Furthering The Knowledge Commons In Our Field, Roger A. Lohmann

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

This paper suggests a variety of ways to advance the knowledge commons of third sector studies through the strategic use of electronic technology. Ways I have discussed include identifying and promulgating new associative forms of scholarly publishing, exploring the use of multi-media in data collection and presentation, defining and implementing strategic uses of XML, exploring and adopting new and emerging forms of trans-organizational groupware more suitable for commons, and encouraging and promulgating open standards.

Case Study Of San Francisco's Juvenile Probation Department's Community Service Program, Adrienne L. Blum Nov 2000

Case Study Of San Francisco's Juvenile Probation Department's Community Service Program, Adrienne L. Blum

Master's Theses

The following cost/benefit case study researches the San Francisco Juvenile Probation Department's alternative sentencing Community Service Program. The CSP offers nonviolent, criminally charged youth the opportunity to perform community service at various nonprofit organizations in lieu of incarceration in juvenile hall. This study highlights the benefits received as well as the associated costs incurred by juvenile offenders and nonprofit organizations as a result of their participation in the Community Service Program. Suggestions for further research and possible improvements to the program are discussed after the case study findings and results are presented.

For the case study, current participants or recent …

Findings From The Teaching, Learning, And Computing Survey: Is Larry Cuban Right?, Harry Jay Becker Nov 2000

Findings From The Teaching, Learning, And Computing Survey: Is Larry Cuban Right?, Harry Jay Becker

Education Policy Analysis Archives (EPAA)

Cuban (1986; 2000) has argued that computers are largely incompatible with the requirements of teaching, and that, for the most part, teachers will continue to reject their use as instruments of student work during class. Using data from a nationally representative survey of 4th through 12th grade teachers, this paper demonstrates that although Cuban correctly characterizes frequent use of computers in academic subject classes as a teaching practice of a small and distinct minority, certain conditions make a big difference in the likelihood of a teacher having her students use computers frequently during class time. ...

H-Ns Controls Pap And Daa Fimbrial Transcription In Escherichia Coli In Response To Multiple Environmental Cues, C. A. White-Ziegler, A. Villapakkam, K. Ronaszeki, S. Young Nov 2000

H-Ns Controls Pap And Daa Fimbrial Transcription In Escherichia Coli In Response To Multiple Environmental Cues, C. A. White-Ziegler, A. Villapakkam, K. Ronaszeki, S. Young

Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

A comparative study was completed to determine the influence of various environmental stimuli on the transcription of three different fimbrial operons in Escherichia coli and to determine the role of the histone-like protein H-NS in this environmental regulation. The fimbrial operons studied included the pap operon, which encodes pyelonephritis-associated pili (P pili), the daa operon, which encodes F1845 fimbriae, and the fan operon, which encodes K99 fimbriae. Using lacZYA transcriptional fusions within each of the fimbrial operons, we tested temperature, osmolarity, carbon source, rich medium, oxygen levels, pH, amino acids, solid medium, and iron concentration for their effects on fimbrial …

Faculty Publications

The relationship between eosinophils and the development of Ag-induced pulmonary pathologies, including airway hyper-responsiveness, was investigated using mice deficient for the secondary granule component, major basic protein-1 (mMBP-1). The loss of mMBP-1 had no effect on OVA-induced airway histopathologies or inflammatory cell recruitment. Lung function measurements of knockout mice demonstrated a generalized hyporeactivity to methacholine-induced airflow changes (relative to wild type); however, this baseline phenotype was observable only with methacholine; no relative airflow changes were observed in response to another nonspecific stimulus (serotonin). Moreover, OVA sensitization/aerosol challenge of wild-type and mMBP-1(-/-) mice resulted in identical dose-response changes to either methacholine …

Infrared Switching Electrochromic Devices Based On Tungsten Oxide, E. B. Franke, C. L. Trimble, J. S. Hale, Mathias Schubert, John A. Woollam Nov 2000

Infrared Switching Electrochromic Devices Based On Tungsten Oxide, E. B. Franke, C. L. Trimble, J. S. Hale, Mathias Schubert, John A. Woollam

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications

Different types of electrochromic devices for thermal emittance modulation were developed in the spectral region from mid- to far-infrared (2–40 μm). In all devices polycrystalline and amorphous tungsten oxide have been used as electrochromic and ion storage layer, respectively. Two types of all-solid-state devices were designed, one with a metal grid for the top and bottom electrode deposited on a highly emissive glass substrate, and another with a top metal grid electrode and a highly reflecting bottom metal electrode layer. Tantalum oxide is used as an ion conductor in both device types. The third device type consists of a polymeric …
