Awareness Of Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points, Gayle Brosseau Jan 2000

Awareness Of Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points, Gayle Brosseau

Theses

This study was an attempt to identify the awareness of principles of Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point (HACCP) by individuals who completed an eight-hour food handlers' class at Los Angeles Mission College. A six-item questionnaire was distributed to one hundred eighty individuals enrolled in the food handlers' classes during the winter of 1999-2000. One hundred twenty-five questionnaires were returned and tabulated during the spring 2000. Data analysis revealed that there is limited awareness of HACCP principles by trainees. The study, coupled with the literature review, indicates that there is a need for HACCP training. Other research showed a correlation between …

Comparative Analysis Of Moisture Vapor Transmission Rate Data: Mocon Vs. Usp, Anthony Maiola Jan 2000

Comparative Analysis Of Moisture Vapor Transmission Rate Data: Mocon Vs. Usp, Anthony Maiola

Theses

The primary objective of this study was to directly compare two distinctly diverse package moisture permeation test methods. The two methods that were compared were the USP <671> Containers Permeation: Single Unit Container and Unit Dose Containers for Capsules and Tablets and the MOCON Modulated Infrared Sensor Method (ASTM F 1249). The tests generate a value known as an MVTR (Moisture Vapor Transmission Rate) value. The focus of this study was to determine whether there is a significant statistical difference between results of the two methods, specifically for unit dose blister packaging. Since MVTR is a package integrity characteristic, it is …

Graph Coloring Heuristics From Investigation Of Smallest Hard To Color Graphs, Andrew Radin Jan 2000

Graph Coloring Heuristics From Investigation Of Smallest Hard To Color Graphs, Andrew Radin

Theses

Vertex coloring of graphs is an NP-complete problem. No polynomial time algorithm is known to color graphs optimally. The best we can do to handle vertex coloring of graphs is to create heuristics which provide a guess as to an optimal coloring. This thesis examines a number of known vertex coloring heuristics, and compares their performance to a brute-force optimal coloring. These comparisons are made for relatively small graphs with low numbers of vertices. The behaviors of the existing heuristics is examined to aid in the creation of new heuristics. The new heuristics are compared against the existing heuristics for …

Evaluation Of Packaging Materials Under Vacuum For Potential Use As Internal Cushioning For Semiconductor Industry Vacuum Machinery, Andrew Baisch Jan 2000

Evaluation Of Packaging Materials Under Vacuum For Potential Use As Internal Cushioning For Semiconductor Industry Vacuum Machinery, Andrew Baisch

Theses

This study explores a concept for applying basic packaging materials to an environment of high vacuum. This study identified three basic packaging materials and exposed them to a high vacuum environment to identify visual effects caused by the vacuum. In semiconductor and data storage industries, the machinery needed to ultimately create a computer chip often contains vacuum chambers. A common practice of the industry is to ship this machinery while under a state of high vacuum. There are parts inside these vacuum chambers that need protection from the effects of shock and vibration. By placing a sample of packaging material …

An Assessment Of On-Line Package Customization For Sheet Size Products Packaged In Paperboard Envelopes, Kevin Kennedy Jan 2000

An Assessment Of On-Line Package Customization For Sheet Size Products Packaged In Paperboard Envelopes, Kevin Kennedy

Theses

This study evaluates the on-line printing of paperboard envelopes as a means of supporting the need to provide customized packaging. Market forces and new business models are contributing to the need for customized packaging and rapid response to orders. Large retailers are demanding unique packaging presentations and global marketing requires localized packaging for different regions of the world. A business environment ofjust-intime delivery and minimal inventory levels demand flexibility to react to unpredictable product mix and volumes. These conditions require customized packaging within short cycle times. The traditional carton printing process using offset lithography does not respond quickly enough to …

Luminesence Study Of Polymer-Copolymer Blends Using A Carbazole/Iodine Probe/Quencher System, Tammy Davis Jan 2000

