Caring For The Elderly: Oregon's Pioneers (Portland, Oregon), Nora Super, Lisa Sprague
National Health Policy Forum
This site visit looked at the continuum of care for its elderly and disabled citizens in the first state ever to secure Section 1915(c) and (d) waivers under Medicaid to support home- and community-based services. More than three-quarters of Oregon's Medicaid clients now receive care in these settings. Site visitors were briefed on the history and development of long-term care in the state as well as the various care settings available. Panels discussed strategies and partnerships focused on alleviating workforce shortages and highlighted Oregon nurses' authority to delegate certain caregiving tasks to laypeople. Multnomah County staff described county-level activities, especially …

On Sport and Society
Now that the state of Florida has released its incompetence and corruption from behind the facade of palm trees and beautiful beaches the true story behind the voting at the BCS can be told. Contributions to Books
Published as Chapter 10 in Clinical Assessment of Dangerousness: Empirical Contributions, Georges-Franck Pinard & Linda Pagani, eds.
As a boy, L. assaulted a hitchhiker and then urinated on him. As an adult, the 200-pound, alcohol and drug abuser routinely carried a pistol, stabbed and shot at his father, and terrorized his neighbors. For years, L. beat his wife. When she finally left him, he convinced a court to give him custody of their four children.
For the next four years, L. kept the children in an isolated trailer with no electricity, no phone, and no running water, allowing them out …

Photonuclear Physics: Laser Splits Atom, Donald Umstadter
Photonuclear Physics: Laser Splits Atom, Donald Umstadter
Donald Umstadter Publications
Lasers have become ubiquitous, being used in everything from a bar-code reader to a compact disk player. Who would have thought that they might be used to split the atom? A few scientists proposed to do just that more that a decade ago. But accomplishing it in the laboratory had to await the maturity of new technology, which enabled the construction of the world's most powerful lasers at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in the United States and at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory in the United Kingdom. Now two independent research teams have used these lasers to split the uranium …
