact on many countries in the world. Fictional cinema tends to predominantly follow a particular form of narrative which is used beyond the United States. British film tends to use this format but there are filmmakers who prefer to take an alternative route to creating film. Theoretical systems of postmodernism and poststructuralism, and textual analysis, reveal that the body of films by Sally Potter: Thriller, The Gold Diggers, The-London Story, Orlando and The Tango Lesson demonstrate deconstruction to varying degrees. Analysis indicates that Potter's deconstructive films speak from different perspectives, draw attention to stereotypical representations …

Senescence- And Death-Related Alterations Of Chlorophylls And Carotenoids In Marine Phytoplankton, Lei Liu Jan 2000

Senescence- And Death-Related Alterations Of Chlorophylls And Carotenoids In Marine Phytoplankton, Lei Liu

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Fresh and aged unispecific samples have been analyzed using IP-RPHPLC and PDA in order to reveal the chlorophylls and carotenoids alterations during senescence and death. Aging studies showed that cyanobacterial chlorophyll- a was destroyed faster than carotenoids in room oxic conditions. The reverse was found for the other eukaryotic species. Species with high chlorophyllase activity produced phytol free chlorophyll derivatives during death. The rate of chlorophyll-a destruction was; room oxic > room anoxic > cold anoxic. Pyropheophorbide-a was often the final product of type-I chlorophyll-a degradation. The conversion from fucoxanthin to fucoxanthinol was observed. Chlorophyll-c was found to be destroyed faster than …