Luminesence Study Of Polymer-Copolymer Blends Using A Carbazole/Iodine Probe/Quencher System, Tammy Davis

Theses

The miscibility behavior of binary blends of polystyrene (PS), poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) and their copolymers was re-evaluated using the luminescence of carbazole (Cz) and its quenching by 4-iodoaniline (I). The chromophore and quencher probes were polymerized into the polymers and copolymers to be blended. These experiments were conducted at room temperature, on thin films, and were compared to the published results of Braun, et. al.13Homopolymer/copolymer blend compositions were selected from regions of miscible, partially miscible, and immiscible phase behavior. The quencher molecule, 4-iodoaniline, was derivatized to form the vinylfunctionalized monomer, N-(4-iodophenyl)maleimide (NIPMI). The synthesis of NIPMI was carried out in …

Nonlinear Ultrasound Image Modeling: Development Of A Complete End-To-End Model For Qualitative And Quantitative Analysis Of Medical Ultrasound, Kevin Ayer Jan 2000

Nonlinear Ultrasound Image Modeling: Development Of A Complete End-To-End Model For Qualitative And Quantitative Analysis Of Medical Ultrasound, Kevin Ayer

Theses

Finite amplitude sound propagation undergoes nonlinear distortion due to continuous path interaction with the propagation medium. This distortion tends to defocus the beam causing significant lateral and contrast resolution degradation. Fundamental understanding of this interaction requires development of computational models that accurately predict the nonlinear interaction - development of media-borne harmonics - as well as produce an ultrasound image - introduction of transducer effects, interface transitions, and innovative image processing to extract harmonics. Most computational models of ultrasound propagation assume axial symmetry for computational expediency. Two notable exceptions are the K-Z-K and NLP models. A new endto- end model, NUPROP, …

Vibration Field-To-Lab: Impact Of Time Measurement Intervals On Intensity, Frank Magnifico Jr, Jay Gerondale Jan 2000

Vibration Field-To-Lab: Impact Of Time Measurement Intervals On Intensity, Frank Magnifico Jr, Jay Gerondale

Theses

The objective of this study was to determine what impact various time measurement intervals would have on intensity levels in the trucking environment. The study was limited to timer triggered data collection associated with semi trailer vibration. The study then examined the relationship between established wake-up time intervals and the resultant intensities and PSD plots for the same field trip. In order to accomplish this, it was necessary to use multiple recorders. Each recorder was to be set with a specific time trigger threshold for recording data. Two vibration environments were analyzed using Saver vibration recording equipment. One environment was …

Scene-Based Nonuniformity Correction With Video Sequences And Registration, Russell C. Hardie, Majeed M. Hayat, Earnest Armstrong, Brian Yasuda Jan 2000

Scene-Based Nonuniformity Correction With Video Sequences And Registration, Russell C. Hardie, Majeed M. Hayat, Earnest Armstrong, Brian Yasuda

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

We describe a new, to our knowledge, scene-based nonuniformity correction algorithm for array detectors. The algorithm relies on the ability to register a sequence of observed frames in the presence of the fixed-pattern noise caused by pixel-to-pixel nonuniformity. In low-to-moderate levels of nonuniformity, sufficiently accurate registration may be possible with standard scene-based registration techniques. If the registration is accurate, and motion exists between the frames, then groups of independent detectors can be identified that observe the same irradiance (or true scene value). These detector outputs are averaged to generate estimates of the true scene values. With these scene estimates, and …

The Feasibility Of Developing A Computer Based Expert System To Mitigate Nuclear Power Plant Accidents, Jesse E. Smith Jan 2000

The Feasibility Of Developing A Computer Based Expert System To Mitigate Nuclear Power Plant Accidents, Jesse E. Smith

CCAC Theses and Dissertations

This study investigated the feasibility of developing a rule-based expert system to support nuclear plant operators in the mitigation of accidents. Human error in the use of Emergency Operating Procedures (EOPs) was the problem to be addressed. The goal was to determine if the Nuclear Plant Information System (NPIS) at one specific power plant would support development of an EOP operator aid to reduce the number of human errors.

A review of the literature confirmed that human error is a recurring problem. This is particularly evident during high stress situations, such as accidents. A rule-based operator aid can reduce human …

State Government Cost Recovery For Electronic Information Dissemination: A Comparative Study, Donald R. Wismer Jan 2000

State Government Cost Recovery For Electronic Information Dissemination: A Comparative Study, Donald R. Wismer

CCAC Theses and Dissertations

Prior to this study, no paradigm common among state governments regarding public policy principles on cost recovery for the dissemination of public information had been described. The study revealed that U.S. federal government policy has served as a model from which a majority of the states have proceeded. This study has compared the states with the federal government and with themselves to determine the policy boundaries. Themes from in the literature were presented and summarized, and measurable elements were isolated. Data from statutory, regulatory, and case law, and from explicit policy statements, were gathered and compared within graphical formats. A …

Theses

The measurement of the change in energy by a force from a dynamical action is central for study of modern dynamical mechanics. By analyzing energy along with variational calculus, the disciplines of Lagrangian and Hamiltonian dynamics have emerged. This thesis describes these systems, and discusses numerical solutions to a system of equations by Lagrangian, Hamiltonian, and First Integral solutions.

Machine Tool Spindle Design, Jamie Hoyt Jan 2000

Machine Tool Spindle Design, Jamie Hoyt

Theses

In modern machine tool applications the performance of a machine tool is judged by its ability to produce work-pieces accurately and efficiently. The stiffness of the machine tool spindle has a profound impact on the overall machine performance. The work presented here provides a tool for machine tool spindle designers to develop spindles that are sufficiently stiff to meet their needs. The analysis presented here is divided into three main sections. The first portion is a static analysis. The static analysis calculates the lateral deflection of the spindle-bearing system. AMatlab program was developed that aiiows the user to enter the …

All the mentioned targets …

Complete Randomized Cutting Plane Algorithms For Propositional Satisfiability, Stephen Lee Hansen Jan 2000

Complete Randomized Cutting Plane Algorithms For Propositional Satisfiability, Stephen Lee Hansen

CCAC Theses and Dissertations

The propositional satisfiability problem (SAT) is a fundamental problem in computer science and combinatorial optimization. A considerable number of prior researchers have investigated SAT, and much is already known concerning limitations of known algorithms for SAT. In particular, some necessary conditions are known, such that any algorithm not meeting those conditions cannot be efficient. This paper reports a research to develop and test a new algorithm that meets the currently known necessary conditions.

In chapter three, we give a new characterization of the convex integer hull of SAT, and two new algorithms for finding strong cutting planes. We also show …

Perceiving Imperceptible Harms (With Other Thoughts On Transitivity, Cumulative Effects, And Consequentialism), Donald H. Regan Jan 2000

Perceiving Imperceptible Harms (With Other Thoughts On Transitivity, Cumulative Effects, And Consequentialism), Donald H. Regan

Book Chapters

Many writers believe there can be cases which satisfy the following description: starting from an initial state of affairs, it is possible to make a series of changes, none of which alters the value of the state of affairs in any way, but such that the final state of affairs that results from the series of changes is worse than the initial state of affairs. I shall call the claim that there can be such cases the "ex nihilo" claim, since in a sense it asserts that the bad effects of the complete series of changes arise ex nihilo. Proponents …

Empty Moscow Stores: A Cautionary Tale For Property Innovators, Michael A. Heller Jan 2000

Empty Moscow Stores: A Cautionary Tale For Property Innovators, Michael A. Heller

Book Chapters

Under socialism, governments stifled markets and often left store shelves bare. One promise of transition was that new entrepreneurs would acquire the stores, create businesses, and fill the shelves. 2 However, after several years of reform, storefronts often remained empty, while flimsy metal kiosks, stocked full of goods, mushroomed on Moscow streets (Rapaczynski 1996). Why did new merchants not come in from the cold? This chapter argues that even if the initial endowment of property rights were clearly defined, corruption held in check, and the rule of law respected (e.g., Gray, Hanson, and Heller 1992; Frydman and Rapaczynski 1994; Shleifer …

Race And The Right To Vote After Rice V. Cayetano, Ellen D. Katz Jan 2000

Race And The Right To Vote After Rice V. Cayetano, Ellen D. Katz

Articles

Last Term, the Supreme Court relied on Gomillion [v. Lightfoot] to hold that Hawaii, like Alabama before it, had segregated voters by race in violation of the Fifteenth Amendment. The state law at issue in Rice v. Cayetano provided that only "Hawaiians" could vote for the trustees of the state's Office of Hawaiian Affairs ("OHA"), a public agency that oversees programs designed to benefit the State's native people. Rice holds that restricting the OHA electorate to descendants of the 1778 inhabitants of the Hawaiian Islands embodied a racial classification that effectively "fenc[ed] out whole classes of ...ci tizens from decisionmaking …

Re-Examining The Role Of Patents In Appropriating The Value Of Dna Sequences, Rebecca S. Eisenberg Jan 2000

Re-Examining The Role Of Patents In Appropriating The Value Of Dna Sequences, Rebecca S. Eisenberg

Articles

As public and private sector initiatives race to complete the sequence of the human genome, patent issues have played a prominent role in speculations about the significance of this achievement. How much of the genome will be subject to the control of patent holders, and what will this mean for future research and the development of products for the improvement of human health? Is a patent system developed to establish rights in mechanical inventions of an earlier era up to the task of resolving competing claims to the genome on behalf of the many sequential innovators who elucidate its sequence …

Making Biomedical Policy Through Constitutional Adjudication:The Example Of Physician-Assisted Suicide, Carl E. Scheider Jan 2000

Making Biomedical Policy Through Constitutional Adjudication:The Example Of Physician-Assisted Suicide, Carl E. Scheider

Book Chapters

Throughout most of American history no one would have supposed biomedical policy could or should be made through constitutional adjudication. No one would have thought that the Constitution spoke to biomedical issues, that those issues were questions of federal policy, or that judges were competent to handle them. Today, however, the resurgence of substantive due process has swollen the scope of the Fourteenth Amendment, the distinction between federal and state spheres is tattered, and few statutes escape judicial vetting. Furthermore, Abraham Lincoln's wish that the Constitution should "become the political religion of the nation" has been granted. "We now reverently …

Hyperspectral Imaging For Bottom Type Classification And Water Depth Determination, Nikole L. Wilson Jan 2000

Hyperspectral Imaging For Bottom Type Classification And Water Depth Determination, Nikole L. Wilson

Theses

Many recreational, military, and commercial activities take place in shallow coastal waters; therefore, interest is high in characterizing these areas. A variety of methods have been employed to determine water depths and classify the bottom using remote sensing. This research proposes to apply Philpot's principal components algorithm for bathymetric mapping to a MISI hyperspectral image, whereas previously this approach has been used on synthetic data. A description of the principal components algorithm is presented along with an outline of how it was applied to airborne hyperspectral images. The algorithm takes advantage of the ability to implement a deep-water correction, and …

Using Δe Distribution As A Predictor Of Digital Proofing Performance, Raul Eduardo Gonzalez Dorbecker Jan 2000

Using Δe Distribution As A Predictor Of Digital Proofing Performance, Raul Eduardo Gonzalez Dorbecker

Theses

The performance of color matching in ICC-based Color Management Systems (CMS) is being improved, and its workflow established. As part of the digital workflow, digital proofing plays an important roll in the control of color from capture to the printed page, but its method of evaluation is not clearly understood.

To evaluate the degree of color matching by digital proofing in an ICC-based CMS between a reference image and a sample image, the [formula] calculated by averaging the individual color differences is being used. Doing a qualitative evaluation, ICC-based CMS should be able to stand behind the statement that the …
